The PRISMI proposal for a user-friendly Load-Flow tool for analysis of island grids

In order to facilitate the successful decarbonisation of geographical islands in the Mediterranean region, PRISMI proposes the use of a methodology toolkit which, among the other energy planning tools, includes a Load-Flow (LF) analysis tool. This tool is used in order to assess the impact of selected RES on the power grid of islands. The proposed tool is advantageous compared with other solutions because it combines features useful for the proposed methodology in a simple and straightforward way. Its minimal requirements in terms of input parameters and algorithmic implementation make the tool user-friendly to non-experts who require a quick assessment of the impact a RES scenario can have on a selected island grid. To this purpose, the proposed tool is in the form of a stand-alone executable application, and uses grid, generation, and consumption data as inputs from the previous steps of the methodology to calculate the grid voltages and currents. This calculation is done by using the Newton-Raphson solving method. The tool is equipped with a Graphical User's Interface (GUI) that allows the user to perform a number of actions such as selection of the grid to be analysed among preset or custom models, specification of the timeframes for the LF calculation, simplified drawing of the selected grid in order to check the correctness of the input data, and capability of modification of the operating voltage and capacity limits. Also, with its output the tool provides the user with information about the voltage and capacity limits violation as well as a graphical illustration of all the problematic and normal parts of the grid. In the specific work the basic features of the proposed tool are presented together with the implementation results for two selected reference power systems. These results are used to show the effectiveness in the use and calculation results of the proposed tool.

Sustainable development is suggested by environmentalists as the solution for confronting the intense environmental, social and economic problems that emerge globally in the last decades. This study presents the recent features and trends of the associated concepts, like the green economy, green entrepreneurship, green professions and labour-market, with a particular reference to European Union countries. In the course of transforming the current economic model towards a green direction, vocational education appears as a fundamental prerequisite that will prepare the future workforce of green economy. In this respect, a small-scale research is also presented, recording the relevant opinions of senior high-school students in Western Attica (Greece), being an area of acute environmental, social and economic problems.
Book
Power system modelling and scripting is a quite general and ambitious title. Of course, to embrace all existing aspects of power system modelling would lead to an encyclopedia and would be likely an impossible task. Thus, the book focuses on a subset of power system models based on the following assumptions: (i) devices are modelled as a set of nonlinear differential algebraic equations, (ii) all alternate-current devices are operating in three-phase balanced fundamental frequency, and (iii) the time frame of the dynamics of interest ranges from tenths to tens of seconds. These assumptions basically restrict the analysis to transient stability phenomena and generator controls. The modelling step is not self-sufficient. Mathematical models have to be translated into computer programming code in order to be analyzed, understood and experienced. It is an object of the book to provide a general framework for a power system analysis software tool and hints for filling up this framework with versatile programming code. This book is for all students and researchers that are looking for a quick reference on power system models or need some guidelines for starting the challenging adventure of writing their own code.
