Introduction
Ayurveda is the world oldest medication system and is originated in India more than 3000
years ago. It is the purest and traditional health care system. Nootropic herbs and drugs are
used to enhance memory, cognition, mood, and other factors associated with mental
functioning [1]. Examples of herbs with nootropic activity include Ashwagandha (Convolvulus
arvensis / Withania somnifera), Shankhpushpi, Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) and gotu kola
(Centella asiatica) and Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) are some of the famous nootropic herbs.
Bacopa monnieri (BM), also referred to as, Herpestis monniera, water hyssop, locally known
as Brahmi or Jalanimba in India, has been used for centuries in the Ayurveda, a holistic
system of medicine originating from India. It is classified as a Medhyarasayana, a drug used to
improve memory and intellect (medhya) [1]. It was used traditionally as a brain tonic to
enhance memory development, learning, and concentration, and to provide relief to patients
with anxiety or epileptic disorders [2]. Brahmi name is derived from the word ‘Brahma-creator
of the universe in the Hindu pantheon [3].Because the brain is the Centre for creative activity,
any compound that improves the brain health is called Brahmi, which also means ‘bringing
knowledge of the supreme reality’. The herb has been mentioned in several ancient Ayurvedic
treatises including the ‘Charaka Samhita’ since sixth century AD, in which it is recommended
in formulations for the management of a range of mental conditions including anxiety, poor
cognition and lack of concentration, as a diuretic and as an energizer for the nervous system
and the heart. Plant of Brahmi has been extensively researched and it shows nootropic ability,
improve learning and respiratory function. It is found in wetlands throughout the Indian
subcontinent in damp and marshy or sandy areas near streams in tropical regions. The genus
Bacopa contains over 100 species of aquatic herbs scattered throughout the warmer areas of
the world. Apart from India, it is also found Nepal, Sri Lanka, China, Taiwan, Vietnam,
Florida and other southern states of the USA. The entire plant is used medicinally.
Plant Description and Morphology
Bacopa monnieri, a member of the Scrophulariaceae family, is a small, creeping herb with
numerous branches, small oblong leaves, and light purple flowers. In India and the tropics it
grows naturally in wet soil, shallow water, and marshes The herb can be found at elevations
from sea level to altitudes of 4,400 feet, and is easily cultivated if adequate water is available.
Flowers and fruit appear in summer and the entire plant is used medicinally [4]

Mode Of Action Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri)
Extracts of Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) have been extensively
investigated for their neuropharmacological effects. There are
some compounds such as Saponins and their bacosides
present in Brahmi, which are responsible to enhance the nerve
impulse transmission [7]. The bacosides aid in repair of
damaged neurons by enhancing kinase activity, neuronal
synthesis, and restoration of synaptic activity, and ultimately
nerve impulse transmission. In animals, Bacopa has a relaxant
effect on pulmonary arteries, aorta, trachea, and ileal and
bronchial tissue, possibly mediated by inhibition of calcium-
ion influx into cell membranes [4]. There are numerous clinical
trials and studies have been performed by various researchers
to check the nootropic effects of Bacopa monnieri.
Functional/ Therepeutic Properties of Brahmi (Bacopa
monnieri)
It is a well proven herb of many medicinal properties. All the
parts of the plant can be used as medicine. In Ayurveda,
Brahmi has been used to promote memory and intellect and
also used for treatment of neurological disorders and also as a
rejuvenator [5]. It has also an ability to improve cognitive
function. Brahmi has many medicinal properties such as
antispasmodic, anticholinesterase, neuroprotective,
antioxidant, Alzheimer’s disease, antidepressant,
bronchovasodilatory, antiulcerogenic, anti-inflammatory,
antibacterial, anticancer, cell stabilization, antileishmanial,
etc.
Dosage
Therapeutic doses of Bacopa are not associated with any
known side effects, and Bacopa has been used safely in
Ayurvedic medicine for several hundred years [8]. Traditional
daily doses of Bacopa are 5- 10 g of non-standardized
powder, 8-16 mL of infusion, and 30 mL daily of syrup
(Brahmi). Dosages of a 1:2 fluid extract are 5-12 mL per day
for adults and 2.5-6 mL per day for children ages 6- 12 [9].
For Bacopa extracts standardized to 20-percent bacosides A
and B the dosage is 200-400 mg daily in divided doses for
adults, and for children, 100-200 mg daily in divided doses to
achieve the medicinal/therapeutic properties of Brahmi.
Clinical Studies
There are numerous clinical trials and studies have been
performed by various researchers to check the nootropic
effects of Bacopa monnieri. Summary of results are enlisted
in the table given below.

Brahmi As A Functional Food Ingredient In Commercial
Food Products
Functional foods are promoting public health but require
strong scientific evidence [14]. It is applicable for use of
Brahmi or any other Ayurvedic herb too. Confusion also
exists about claims applied to foods and those applied to
dietary supplements. Claims must be communicated
effectively to the consumers so that there is less confusion
about the product [15]. Care must be taken so that consumer
can differentiate the claims of health and structure-function
scientific claims. In recent times, the use of herbal products
has increased tremendously in the western world as well as in
developed countries due to its tremendous health benefits.
Bacopa monnieri, a well-known nootropic, an outstandingly

Food Product Segments Study
In recent times, the use of herbal products has increased
tremendously in the western world as well as in developed
countries. Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), one of the
outstandingly important medicinal plants, widely used
therapeutically in the orient and becoming increasingly
popular ingredient in food products. There are numerous of

available in the market with Brahmi as an ingredient is
presented in below chart.

Fig 3: Sector wise Segregation of Products containing Brahmi as functional Food ingredient [16]
Conclusion
Brahmi is clinically proven for its functional and therapeutic
benefits. It has been added as a functional ingredient in vast
majority of commercial food products. The major problem
comes with the herbs during their incorporation in to food
products. Most of the times, the food product chemistry is so
different from the herbs composition, it becomes very
difficult to incorporate the dry herb extract in to food product
matrix. The other major challenge with the herbal medicines
like Brahmi is that they taste very bitter and gives a pungent
herbal aroma. Bitter taste of Brahmi is the main reason for the
rejection in various food products. But it is also keep in mind
that various food drinks such as coffee, beer, wine, etc., is
popular due to its bitterness.
Way Forward
Herbal plant is gaining interest now a day because of its
various health benefits. It is becoming popular and growing
very fast in the western world as well as in developed
countries. So, the food company has to establish this herbal
product under and a strong marketing required to change the
behaviour of consumers about this herb. Flavour plays an
important role in consumer satisfaction and influences further
consumption of foods. The herbal note & bitterness makes
flavour of the product unappealing to the consumers. A
commercial process is needed that removes bitter components
without adding anything which is not permitted, while still
maintaining the expected flavour and nutritional value of the
product. With the use of herbs like Brahmi as a functional
food ingredient will bring revolution in the functional food
market as it has immense potential to provide greater health
benefits to the consumers.

There are numerous therapeutic uses for medicinal plants in treating and managing numerous diseases. Traditional medicinal plantswere mostly needed in the current scenario. The world's warmer and wetlands regions are home to the medicinal herb Bacopa monnieri (L.).It has been utilized for ages in Ayurvedic systems. The Bacopa monnieri was one of the traditional medicinal plants. These are commonlycalled "Brahmi," and the Tamil vernacular name is "Neerbrahmmi." It is easy to cultivate and grow in all seasons. These peculiar activeingredients, also known as memory enhancement and phytoconstituents were enriched in this medicinal plant. The present study focused onanalyzing phytoconstituents and the antimicrobial activity of Bacopa monnieri leaves. The efficacy of phytoconstituents on the antimicrobialactivities concerning minimum inhibitory concentrations was performed with different polar and non-polar solvents of the respective plant. The phytoconstituents such as alkaloids, amino acids, coumarins, flavonoids, glycosides, phenols, phlobatannins, quinones, reducing sugars, saponins, steroids, tannins, and terpenoids were recorded, respectively. Antibacterial activity performed with following human clinicalbacteria like Clostridium butyricum, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pneumoniae, and the antifungal activity against humanclinical such as Aspergillus flavus, A.niger, Aspergillus sp., and Penicillium sp. were determined. Among the two solvent extractions, the aqueousextract showed a more significant result than the benzene extract. According to the MIC, the antimicrobial properties of B.monnieriwithdifferent extracts were analyzed. The very minimum concentration has shown better inhibitions against microbes. The present study exploredthe antimicrobial properties of human clinical pathogens. So, the B.monnieriaqueous extract of leaves was suggested for the treatment ofmicrobial infections.

Extracts of Bacopa monniera have been reported to exert cognitive enhancing effects in animals. However, the effects on human cognition are inconclusive. The current study examined the chronic effects of an extract of B. monniera (Keenmind) on cognitive function in healthy human subjects. The study was a double-blind placebo-controlled independent-group design in which subjects were randomly allocated to one of two treatment conditions, B. monniera (300 mg) or placebo. Neuropsychological testing was conducted pre-(baseline) and at 5 and 12 weeks post drug administration. B. monniera significantly improved speed of visual information processing measured by the IT task, learning rate and memory consolidation measured by the AVLT (P<0.05), and state anxiety (P<0.001) compared to placebo, with maximal effects evident after 12 weeks. These findings suggest that B. monniera may improve higher order cognitive processes that are critically dependent on the input of information from our environment such as learning and memory.

Bacopa monniera Linn. (Brahmi) has been used since times immemorial as nerve tonic for improvement of memory. The authentication of the traditional claims of brahmi was initiated by investigating the effect of an alcoholic extract of this plant on acquisition, consolidation and retention of three newly acquired behavioural responses in albino rats, viz., a foot-shock motivated brightness discrimination response, active conditioned avoidance response and Sidman continuous avoidance response. The facilitatory effect of the brahmi extract (40 mg/kg, p.o. x 3d) was manifest in all the three learning responses as it augmented both the cognitive function and mental retention capacity. The chemical constituent responsible for the facilitatory effect of brahmi on learning schedules was identified as a mixture of two saponins designated as bacosides A and B. The bacosides significantly improved the acquisition, consolidation and retention in the shock-motivated brightness discrimination response, active conditioned avoidance response and produced a dose-dependent facilitation of discretion between an aversive (LiCl) and palatable fluid (sucrose) in the conditioned taste aversion (CTA) response. Bacosides also attenuated the retrograde amnesia produced by immobilisation induced stress, ECS and scopolamine. They also enhanced protein kinase activity and produced an increase in protein in hippocampus. Bacosides were also found to be safe in regulatory pharmacological and toxicological studies and were well tolerated by normal healthy male human volunteers in single dose (20-300 mg) and multiple doses (100 and 200 mg) administered for 4 weeks in double blind placebo controlled and non-crossover regulatory Phase-I clinical trial.

Many epileptic patients suffer from cognitive impairments; both the underlying pathology and antiepileptic drug therapy can cause such deficits. Phenytoin, one of the widely used anticonvulsants, is known to adversely affect cognitive function. A reputed Indian nootropic plant Bacopa monniera (BM) was evaluated alone and in combination with phenytoin for its effect on (a) passive-avoidance (PA) task; (b) maximal electroshock seizures; and (c) locomotor activity in mice. Phenytoin (PHT, 25 mg/kg po×14 days) adversely affected cognitive function in the PA task. BM extract (40 mg/kg×7 days), given along with phenytoin in the second week of the two-week regimen, significantly reversed PHT-induced impairment. Both acquisition and retention of memory showed improvement without affecting its anticonvulsant activity. The observed cognitive effects of PHT and BM were found to be independent of motor stimulation. The results provide evidence for potential corrective effect of BM in cognitive deficit associated with PHT therapy.

It is important to control abnormal behaviour and hyperactivity, and improve cognition in mentally retarded children (MRC), which would help in their education, training and subsequent rehabilitation. Recently it has become known that amongst other side-effects, protracted use of anti-convulsant medication induces cognitive and behavioural dysfunction, which is a major problem in mentally retarded epileptics. In a placebo-controlled study, we confirmed the efficacy of a herbal preparation, BR-16A (Mentat) in controlling such behavioural and cognitive deficits in 40 mentally retarded children. The efficacy of this remedy was further evaluated in 19 MRCs with epilepsy. Twelve patients had generalised seizure, 4 with partial and 3 with mixed seizure pattern was continued. Inspite of the usual antiepileptic treatment, the frequency of seizures ranged from 1 to 7 attacks in periods from 1 week to 1 year. With active drug Br-16A, it was possible to note a reduction in seizure frequency. Patients with higher frequency responded better. There was no further increase in the dosage of antiepileptic drugs. There was significant control of other abnormal behaviour as shown by reduction in rating score on the Children's Behavioural Inventory test. BR-16A was effective in controlling abnormal behaviour, especially hyperactivity and incongruous behaviour in mentally retarded children with and without epilepsy.

Bacopa monniera (BM), a traditional Ayurvedic medicine, used for centuries as a memory enhancing, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, sedative and antiepileptic agent. The plant, plant extract and isolated bacosides (the major active principles) have been extensively investigated in several laboratories for their neuropharmacological effects and a number of reports are available confirming their nootropic action. In addition, researchers have evaluated the anti-inflammatory, cardiotonic and other pharmacological effects of BM preparations/extracts. Therefore, in view of the important activities performed by this plant, investigation must be continued in the recently observed actions described in this paper. Moreover, other clinical studies have to be encouraged, also to evidence any side effects and possible interactions between this herbal medicine and synthetic drugs.
