Political Economy of Morocco: Is the EU Anchor for Neo-Liberal Restructuring

Authors:

Abstract

The chapter analyses the transformation process of Morocco from a state-led economic model into a neo-liberal one within the time frame starting from 1956 (country’s independence) until today. Accordingly, it explores the restructuring of political and economic set up, institutions, actors and their changing role in the country. With a focus on whether the EU is an anchor for this neo-liberal restructuring, the chapter investigates if the transformation process has weakened or helped to reconstitute the powers of the state, induced development in the country, and encouraged a real socio-economic change among the Moroccan society.
