Abstract

Iraqi J. Agric. Res. (Special Issue) Vol.22No.4 2017929THE EFFECTS OF SUBSTITUTION BARLEY BY 10, 30% HYDROPONIC BARLEY IN DIET OF AWASSI MALE RAMS ON SEXUAL BEHAVOIUER AND REPRODUCTIVE PERFORMANCE M.J.Al-Saadi ABSTRACTThe objective of this study is to cultivated and produce sprouted barley under local conditions to investigate theincorporationeffects at a levels of 10% and 30% in diet of16 weaned lambsof Awassi male lambs, on reproductive traits and sexual behavior. The experimental plan was designed for 135 days period, started from 1/12/2016to 15/3/2017 using hydroponic steel chamber Barley grain were cleaned, washed, soaked and spread on the trays to implantation by hydroponic system and water irrigation, lambsis withanaverage body weight of 19.25±0.25 kg, was agedfour month andwas split into 3 groups 6 to each,All groups were daily feed with 2% of body weight at concentrate diet, the chemical analysis of sprouts were recorded, pen test of male rame were done to estimate the sexual behaviors and body weight at puberty were recorded. The chemical analysis revealed significantly higher value and improve nutritional alteration in sprouts comparative to grains. In blood serum sex hormones evaluation, both treated groups particularly 30% group recorded higher values compare to control. In pen test and sexual estimation treated groups particularly 30% group recorded high improvement with earlier and higher puberty weight than both 10% and control groups.According to these results it could be recommend to replacement of sprouted barley different level to the diet of ruminants and lambs for more improvements to reproductive traits The effects of substitution barley by 10%,30% hydroponic barley in diet of Awassi male rams on sexual behavior and reproductive performance. ... Partial and complete replacement of field-grown maize with hydroponic maize increased the red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC), and hemoglobin (Hb) concentration in Osmanabadi does (Jagtap et al. 2019). Substitution of barley by hydroponic barley at 30% level in the diet resulted in the early attainment of puberty with intense sexual behavior and a higher number of successful mating in Awassi rams (Al-Saadi 2017). Feeding of hydroponic barley replacing barley grain had a positive effect on feed intake, final body weight, total gain, average daily gain, and FCR on in Awassi lambs (Ata 2016). ...

Hydroponics is one of the widely adopted technologies for fodder production in arid and semi-arid regions. In addition to the benefits such as shorter growth period and minimal water and land use, it also produces nutritious fodder that contains essential nutrients required for the growth and reproduction of livestock. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of feeding hydroponic maize fodder on the reproductive performance of buck kids. Twenty-four Tellicherry buck kids aged around 3 months were randomly selected and allocated into three treatment groups, namely, control, treatment 1 (T1), and treatment 2 (T2). Experimental diets were formulated by replacing the concentrate with hydroponic maize fodder at 0% (control), 25% (T1), and 50% (T2) level. The buck kids supplemented with hydroponic maize fodder attained puberty earlier (T1, 246.50 ± 2.61 days; T2, 241.00 ± 2.06 days) (P < 0.05); had higher (P < 0.05) scrotal circumference, testicular volume, and fresh semen characteristics; and exhibited intense sexual behaviors than the non-supplemented kids. Furthermore, hydroponic maize fodder supplementation improved the digestibility of dry matter (DM) (P < 0.01), organic matter (OM) (P < 0.01), crude fiber (CF) (P < 0.05), ether extract (EE) (P < 0.01), and nitrogen-free extract (NFE) (P < 0.01) in the kids. In conclusion, hydroponic maize fodder feeding did not have any negative impact on the reproductive performance of kids. Furthermore, the hydroponic maize fodder supplementation enhanced the kids’ nutrient digestibility and reproductive performance.

Hydroponics maize fodder of 7 days growth was fed to 6 dairy cows divided into two equal groups (BW 442 kg; avg. milk yield 6.0 kg). Animals were offered 5 kg concentrate mixture and ad lib. jowar straw along with either 15 kg fresh hydroponics maize fodder (T-HF) or conventional napier bajra hybrid (NBH) green fodder (T-CF) for 68 days. The hydroponics maize fodder (HMF) had higher CP (13.30 vs 11.14, %), EE (3.27 vs 2.20, %), NFE (75.32 vs 53.54, %) and lower CF (6.37 vs 22.25, %), TA (1.75 vs 9.84, %) and AIA (0.57 vs 1.03, %) than NBH. HMF intake was low (0.59 kg DM/d) than NBH (1.19 kg DM/ d) by the cows. However, the DMI (2.05 and 2.17%) was similar in both the groups. Digestibility of CP (72.46 vs 68.86, %) and CF (59.21 vs 53.25, %) was higher (P<0.05) for cows fed HMF. The DCP content (9.65 vs 8.61, %) of the ration increased significantly (P<0.05) due to feeding of HMF; however, the increase (P>0.05) in the CP (13.29 vs 12.48, %) and TDN (68.52 vs 64, %) content was non-significant. There was 13.7% increase in the milk yield of T-HF (4.64, kg/d) than the T-CF group (4.08 kg/d). The feed conversion ratio of DM (2.12 vs 2.37), CP (0.29 vs 0.30) and TDN (1.45 vs 1.52) to produce a kg milk was better in the T-HF than the T-CF group. There was higher net profit of Rs. 12.67/- per cow/d on feeding HMF. It can be concluded that feeding of HMF to lactating cows increased the digestibility of nutrients and milk production leading to increase in net profit.

The aim of this experiment was to determine the age at puberty of both ram and ewe lambs of three genotypes: Awassi (A), Charollais x Awassi (CA), and Romanov x Awassi (RA) F1crosses. Twenty, six-month old lambs (10 from each sex) from each genotype were used. Ram and ewe lambs were kept in separate groups from the beginning until the end of the experiment. Birth weight and weaning weight were recorded for all animals. Body weights and body condition scores were recorded at monthly intervals between 6.5 and 12 months of age. Blood samples were collected weekly from ewe lambs and fortnightly from ram lambs to monitor progesterone and testosterone profiles, respectively. Semen character- istics and scrotal circumferences (SC) were evaluated fortnightly. Weight at puberty in ewe and ram lambs were not sig- nificantly different among the three genotypes and ranged around 35 kg and 42 kg, respectively. In ewe lambs, age at puberty was significantly higher (P< 0.01) in A (280±11.5 d) than in RA (232±11 d) and CA (255±11.5 d). Age at puber- ty of ram lambs was also significantly different (P < 0.01) among the three genotypes being higher in A (243±5 d) than in CA (223±5 d) and RA (226±5 d) ram lambs. Semen parameters improved with age in all genotypes. The RA ram lambs had greater semen concentration and lower abnormal spermatozoa than the other two genotypes (P< 0.05). Results of the present study indicate that crossing Awassi ewes with either Charollais or Romanov sires tends to improve reproduc- tive characteristics of the Fcrossbreds through advancing age at puberty in both ram and ewe lambs.

The serving activity of seven rams in one 20-minute pen mating test followed by two one-hour pen mating tests was recorded. The mating performance of each ram during a single-sire flock mating was subsequently monitored. Mean number of services in the two one-hour pen tests gave the best prediction of the number of ewes inseminated during flock mating (r = 0.88, P < 0.01). The number of services in the 20-minute test gave a poor prediction of the number of ewes inseminated (r = 0.30). The total number of services during the first 20-minutes of the two one-hour tests (2x20-minute tally), the number of services during the 20-minute test and the first 20 minutes of the first one-hour test (2 x 20-minute tally) and the number of services during the 20-minute test and the first 20 minutes of the two one-hour tests (3x20-minute tally) were only moderately correlated with number of ewes inseminated (r = 0.67, r = 0.47 and r = 0.64, respectively). These results explain why other workers, using combinations of 20-minute tests, have failed to demonstrate a relationship between pen mating tests and flock fertility. The results further show that a measure of the serving activity of rams in pens can be used to identify rams that are capable of mating large numbers of ewes, and that the development of a commercially applicable test is worthwhile.

Peer, D.J. and Leeson, S., 1985. Feeding value of hydroponically sprouted barley for poultry and pigs. Anim. Feed Sci. Technol., 13: 183-190. Barley was sprouted hydroponically for 1-7 days under controlled conditions. Met.ab- olizable energy (ME) concentration of dried barley sprouts was determined with mature White Leghorn cockerels. There was a significant linear decrease (P < 0.05) in ME of the sprouts with increased sprouting time. Digestibility of dry matter (DDM), protein (DP) and energy (DE) of raw 4-day sprouts was determined with pigs, as were the weight gain and feed efficiency of the animals. Day 4 sprouts were- significantly (P < 0.05) lower in DDM, DP and DE than ground barley, but were superior in these characteristics (P < 0.05) to whole barley. Young pigs (18 kg live weight) fed on 4-day sprouts gained significantly (P < 0.05) less weight than pigs fed on ground barley, although feed efficiency was the same for both barley types. Results from the above experiments suggest that digestibility decreases as sprouting time increases. It would appear that drying and grinding the sprouts improves their di- gestibility.

Cereals are important sources of protein for human nutrition but have low quality due to limitations in the amounts of essential amino acids, notably lysine. These deficiencies result from the low levels of these amino acids in the prolamin storage proteins and hence are exacerbated when high levels of nitrogen fertiliser are used to increase yield and total protein content.Genetic and genetic engineering strategies to increase both total protein content and the composition of essential amino acids have been employed. These include the exploitation of mutant high lysine genes and the use of transformation to either express additional proteins which are rich in lysine and/or methionine or to increase the free pools of these amino acids.
