In the Austrian project UseCO2 – Utilisation of CO2 from industry experts from research institutes, universities, iron and steel industry and energy sector developed novel concepts for CO2 utilisation. For the conversion of CO2 to value added products a large number of different thermochemical and biotechnological pathways exist. The project identified interesting value chains for the utilisation of CO2 from industry and evaluated pathways with regard to scalability, possible products, technology readiness, economics and potential international markets.

Photocatalytic H2 production from ethanol(aq) solutions: The effect of intermediate products

The production of H2 via the photocatalytic transformation of aqueous solutions of ethanol, over Pt/anatase was studied in a semi-batch reactor. High H2/COx ratios were obtained indicating that the photoreforming of ethanol only occurred in a small proportion of the ethanol. [Show full abstract] acetic acid and 2,3-butanediol, with acetaldehyde being the most abundant. The photoreaction of acetaldehyde(aq), acetic acid(aq) or 2,3-butanediol(aq) resulted in lower amounts of H2 compared with that of ethanol(aq). The main reaction pathway for the photocatalytic transformation of acetaldehyde(aq) is via the formation of acetic acid and H2. Then, CO2 and CH4 are formed from the decomposition of acetic acid(aq). The decrease in the H2 production rate during the photocatalytic reforming of ethanol solutions is related to the presence of the intermediate products formed in the liquid phase that are not removed from the reaction medium. Carboxylate species and metallic Pt were present on the surface of the post-reaction catalyst.

Evaluation of Dislocation Density in Cold-Worked Iron as Measured Via X-Ray Diffractometry

The yield stress of metals increases in proportion to the square root of dislocation density; this relationship is known as the Bailey-Hirsch relation. The increase in yield stress Δσ is expressed as a function of the shear modulus G, the Burgers vector of dislocation b, and dislocation density ρ using the equation: Δσ=αGb√ρ. Here, α denotes the dislocation strengthening coefficient. Research ... [Show full abstract] using transmission electron micrographs has revealed a linear relationship between √ρ and Δσ. Various values from 0.77 to 1.4 were reported for α in cold-worked iron, but the equation Δσ≒1.8×10⁻⁸√ρ (α=0.9) has been established as applying to a variety of situations. On the other hand, the micro-strain ε has been measured via the Williamson-Hall method for two kinds of cold-worked iron: 0.001%C steel and 0.0056%C steel, with grain sizes of 120 μm and 50 μm, respectively. Plastic strain was induced by cold rolling up to a thickness reduction of 90%. The work hardening behavior is significantly different between these two steels but it was found that Δσ can be calculated for both using the equation Δσ[GPa] = 220×ε. From these results, the conversion equation; ρ[m⁻²] ≒ 1.5×10²⁰ε² was introduced to relate ε and ρ. As a result, it was confirmed that the Bailey-Hirsch relation can be treated as a common standard for understanding of dislocation density, regardless of the measurement methods employed.

The study of the ignition of the fuel under dilution conditions is crucial for the satisfactory operation and performance of dilution fuel combustion processes. In present study, the ignition temperatures of CH 4 diluted with CO 2 were measured in a counterflow ignition facility for the mixtures of ... [Show full abstract] 9–25% of CH 4 in CO 2 and 30%, 35%, and 40% oxygen concentration in the O 2 /CO 2 atmospheres, respectively. The experimental results show that for a fixed fuel concentration, the higher the oxygen concentration, the lower the ignition temperature. The differences between ignition temperatures of CH 4 for various oxygen concentration cases decrease notably with the decrease of the CH 4 concentration, and are not obvious when the fuel is intensively diluted at 9%. A mechanism has been updated based on our previous research work and named as IDIM (Intensive dilution ignition mechanism). The performance of the USC Mech 2.0, Aramco Mech 2.0, FFCM-1 and IDIM has been evaluated. IDIM can predict well the ignition temperatures of three different oxygen concentrations, while FFCM-1 markedly over-predicts the experimental results for all the cases. The effects of the oxidation pathways of CH 3 , CH 3 →CH 3 O, CH 3 →CO, CH 3 →CH 2 O and CH 3 →CH 2 (S), on the ignition temperature have been analyzed in detailed. The pathway of CH 3 →CH 3 O→CH 2 O plays an important role on the ignition when the oxygen concentration is high in the oxidant and the fuel is intensely diluted. Weakening the path of CH 3 →CH 3 O→CH 2 O is the main reason for the over-prediction of FFCM-1. Moreover, the effect of the fuel dilution on the ignition temperature is stronger than that of the oxygen concentration at the fuel concentration of 9%, resulting in that the conversion ratios of CH 3 to CH 3 O, CH 2 O, CH 2 (S), and CO are almost same for 30% and 40% oxygen concentrations. Therefore, the ignition temperature is almost insensitive of the oxygen concentration within the range of our experiment.

Several Fe(II) complexes were prepared as catalysts for the synthesis of oxazolidinones from terminal epoxides, aryl amines, and carbon dioxide. [Show full abstract] epoxides were activated via a Fe-O σ-bond between the Fe atom of the Lewis acid and the oxygen atom of the epoxide. Simultaneously, a nucleophilic carbene activates CO2 to form a carbene−CO2 adduct. In addition, interactions between the Lewis acid and epoxides accelerate the reaction of epoxides with aryl amines. DBU plays a crucial role in the reaction between the β-amino alcohol and cyclic carbonate. Under mild reaction conditions, various epoxides and aryl amines were converted to the corresponding oxazolidinones with good yields in the presence of CO2.
