Abstract

ABSTRAK: Adakalanya mahasiswa memiliki kesulitan dalam menemukan topik atau ide untuk karya tulis ilmiahnya. Pada tulisan ini dipaparkan beberapa cara untuk menemukan ide atau topik penelitian, dan trend penelitian pendidikan biologi yang dilakukan oleh ribuan peneliti di dunia. Trend penelitian tersebut ditinjau dari banyak aspek, antara lain: materi yang dikaji, topik yang diteliti, desain/metode penelitian yang digunakan peneliti, alat pengambil data yang dipakai, sampel yang diambil, dan analisis data yang digunakan. Pada tulisan ini juga diberikan sekilas sebagian metode penelitian yang bisa digunakan untuk melakukan penelitian dan contoh judulnya. PENDAHULUAN Seorang mahasiswa memiliki tugas akhir untuk menulis sebuah karya tulis ilmiah sebagai salah satu syarat untuk memperoleh gelar Sarjana (disebut skripsi), gelar Magister (disebut tesis), atau gelar Doktor (disebut disertasi). Sekalipun sejak awal sudah disadari bahwa mahasiswa akan melalui penyelesaian tahapan ini, namun seringkali masih menemui kebingungan atau kesulitan untuk mencari topik karya ilmiah yang akan disusunnya. Sebenarnya banyak cara untuk memperoleh topik atau ide karya ilmiah, namun titik awalnya adalah bahwa kita harus banyak membaca dan memiliki kepekaan terhadap apa yang terjadi di lingkungan kita. Saat ini bahan bacaan dapat diperoleh dengan sangat mudah melalui internet, tidak saja karya ilmiah dari dalam negeri tapi juga dari semua belahan dunia dapat kita genggam dalam sekejap mata. Ada banyak cara mendapatkan ide atau topik penelitian, di antaranya berikut ini. 1. Ikuti payung penelitian dosen, pilihlah yang sesuai dengan bidang minat. Dosen biasanya memiliki payung penelitian, yang dapat mewadahi atau diikuti sejumlah mahasiswa untuk tugas karya ilmiahnya. 2. Pelajari skripsi/tesis/disertasi yang ada di perpustakaan, baik perpustakaan di kampus maupun perpustakaan di dunia maya. Banyak perguruan tinggi yang mengunggah karya ilmiah mahasiswanya. Inspirasi dapat muncul setelah membaca karya ilmiah yang sudah ada. Namun perlu diingat, tidak diperbolehkan adanya plagiasi. 3. Inspirasi dari matakuliah yang diikuti. Adakalanya pada saat di kelas untuk mengikuti matakuliah tertentu, bisa diperoleh ide atau topik penelitian untuk ditindaklanjuti. Dosen kadang melontarkan masalah atau ide penelitian terkait dengan materi yang sedang dibahas. 4. Bacalah referensi atau artikel jurnal penelitian yang sesuai dengan bidang minat. Jangan dari jurnal dalam negeri saja, namun juga dari jurnal manca negara. Pelajari bagaimana mereka memaparkan latar belakang masalah, menyampaikan masalah yang dikaji, metode penelitian yang dilakukan, dan bagaimana membahas hasil penelitiannya. Dari referensi terdahulu, seringkali bisa memunculkan ide atau topik penelitian. Hasil penelitian karya ilmiah kelak dapat dipublikasikan dalam jurnal penelitian. 5. Ikut seminar yang relevan. Research that has been done by building engineering students as a thesis tends to choose a theme that has been widely researched before. This research aims to find out the trends of vocational education research in the field of engineering building including trends of theme research and trends of methodology research. This research used descriptive quantitative research methods with a library research approach. Data collection techniques using documentation. Data analysis techniques are used in content analysis. The results of this study show the trends that have occurred in vocational education research in the field of building engineering in 4 universities, then obtained the trend of vocational education research themes and research methodology trends: 1) The theme of vocational education research in the field of building engineering is in high demand is the theme of teaching and learning with a percentage score of 47%, 2) The research method in demand is Research and Development with a percentage score of 31%, 3) Interesting research subjects are learners with a percentage score of 58%, 4) The data collection technique in demand is a questionnaire with a percentage score of 36%, and 5) The data analysis technique of interest is descriptive statistical analysis with a percentage score of 67%.

Understanding the research trend in the elementary education level is essential for future research directions that could strongly contribute to the educational field. The purpose of this research was to analyze the research trend in elementary education level in Indonesia. Bibliometric and content analysis was applied to answer the research questions. The data source of this study was articles published by Indonesian Journal that accredited by the science and technology index (SINTA). In order to maintain the credibility of the data, we were selected the journal article only for those published in Journal with SINTA level 2 during the period of 2017 to 2019. The bibliometric analysis was conducted using the VOSviewer program. Moreover, the content analysis was conducted using unitizing-sampling-recording-reducing-inferring-and narrating. The finding of our study describes the research trend in Indonesia based on aspects: 1) researcher network; 2) topic; 3) method; 4) subject; 5) research location; 6) data collection; and 7) analyses. Therefore, as our recommendation, there is a need for elementary education researcher to conduct their study that drives to the research trend as we reported.

Microbiology learning has not used multimedia based on science technology engineering and mathematics (M-STEM) which can help students understand the concept of microbiology and empower 21st-century skills. The purpose of this research was to develop M-STEM in microbiology learning. The research method uses research and development (R&D) with the Borg and Gall development model which consists of seven stages. The research sample was 20 students who had participated in microbiology learning and four microbiology lecturers at the department of biology education, IKIP Budi Utomo. The research instrument used a questionnaire, interview transcripts, expert validation sheets, practitioner validation sheets, and readability test sheets. The research data is the percentage of the validation score from experts, practitioners, and readability tests. The research data analysis was carried out by descriptive qualitative. The results showed that M-STEM was declared strongly valid in the aspect of media (88.36%), material (97%), usefulness in microbiology learning (99.49%), and readability (88.82%). M-STEM contains interesting features, is easy to access and operate, and the information in it is easy to understand. Berdasarkan observasi awal, hasil belajar dan kreatifitas mahasiswa Jurusan IKK yang mengambil mata Kuliah Bakery masih rendah, diperkirakan rendahnya hasil belajar ini disebabkan oleh keterbatasan sumber belajar atau media pembelajaran yang ada, masih terdapatnya kekurangan pada media pembelajaran yang ada. Oleh karena itu, dirancang dan dibuatlah sebuah media pembelajaran berupa multimedia pembelajaran untuk mata Kuliah Bakery. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisi efektifitas media pembelajaran berbasis multimedia pada mata kuliah bakery. Pada penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan metode penelitian Research and Development (R&D), dan model pengembangan yang dilakukan pada penelitian ini adalah model 4D (four-D) yang dikembangkan oleh S.Thiagarajan dkk. Model 4D ini terdiri dari empat tahapan, yaitu define (tahap pendefinisian), design (tahap perancangan), develop (tahap pengembangan), dan dessiminate (tahap penyebaran). Media pembelajaran berbasis multimedia ini dibuat dengan menggunakan Macromedia Flash CS 6. Hasil yang diperoleh dari penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa media pembelajaran berbasis multimedia pada mata kuliah bakery ini efektif untuk dimanfaatkan sebagai sebuah media untuk pembelajaran bakery.

The current study intends to review both all empirical and theoretical research for understanding and discussing the trend in early childhood science education in Turkey. A summative content analysis was conducted with a total of 136 studies including 69 graduate theses (master thesis and dissertations) and 67 journal articles published from 1999 (the beginning) to the mid-2017. Data were extracted from the full-text of articles and the theses by visiting the websites of the journals and the related databases. The search keywords mainly included the terms: early childhood, preschool, science. The studies were analyzed in terms of publication year, author collaboration, research topics, research methods, and target population. The results revealed that the number of graduate theses and articles in the field of early childhood science is continuously growing. It was identified that collaborative research efforts in early childhood science education was a leading design on the published work. Results determined that a vast majority of the papers used quantitative research methods, mainly conducting surveys and using experimental design. Children, early childhood teachers and prospective teachers were the most common study subjects in the selected papers. The research topics of environmental education, scientific process skills, teaching methods, attitudes and behaviour were received relatively more attention among researchers.

To describe the characteristics and development of EE research in Korea, this paper includes critical reviews of previous studies which discussed the trends in EE research. The range of studies reviewed includes journal articles, doctoral dissertations, and masters’ theses on themes of EE from the 1980s to 2016. This paper introduces the backgrounds and contexts of EE in Korea, interpreting the development of this field and the roles of academic journals. This paper also shows the expansion and diversification of EE research in Korea. In the processes, groups of researchers have conducted their studies in the emerging areas with specific target groups or topics such as early childhood EE and climate change education. By comparing research articles in the early 2000s and the early 2010s, the author suggests that the range of practices in EE has changed. Reviewing the past and present features of EE research, this study leads to discussions on traditions/currents of EE and roles of EE research for the future practices.

This paper provides a descriptive content analysis of biology education research papers published in eight major academic journals indexed in Social Science Citation Index [SSCI] of Thomson Reuters® from 1997 to 2014. Total of 1376 biology education research [BER] papers were examined. The findings indicated that most of the papers were published in the JBE and IJSE, and frequently studied topics were environment and ecology, genetics and biotechnology, and animal form and function. The findings were also indicated that learning, teaching and attitudes was in the forefront as the frequently investigated subject matters, undergraduate and secondary school students were mostly preferred as sample group and sample size mostly varies between 31-100 and 101-300. In addition, it was found out that interactive qualitative research designs were mostly preferred. Besides, that single data collection tool was generally used and this data collection tool included questionnaires, interviews and documents. Finally, frequency/percentage tables, central tendency measures, statistical analysis such as T-Test and ANOVA/ANCOVA and content analysis were commonly used as data analysis.

This essay offers several insights regarding the principles of qualitative and quantitative methods, defining how they shape the empirical process as well as knowledge acquisition in social science research. A comprehensive discussion includes comparing the assumptions and techniques of each paradigm, as well as a description of their respective strengths and weaknesses in research. These paradigms are examined in terms of past trends in science education research, indicating that over the last several decades a shift in approach from the quantitative to qualitative has occurred. The central thesis of the essay contends that methodological decisions should be based in pragmatism, rather than a pre-existent set of philosophies or beliefs irrespective of context. Implications for research are discussed in terms of the findings of several science education content analysis studies, conveying that research methods often coincide with the collective interest of the masses, policy, educational reform or program developments. Key words: paradigm decisions, qualitative research, quantitative research, science education, trends.
