Attenuation of coda waves in the contact zone between the Dinarides and the Adriatic Microplate

The attenuation of coda waves is analysed for nine seismic stations in the area of convergent motion of the Adriatic microplate and the Dinarides. The frequency dependent coda quality factor of the form Qc = Q0 fn is estimated for up to seven central frequencies (1.5, 3, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24 Hz) and for 21 successive 30 s long time windows. Q0 was found to increase from 68–353 for short lapse ... [Show full abstract] times of 20–50 s, to 158–373 for lapse times of 90–100 s. Parameter n is observed to vary between 0.46 and 0.89, with a pronounced tendency to decrease with increasing Q0, and vice versa. Both Q0 and n seem to stabilize for lapse times larger than 50–80 s, indicating that a change in rock properties controlling coda attenuation occurs at depths of about 100–160 km. The spatial distribution of observed Q0 is well correlated with observed seismicity and inferred tectonic activity. In particular, we observe significant negative correlation of Q0 with the peak ground acceleration (PGA) estimate for the return period of 475 years. The degree of frequency dependence n, is the smallest for stations on the islands, where the crust is the thinnest. The largest n is observed over the thickest crust in the region, where the Moho lies at depths of over 55 km. At the same time, a number of core parties underwent a rapid pro-EU conversion, pragmatically responding to internal and external incentives in the context of dynamic electoral competition and strong EU presence, and aimed at maximising their chances of securing executive office. The semantics of diminutives in the Kajkavian Croatian literary language

The paper discusses the semantics of diminutives in the Kajkavian Croatian literary language, a polyfunctional standardized idiom used in the north-western part of Croatia from the 16th century until the 1830s. By investigating a corpus of 1103 nominal diminutives, the relationships between the base and the derived word are analyzed, as well as the meanings of the diminutives themselves. The ... [Show full abstract] analysis has confirmed that the category of diminutives, while primarily used to convey smallness, includes a very wide semantic spectrum. The findings are in line with previous investigations on diminutives by Jurafski (1996), who, on the basis of a corpus containing diminutives from 6o languages, stated that the semantics of diminutives are indeed focused around the prototypical meaning “little”, but that diminutives themselves, motivated by several possible cognitive mechanisms, form a radial category of a highly complex polysemantic structure. The analysis shows that there are several possible relationships between the semantics of the derived diminutives and the semantics of the bases. The meaning of a diminutive can be motivated by all the possible meanings of the base word, but far more often by only one of the lexical meanings, mostly by the primary lexicographic meaning. Furthermore, there are numerous cases in the Kajkavian Croatian literary language in which diminutives have developed meanings that are in no way related to the semantics of the base word, as well as diminutives that – mostly through the process of metaphorization – have developed terminological meanings. A semantic classification of diminutives is suggested, with three basic categories: objective diminutives, expressive diminutives, and terminological diminutives. Objective diminutives have the primary meaning of “small”, be it in a spatial or a temporal sense. Expressive diminutives have the meaning of “small”, but can convey further meanings as well, for example, affection or scorn. The meaning of such diminutives is often only comprehensible through context. Several terminological diminutives, which have developed non-diminutive semantics, are also presented.

The authors review literature on proposed environmental exposure agents, report the results of field sampling and analysis studies to evaluate potentials for exposure to proposed agents, and propose criteria for ... They used these criteria to evaluate the evidence for suggested hypotheses, concluding that several proposed agents can be eliminated or considered unlikely based on apparent inconsistencies between clinical or epidemiologic evidence related to BEN and toxicologic or exposure evidence related to the agents. Mycotoxins and aristolochic acid are the primary targets of current toxicologic investigations, and while the evidence on exposures for both is potentially consistent, it is insufficient.

Head and Neck Malignancies in Croatian Renal Transplant Recipients

Renal transplantation is associated with increased incidence of cancer. We reviewed a large series of renal transplant recipients to determine the incidence and outcome of patients with malignant changes located at the head and neck. [Show full abstract] localization and disease outcome were evaluated in patients who developed cancer. Twenty one patients (1.7%) developed 27 head and neck malignancies. The average time from transplantation to development of cancer was 56.8 months. The mean length of follow-up was 9.4+/-4.8 years. Eighteen malignancies were cutaneous in origin and 9 were noncutaneous. Of cutaneous malignancies, 88.9% were basal cell carcinoma; one patient had Merkell-cell carcinoma and one patient developed squamous cell carcinoma. Six cases of basocellular skin cancer were recorded in one fair-skin patient. Noncutaneous malignancies involved the oral cavity (2 cases of Kaposi's sarcoma and one pharyngeal cancer) and the thyroid gland in 3 patients each. Two patients had post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder occurring at the head and neck. One patient had brain tumor. Radical surgery, radiation, and/or chemotherapy were necessary in 33.3% of patients. Immunosuppression was reduced in all patients, and 12 patients were switched from the calcineurin-based immunosuppression to sirolimus. They all have stable graft function. None of the patients died from cancer. Immunosuppression was ceased in one patient with Kaposi's sarcoma who returned to dialysis and died 10 years later from heart failure. An increased incidence of cancer occurring in the head and neck was recorded. Careful skin examination and oral examination is mandatory for discovering cancer before dissemination. Sirolimus is safe alternative to calcineurin-based immunosuppression in patients who developed head and neck malignancies.
