USING PROJECT WORK TO FOSTER LEARNER AUTONOMY AT A PEDAGOGICAL UNIVERSITY, VIETNAM: A CASE STUDY

The ultimate goal of language teaching is to nurture independent learners equipped with learning autonomy. One of the most efficient methods adopted to foster learner autonomy is through cooperative learning or project work [20]. The current study, which was carried out at a Vietnamese university, investigates the extent to which learner autonomy is fostered via the use of project work in an EFL classroom. The findings of the study revealed that project work had brought students various opportunities to engage in the whole process of conducting the project including selecting and shaping their learning contents, building up their intrinsic motivation and boosting the self-regulation. These factors could eventually allow them to become more autonomous learners. As a result, learners' English proficiency is enhanced. The findings of the study also offer some pedagogical implications for researchers, practitioners and teachers at the Vietnamese tertiary context, who wish to employ project work in order to encourage learner autonomy in their classrooms. The study also meets the requirements of innovation of higher education policies in terms of reforming teaching methods and curriculum in Vietnam.

This research aims at examining the extent to which first-year students in a Bachelor in English Language Programme in Vietnam are ready for autonomy learning. With the quantitative approach and the adapted Nguyen and Habok’s Learner Autonomy Perception Questionnaire by Nguyen and Habok (2021), 180 freshmen in the programme were asked to make their choice against a range of statements related to beliefs about teacher’s and learner’s roles, students’ motivation and desire in studying foreign language. After that, one-sample T-test was run and the result showed that the participants demonstrated quite a good level of readiness to be autonomous learners. Among the four investigated aspects, students’ beliefs of teachers’ roles can be said to potentially create restrictions to their initiative-taking in their learning. The participants appeared to have sufficient knowledge of their selves as language learners, which plays an essential role in fostering their self-study ability.

The present study aimed to design and validate a questionnaire to investigate students' perceptions of learner autonomy in the context of Vietnamese tertiary education. The questionnaire was adapted from various well-established scales in the literature, and then the back-translation method was used to produce a version in Vietnamese. After the questionnaire development process, 1,565 non-English majors at seven different tertiary institutions in Vietnam voluntarily participated in the study and completed the questionnaire. Evidence of reliability and validity was provided for the instrument using SPSS Version 24, SmartPLS 3, and SPSS AMOS. Reliability was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha, composite reliability (CR), rho_A value, and average inter-item correlations. Validity was substantiated using Messick's framework of validity (1995). This entailed five different aspects: content, substantive, structural, external, and consequential. The results indicated that reliability reached adequate values and the aspects of validity were mostly confirmed. The questionnaire, therefore, was suited to exploring how students perceive learner autonomy, but it requires more validation for future use in the other contexts.

The present paper reports on some stages of an ongoing research project which investigates how Vietnamese non-English-major university students perceive learner autonomy (LA) and which factors, from their perspective, influence the promotion of LA. Data was collected using questionnaires administered to more than 1,500 university undergraduates from different higher education institutions in Hanoi, Vietnam, and 13 students participated in semi-structured interviews. The initial stage of the project, detailed here, was to validate the questionnaire on the basis of reliability and Messick’s (1995) framework of validity. The results revealed that reliability and most aspects of validity investigated in this research were adequately fulfilled, except for the relative goodness indices, which needed improvement. Currently, both quantitative data and qualitative data are being analyzed to reach conclusions. The research results are expected to help the research team to provide suggestions on how to foster LA in English tertiary education. Accordingly, those results will be of interest to language educators in Vietnam in particular, scholars who are researching LA, and those who are interested in the promotion of LA.

Vietnam has a population of approximately 87 million, consisting of 54 ethnic groups, among which the Kinh account for 87 per cent of the population, with the rest making up around 11 million people (13 per cent of the total population), who speak about 100 languages (Dinh 2010). Among the 11 million people, more than one million are of Chinese and Khmer descent (Kosonen 2004). Vietnamese, the language of the Kinh group, has been the common language among Vietnamese in the country, at least since 1945. Across all these communities it is estimated that over 100 languages are spoken (Lavoie 2011), although many of these languages did not have writing systems until recently. Ten ethnic languages are used by over one million speakers in each group; and it was regulated by national language policy that users of these languages are entitled to bilingual education. These groups include Tay, Nung, H’mong, Muong, Cham, Khmer and Jrai, among others (Bui 2003). These languages have been put to official use at cultural events as well as being used as media for broadcasts on television and radio news. The Vietnamese Constitution, of 1946 and 1992, stated that all minority groups have the right to maintain their mother tongues in their schooling as well as to use their languages to preserve their ethnic cultures and values.

This article presents the findings of an action research study on developing learner autonomy through project work in an English for Specific Purposes class. The study was conducted at a Colombian regional and public university with environmental engineering undergraduates. The instruments for data collection were field notes, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, students’ artifacts, and video recordings. The results revealed that learner autonomy could be developed by means of cooperative work in order to achieve common interests and support each other. Students also displayed self-regulation in regard to facing failures through learning strategies; furthermore, this study showed how intrinsic motivation implies the desire for accomplishment and knowledge to fulfill a learning goal.

Learner autonomy in foreign language teaching and learning has been a favourite topic for a long time. Since the beginning of the millennium year, there have been lots of studies to promote learner autonomy in different levels of foreign language education at different schools and at different universities. In recent years, many new approaches and innovations have been used to develop learner autonomy in foreign language education. Helping foreign language learners to become autonomous is one of the fundamental and the universal duties of all of the foreign language educators have. Learners who think that their learning styles and their efforts are necessary to develop the learning methods and approaches can be successful in learning new foreign languages. They can also give positive energy to their teachers or professors to develop their teaching methods and techniques. The concepts of ‘autonomy’ and ‘responsibility’ are two crucial requirements in learning and both of them require active practices. Responsibility and autonomy are not easy to distinguish. Responsibility and autonomy are not easy to distinguish. In this paper, their importance and their differences will be explained. The reasons of developing responsibility and autonomy will also be explained. New approaches on learner autonomy in foreign language learning and teaching will be highlighted. Language learning strategies will be handled. Sample classroom activities will be shared. Useful websites, blogs and books on learner autonomy will be suggested.

This study investigates the effects of strategy-based instruction (SBI) on the promotion of learner autonomy (LA). LA was conceptualized and operationally defined as learner self-initiation and learner self-regulation. An intervention study was conducted with the participation of 37 students in an experimental group, and 54 students in two control groups at a Vietnamese university. An eight-week metacognition training package was incorporated into the academic writing programme of the experimental group. Students in the experimental group improved their ability to plan, monitor and evaluate a writing task more than students in the two control groups. Planning became the most often exercised skill, followed by evaluating and monitoring. Improvements in writing were maintained on a delayed test. Overall, the study suggests that strategy-based instruction in the form of training learners in task-specific metacognitive self-regulation improved learners’ autonomy in both learning and their writing ability.

21st Century employers are looking for graduates who possess soft skills that include responsibility, self-confidence, social and communication skills, flexiblity, team-spiritedness, good work attitude, self-motivation and self-management. Many skills learned through project-based learning are highly sought by today's employers including the ability to work well with others, handle interpersonal conflicts, make thoughtful decisions, as well as practise and solve complex problems. A project based learning (PjBL) approach was undertaken through a project assigned in a Workplace Communication course, to incorporate these soft skills. The project work assigned required students to investigate a workplace problem in a real workplace setting. This present study was conducted to identify the relevant soft skills acquired when undergoing the project work. It also aims to find out how PjBL has equipped students with the related soft skills in the 21st century workplace environment. In view of this, it is evident that project-based learning facilitates the growth of learners in acquiring the aforementioned skills.

This questionnaire study examined the beliefs, practices and constraints related to learner autonomy reported by 359 teachers (mainly expatriate) working on an English Preparatory Year Programme (PYP) at a university in Saudi Arabia. The teachers associated learner autonomy primarily with notions of independence and control and saw it as the ability and motivation to complete tasks, individually and/or collaboratively, in and/or outside the classroom, and with no/little teacher involvement. They believed that promoting learner autonomy was a desirable goal and described how they tried to achieve this goal in their teaching. Most were, however, less positive about the feasibility of promoting learner autonomy and explained this in relation to curricular, societal and, above all, learner factors (such as lack of motivation and independence and low proficiency in English). In discussing these findings, several avenues for further research are identified and through which teachers’ conceptualizations of learner autonomy can be understood using mixed methods research and with reference to a range of socio-cultural, intercultural, professional, occupational and institutional forces.

This article reports on an action research project on ways and means of promoting learner autonomy in an ESL classroom. It focuses on the implementation of an autonomy-based English program with a group of first-year university students at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The context and objective of this autonomy-based program are presented, classroom procedures and group learning tasks are described, and suggestions are provided for teachers to adapt these procedures and tasks to suit the needs of their particular students.

Learner autonomy is widely recognised as a desirable goal in tertiary education as it is found to comply with learner-centred approaches and enable students to pursue life-long learning (Sinclair, 2000a; Ciekanski, 2007). In language teaching and learning literature, it has become the main interest of researchers and practitioners who believe that learner autonomy can enhance students’ chance for success in learning a language. A great amount of research has been done to investigate various ways to foster learner autonomy in language teaching around the world (e.g., Benson, 2001; Breeze, 2002; Chan, 2001; Cotterall, 1995; Dam, 1995; Jing, 2006; Lo, 2010; L.C.T. Nguyen and Gu, 2013). However, learner autonomy is still widely considered a ‘western’ concept and much of the research has either been conducted in a western context or based on the western view of learner autonomy (Pierson, 1996, Sinclair, 2000a; Chan, 2001). This research aimed to gain more understanding of the development of learner autonomy in English language learning among students at a private university in Hochiminh city, Vietnam. The study has revealed that the major perception of learner autonomy in this Vietnamese context relates to ‘taking the initiative’ in learning, especially in selfstudy. The type of learner autonomy, as understood and practised by students in the context of Vietnamese tertiary education, has been argued to have the characteristics of Littlewood’s (1999) reactive autonomy. This finding lends itself to the application of Sinclair’s (2000a) teacher-guided/learner-decided approach to promoting learner autonomy. In other words, an integrated learner training programme (ILTP), which gradually developed students’ capacity to take more control in the learning process by providing them with metacognitive strategies for learning management, raising their awareness of themselves as learners and of the learning context, and encouraging them to explore the English language and its learning strategies, was perceived to foster the students’ willingness and enhance their ability to take the initiative in learning and create a habit of engaging more in self-directed learning. This study has also identified certain obstacles to promoting learner autonomy in Vietnam. In particular, the exam-oriented educational context poses significant challenges to both teachers and students in their efforts to promote autonomous learning. These difficulties include time constraints and a stringent syllabus. In addition to the contextual constraints, the large power distance between teachers and students in Vietnamese culture was also suggested to be a factor in hindering learner autonomy because it results in teacher reliance and an authoritarian view of the roles of teachers in the language classroom. This cultural trait, combined with the contextual constraints, seems to discourage teachers from giving students more control in the classroom and, at the same time, inhibits students from taking such control.

Although learner-centeredness has been widely applied in instruction in the world, this approach has only been cautiously adopted in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching at some institutions in Vietnam. Taking a social constructivist view, this case study explores how a learner-centred perspective is employed in EFL teaching at a teacher training college in Vietnam. The study is based on data generated with EFL teachers and students of an advanced level class through classroom observations, in-depth interviews, group discussions and document reviews. The data have been qualitatively analysed to show how learner-centeredness is successfully employed to get the students actively involved in learning. Implications are drawn in regard to EFL teaching and learning, and also curriculum and materials development.
