Exploring Resilience: in the Face of Trauma

What exactly is that quality of resilience that carries people, organizations, and communities through traumatic times? As a construct, resilience is built on the underlying assumption that an individual or organization has undergone a situation of ‘significant adversity’ and has adapted positively, returning to or increasing in performance and psychological wellbeing (Riolli and Savicki Omega, 31(3): 227–233, 2003; Sutcliffe and Vogus 2003). Definitions of resilience range on a continuum from survival to adaptation to competence to healing to hardiness to robustness to wellness (Werner American Psychological Society 81–85, 1995; Masten and Coatsworth American Psychologist, 53(2): 205–220, 1998; Luthar et al. Child Development, 71(3): 573–575, 2000; Coutu Harvard Business Review, 80(5): 46–52, 2002; Maddi 2002). Resilience is an important quality for leaders who are committed to the health of organizations. Organizational health is negatively impacted by organizational trauma; parallel to individuals’ experiences, group and organizational cultures and dynamics are wounded by trauma. While leaders cannot always protect organizations from trauma, leaders can strengthen resilience, recognize when trauma occurs, address the trauma effectively, and protect the system from spiraling into traumatization (Vivian and Hormann O.D. Practitioner, 34(4): 52–57, 2002). This paper offers recommendations for addressing organizational trauma as well as strengthening resilience, individually and collectively. Stories are shared from several organizations, demonstrating the importance of leadership and resilience in the face of trauma.

Purpose Although the importance of high-performance work practices to foster individual-level outcomes is well documented, how team-level perception of HPWPs impacts team-level outcomes is not well researched, particularly in the hospitality sector. To fill this research gap, the role of team-level perception of HPWPs in fostering team engagement through team psychological capital is investigated. Design/methodology/approach A survey was conducted using a structured questionnaire. Findings The study findings suggest that in the presence of HPWPs, front-line service employees have high psychological resources and are more engaged in performing their organizational tasks. Originality/value The hotel management should benefit from high-performance work practices to enhance employees' attachment with their service organizations for exhibiting work engagement.

This study explores the relevance of the brief Child and Youth Resilience Measure (CYRM-12) for sexual and gender minority youth (SGMY) aged 14–23 (N = 4,810), compares their patterns of resilience with general youth populations, and explores distinctions between key subgroups of SGMY. SGMY reported significantly lower scores, indicating poorer outcomes, than non-SGMY in several CYRM-12 items, especially those addressing familial and community support. Older SGMY (aged 19–23) reported significantly higher CYRM-12 scores than younger SGMY (aged 14–18; t = 11.00, p < .001). Compared with their non-SGMY counterparts, SGMY reported significantly lower scores regarding supportive parental relationships, connection to offline community, and school belongingness yet reported higher scores regarding the importance of education. Three factors contributed to SGMY resilience: (1) peer and community belonging, (2) familial and cultural support, and (3) youth’s personal attributes and self-efficacy. The results of this study also suggest that measuring resilience in SGMY should incorporate online as well as offline sources. Recommendations to enhance the CYRM-12 to capture the experiences of SGMY for social work research and practice are provided.

Purpose Globalisation and a significant reliance on technology for business management are on the rise in the twenty-first century. Organisations are growing increasingly exposed to both external and internal issues, making business more difficult. Drawing upon the system theory and self determination theory , this study examines the underlying theoretical mechanism between complex behaviour that emerges as a result of interactions among employees and the orginasations. Design/methodology/approach Employees of the Malaysian Digital Economic Corporation Sdn. Bhd (MDEC) registered .'s organisations were chosen as samples for this study .A total of 171 employees from these companies completed a survey. The data were analysed using PLS-SEM to discover employees collective behaviour capacities positively influenced the organisational capacity of MSC status companies. Findings The findings of the present study have validated the empirical model, showing a significant relationship in between the proposed constructs. Employees are an important commodity for a company, not only in leadership but also in survival. There is a positive set of behavioural capitals which allow the company to develop as a key agent of national economic advancement. The internal social structure influences resilience as a capacity. Thus the theoretical insight explain how organisations develop their internal capabilities as a capacity for resilience in the emerging market context of Malaysian MSCs Originality/value The study is first of its kind which has tried to investigate an exhaustive direct relationship model in the MSC sector. The study has postulated that it is not just the organizational resilience content but the perceptions of employees toward enhancing organizational resilience. The solution is based on an organisation's collective behavioral capabilities and internal organisational processes that connects the employees towards enhancing organizational resilience .

Introduction It has been reported that adversarial growth during traumatic events potentially enhances coping with sequelae. The purpose of this work was to assess post-traumatic growth (PTG) amongst radiation medicine staff members at the individual level as well as changes in perceptions of departmental culture following the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials/Methods An anonymous post-traumatic growth inventory (PTGI) survey comprising 21 indicators was disseminated to all 213 members of our multi-center radiation department to measure perceptions of change in personal, interpersonal-relationship and philosophy of life factors using principal-factor analysis. Additionally eight department safety-culture indicators from the National Hospital Patient Safety Culture Survey developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) were included to assess changes in department safety-culture perceptions verses a pre-pandemic survey. The survey was repeated fifteen months later to assess longitudinal trends. Results With a 56.3% survey-response rate, PTGI factor analysis yielded Cronbach's alpha values exceeding 0.90 for the 3 aforementioned PTG factors. The average growth per indicator was 2.3 (out of 5.0) which fell between small and moderate. The values were 2.4 (personal), 2.1 (inter-personal) and 1.6 (philosophy) for the 3 factors. The total PTGI score (47.7±28.3 out of 105 points) was lower for masked, patient-facing, frontline workers members (41.8±28.4) compared with others (53.1±27.3, p-value 0.001). For the AHRQ survey there was an improvement of 15% in perceptions of department safety culture and 7 of the 8 indicators showed improvements compared with baseline. The follow-up survey demonstrated overall sustained findings albeit with a trend towards declining PTG scores for non-frontline workers notably in inter-personal relationships (47.4±27.0, p-value 0.05). Conclusions A fair-to-moderate degree of post-traumatic growth was observed in personal and inter-personal relationship factors while least growth was noted in spiritual and religious beliefs. Perceptions of department patient-safety culture improved substantially. Sustained improvements were thus perceived at the individual and department levels.

In this paper we answer the question of how evaluation should be by proposing a good evaluation of research practices. A good evaluation of research practices, intended as social practices à la MacIntyre, should take into account the stable motivations and the traits of the characters (i.e. the virtues ) of researchers. We also show that a good evaluation is also just , beyond the sense of fairness , as working on good research practices implies keep into account a broader sense of justice . After that, we propose the development of a knowledge base for the assessment of “good” evaluations of research practices to implement a questionnaire for the assessment of researchers’ virtues. Although the latter is a challenging task, the use of ontologies and taxonomic knowledge, and the reasoning algorithms that can draw inferences on the basis of such knowledge represents a way for testing the consistency of the information reported in the questionnaire and to analyse correctly and coherently how the data is gathered through it. Finally, we describe the potential application usefulness of our proposal for the reform of current research assessment systems.

The purpose of this chapter is to narrate and conceptualise the changing processes that occurred when an interdisciplinary team transitioned from face-to-face workshops to a shared digital platform space in a historical time of crisis. The chapter describes how an interdisciplinary partnership project overcame obstacles, such as the respective institutions using different communication systems, to explore possibilities for partnership research through using a common digital platform as a tool for collective writing and for experimenting with writing genres. Inspired by cultural-historical theorisations of collective resilience, we describe how team members reinforced each other to strengthen risk situations, overcome them and use them as sources to support joint development of practices and co-research. We call this collective resilient digital agility . According to a cultural-historical perspective, resilience can be understood as a higher psychological function resulting from collaborative processes (Wertsch JV. Vygotsky and the social formation of mind. Harvard University Press. https://doi.org/10.2307/j.ctv26071b0 , 1988). The results show that the pandemic and the shift to using a new artefact, a digital platform, changed what it was possible to do, strengthening resilience and ways of working together and opening up a co-creative writing genre.

Objective: The resilience portfolio model is a conceptual framework that provides a more holistic understanding of the protective factors, collectively considered polystrengths, that promote resilience among survivors of trauma. Polystrengths are the range of strengths individuals possess that allow them to cope with adversity. Guided by the resilience portfolio model and the construct of polystrengths, this study examined the association between economic resilience–related protective factors, polystrengths, and resources on economic self-sufficiency among survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV). Method: Data from this study came from a cross-sectional online survey administered via Qualtrics research service in July 2022. This study sample includes 330 survivors, who screened positive for IPV using the Extended—Hurts, Insult, Threaten, Scream screening tool. Survivors were asked about their sociodemographic characteristics, access to resources, experiences with adversities (i.e., IPV and material hardship), along with six economic resilience–related protective factors representing three resilience portfolio model domains—regulatory strengths, interpersonal strengths, and meaning making. Results: Polystrengths was uniquely associated with economic self-sufficiency after controlling for other factors. Specifically, three regulatory strengths—economic self-efficacy, coping, and financial knowledge—were significantly and positively related to economic self-sufficiency. Two resources—social capital and childhood financial socialization—were positively related to economic self-sufficiency as well. Conclusions: Findings provide empirical support for the benefit of polystrengths in the context of economic resilience for survivors of IPV. As such, strengths-based approaches, particularly those that promote regulatory strengths, may increase the effectiveness of economic empowerment interventions, such as financial literacy, for survivors.

Effective communication and resilience are integral components in an organization's structure, particularly during and after situations of trauma. Trauma includes both internal factors (i.e., layoffs, mergers, unexpected changes in management, lack of positive social support) and external factors (natural disasters, economic insecurity, social violence). An organization's level of resilience to these factors is determined by the event's type, timing, location, rate of recurrence, and duration. In addition, proactive planning impacts organizational resilience. This chapter will focus on the importance of resilience during times of trauma, how resilience relates to leadership, and mental health experiences by employees.

This chapter explores 21st century leadership practices found in the theories of complexity and adaptive leadership as a path to addressing uncertainty, volatility, and complexity in an increasingly interconnected global world. In this exploratory chapter, the authors discuss the notion of leaders versus leadership and argue that leadership is a process that people do and not a role. The authors also assert that complexity and adaptability are key in addressing trauma that results from change that occurs inside and outside the organization.

The thesis of this paper is that organizations, just as individuals, can suffer from trauma. The nature of an organization's work directly impacts the culture of the organization: organizations that provide services to traumatized individuals, families and/or communities are susceptible to becoming traumatized systems. The effects of trauma influence an organization's identity and worldview in the same way that an individual is influenced by her/his trauma experience. This article explores the phenomena of organizational trauma. It describes different types of trauma, e.g., direct and indirect, sudden and cumulative. Using examples from their practice as managers and consultants, the authors offer insights into how organizations might become traumatized systems and present characteristics of those traumatized systems. Recommendations are proposed for assisting traumatized organizations to recover and for intervening in a preventive way with organizations at risk for becoming traumatized. This framework of organizational trauma makes it easier to identify the systemic and inherited aspects of trauma, improve organizational functioning, and enhance resilience. Ultimately understanding organizational trauma and helping traumatized systems to heal offer hope for the future.

Since 1979, the development of the hardiness approach to enhancing performance and health has been facilitated by continual cross-fertilization between theorizing, research, and practice. At first, hardiness emerged from individual differences research on stress reactions as the attitudes of commitment, control, and challenge. Since then, extensive theorizing and practice, combined with considerable additional research, has led to the supplementation of hardy attitudes with hardy skills concerning coping, social interaction, and self-care. Also, the mechanisms whereby hardy attitudes and skills enhance performance and health are better understood. The hardiness approach has also expanded from the individual to the organizational level. All these developments form an example of the value of combining theorizing, research, and practice. © 2002 Educational Publishing Foundation and the Society of Consulting Psychology.

Resilience has merited growing interest in psychology and management research, given its potential to drive important organisational outcomes. Yet, there is limited understanding of the individual and contextual factors that promote resilient behaviours in organisations. This study explored relationships between dispositional variables (proactive personality and optimism), leadership styles (empowering and contingent reward leadership) and employee resilience. Data were collected from a sample of 269 while-collar workers in New Zealand through an online survey. Results show that empowering leadership, proactive personality and optimism were significantly related to resilient behaviours. Moreover, optimism interacted with contingent reward leadership to predict employee resilience. The findings underscore the importance of measuring employee resilience as a contextualised, behavioural capability, and the need to investigate its nomological network considering the interplay of organisational enablers and dispositional variables. © This material is

Britt, Shen, Sinclair, Grossman, and Klieger (2016) offer compelling arguments for the need to consider resilience trajectories and to identify the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and contextual factors accountable for unique trajectories. We welcome the call for more focused research efforts toward uncovering the role of resilience in organizations and concur with Britt et al. that there is a need for a clearer characterization of resilience among employees, the correlates of resilience, and the way that resilience can be facilitated. Our objective here is to build on the main thrust of Britt et al.’s focal article by outlining a novel perspective on employee resilience, which we believe will constitute an important contribution to the organizational resilience literature.
