30 subjects were selected in the experiment and visual feature parameters were collected by eye tracker. Based on screening of effective data, the pupil diameter, fixation, and saccade were compared. The significance of statistics has been analyzed in statistics and data mining methods to find the differences of visual features between novice and veteran drivers on rural road. The result shows novice drivers’ pupil diameter changes dramatically on rural road, while the veteran drivers’ pupil diameter changes very slowly. The novice drivers show the fixation features of a long period, while the veteran drivers show the characteristics of short time fixation. The average fixation time of the veteran driver on the left turn curve is longer than that of the right turn curve. The saccade speed and amplitude of the veteran drivers are larger than the novice drivers.

The effects of screen luminance, contrast and saturation of HDR video presented on QLED display on visual system were investigated. Results showed that contrast and saturation, rather than luminance, influenced visual neural systems controlling eye movements, and affected subjective display quality and viewing preference.

Influence of parafoveal processing on the missing-letter effect

In all experiments, impeding parafoveal processing decreased omission rates for function but not for content words. In the last experiment, direct monitoring of eye movements revealed that, for both fixated and skipped words, letters in function words are missed more often than content words. These results are best interpreted within a model including the structural precedence hypothesis and stressing the importance of visual factors.

Transfer of induced PRL among visual tasks.

[Show full abstract] transferred to other visual tasks such as reading and object following. Ten normally sighted subjects with an already developed PRL participated in the experiment. Five subjects had a self-chosen PRL location and were used as control subjects. The other five subjects had an induced PRL location. The already developed PRL location was used as baseline for comparison. Under simulation of central scotoma, subjects had to fulfill two new visual tasks. The first task was to follow a group of moving dots presented on the screen and report changes in color. The second task was to read a text and subsequently answer related questions. Results showed that the differences between the baseline PRL position and the PRL position for the object moving task were comparable. Additionally, the reading task results showed that 3 out of 5 subjects with an induced PRL selected the induced PRL for reading.

Changes in the subjective fatigue and pupil diameters induced by watching LED TVs

To assess the changes in subjective fatigue and pupil diameters while watching two different videos in different viewing conditions such as the screen luminosity and the display forms. The subjective fatigue of each subject was measured by a questionnaire conducted before and after watching the videos. The relative effects of the viewing conditions on the pupil diameters showed significant correlations in both screen luminosity and display forms (p < 0.05). The levels of subjective fatigue increased after watching the videos, compared to those before watching them, and the young subjects significantly felt more tired (p < 0.05). Changes in the subjective fatigue and pupil diameters during watching videos on LED TVs were different according to the display forms, the screen luminosity and videos. However, the pupil diameters decreased with a pattern of regression in the linear and third-order polynomial expressions in process of viewing time. The present study suggests a further study with a detailed analysis is needed to prove these findings.

Multiple image arrangement for subjective quality assessment

[Show full abstract] Traditional single/double stimulus based approaches are being replaced by multiple image tests, where several distorted versions of the original one are displayed and rated at once. And this naturally brings upon the question of how to arrange those multiple images on screen during the test. In this paper, we answer this question by performing subjective viewing test with eye tracker for different types arrangements. Our research indicates that isometric arrangement imposes less duress on participants and has more uniform distribution of eye fixations and movements and therefore is expected to generate more reliable subjective ratings.

Several types of eye trackers are available, ranging from scleral coils, EOG, to video-based corneal reflection eye trackers. While each has its benefits and drawbacks (e.g., accuracy vs. sampling rate), for graphical or interactive applications the video-based corneal reflection tracker is arguably the most practical device. These devices work by capturing video images of the eye (illuminated by ... [Show full abstract] an infra-red light source), processing the video frames (at video frame rates) and outputting the eye’s x- and y-coordinates relative to the screen being viewed. The x- and y-coordinates are typically either stored by the eye tracker itself, or can be sent to the graphics host via serial cable. The advantage of the video-based eye tracker over other devices is that it is relatively noninvasive, fairly accurate (to about 1° visual angle over a 30° viewing range), and, for the most part, not difficult to integrate with the graphics system. The video-based tracker’s chief limitation is its sampling frequency, typically limited by the video frame rate, 60Hz. Hence, one can usually expect to receive eye movement samples at least every 16ms (typically a greater latency should be expected since the eye tracker needs time to process each video frame, and the graphics host needs time to update its display).

The visual component to saccadic compression

Visual objects presented around the time of saccadic eye movements are strongly mislocalized towards the saccadic target, a phenomenon known as "saccadic compression." Presenting a saccadic target sometime before saccade initiation was sufficient to induce mislocalization. When we systematically varied the onset of the saccade target, we found that it had to be presented around 100 ms before saccade execution to cause strong mislocalization: saccadic targets presented after this time caused progressively less mislocalization. When subjects made a saccade to screen center with a reference object placed at various positions, mislocalization was focused towards the position of the reference object. The results suggest that saccadic compression is a signature of a mechanism attempting to match objects seen before the saccade with those seen after.
