The Effectiveness of Microlearning to Improve Students’ Learning Ability

Abstract and Figures

One of the most important requirements for successful learning experiences is learning activity on a regular basis. The problem with today’s learning system is that the learners often get stuck while using traditional learning systems because they can’t motivate them to fast learning and make a creative mind. Successful learning requires getting knowledge on regular bases and keeping it memorable as long as possible. The problem with traditional learning methods is that the learner's mind glued in its stateand it does not provide any motivation to them to get new knowledge and improve their skills. Microlearning provides a new teaching paradigm which can allow knowledge and information to divided into small chunks and deliver it to the learners. Microlearning can make the learning subjects easy to understand and memorable for a longer period. In this work, we tested microlearning teaching methods for ICT subject in the Primaryschool. We chose two groups from a Primaryschool in Sulaimani city. Then we teachthe class using microlearning methods in one of them and traditional methods in the other for six weeks. After testing both groups getting the results, Microlearning group showed around 18% better learning than traditional group. We can conclude that using microlearning techniques, the effectiveness,and efficiency of learning can be improved. Also, the knowledge can stay memorable for longer periods

There is growing empirical support for the benefits of developing psychological capital (PsyCap), and the effectiveness of PsyCap interventions (PCIs) in the workplace. However, to-date, PCI delivery modes have not been compared. The first study in this article compares a face-to-face to an online PCI. The second study compares an online PCI to a micro-learning PCI utilizing a mobile application. Results from 228 participants assessed three times (before, immediately after, and six weeks after PCI completion) support the effectiveness and comparability of the three delivery modes, but also highlight notable advantages for online and micro-learning.

The study investigated the academic performance and motivation in Physics of Grade 9 students in Central Mindanao University Laboratory High School. It sought to: determine the level of academic performance in the pre-test, post-test, and retention test; assess the level of students' motivation when exposed to MCLE in relation to intrinsic motivation and personal relevance, grade motivation, self-efficacy and assessment anxiety, and self-determination; ascertain any significant difference on the level of student's academic performance in terms of pretest and post-test, and pretest and retention test; to find out any significant difference on the student's motivation between pre-survey (before exposure to MCLE) and post-survey (after exposure to MCLE). The study used a sequential explanatory mixed-method research design. Results showed that students' academic performance in pretest is very low, however, as they were exposed to MCLE, post-test and retention test results yielded high. MCLE has potentially increased students' academic performance. Among the motivational factor, students' self-efficacy was improved and their assessment anxiety was reduced as exposed to MCLE. However, motivational factors such as intrinsic motivation and personal relevance, grade motivation, and self-determination weren't improved as exposed to MCLE, but the mean interpretation remained at "highly motivated". In the same way, the overall mean of students' motivation slightly declined after the intervention but was recognized at the level of high motivation. There is a significant difference in the pretest-posttest and pretest-retention test. MCLE significantly increased students' academic performance from pretest to posttest and pretest to retention test. There is a significant difference in the overall motivation before and after the intervention of MCLE. Qualitative results revealed that students find MCLE as a good strategy to provide ease in learning Physics, however, students identified some external factors such as household-related tasks and intermittent internet connection as major distractions in a cybergogy learning environment.

Understanding learners’ behavior is the key to the success of any learning process. The more we know about them, the more likely we can personalize learning experiences and provide successful feedback. This paper presents a feedback model implemented in a ubiquitous microlearning environment based on contextual and behavioral information and evaluation results. The model uses SECA rules where the Scenario (S) represents the ubiquitous context variables reflecting the learner behavior during the learning process. The Event (E) identifies the probability that a learner fails or passes its evaluation. Condition (C) evaluates the results of the events. Moreover, Action (A) provides feedback to the learner. The proposal is developed through a controlled experiment whereby a microlearning environment can collect data from a ubiquitous context. The feedback model applies an analytics process to find the best context and behavior variables through different classification models. Those models predict whether a learner could fail, determine evaluation results’ causes, and provide feedback. The Random Forest was the model with the best performance. Thus, 94% accuracy, a 97% Recall, a 93% Precision, an F1 score of 95%, and a Jaccard of 91%. Hence, each scenario is defined from a branch of every tree obtained from the Random Forest model personalizing feedback actions applying clustering techniques. Finally, we presented an exemplified set of feedback rules, providing automatic recommendations and improving learner experiences. Thus, the experiment allows analyzing the learner behavior in a ubiquitous microlearning context from a feedback perspective.

Constant technological advancements and booming ed-tech industry have resulted into phenomenal ‘disruptions’ in the educational sector worldwide. Technology Enabled Learning (TEL) has been of immense importance in transforming the creation and dissemination of online education, and Open and Distance Learning (ODL) is not an exception. Several ‘user friendly’ learning opportunities are available due to massive prioritization on TEL. TEL has become an undisputed measure to intensify and diversify ODL initiatives across the globe. This research paper aims to review the prime TEL innovations those have metamorphosed or will augment the experience and outcomes of ODL; thus manifesting to be a quality and sustainable solution during turbulence, especially in the context of ongoing COVID-19 pandemic crisis and highlights the major ODL initiatives of the Government of India wherein TEL is playing a vital role in enhancing and promoting quality and sustainability of the same. The research paper also intends to emphasize in brief, the TEL at Goa University under its Directorate of Digital Learning and Initiatives (DDLI) and attempts to proffer practical suggestions to various stakeholders for creating sustainable realms that will enhance quality of ODL in India. Online training is expected to increase retention of information and be less time-consuming. This leads to a motivation to identify a more effective content delivery for online training. Microlearning indicates that bite-sized content is delivered in short fragments that can fit into anyone’s hectic schedule. However, the perspective of microlearning and its content design is still indefinite. It is challenging to design content for training that optimizes microlearning’s characteristics. The purpose of this research is to identify the perspective towards microlearning and the significance of the design of micro-sized content for online training for employees. This study investigated two questions which are how to design an effective micro-sized content for enhancing employees learning opportunities and the type of topics which are relevant to learning. The study was carried out with employees from education industries and training service providers. Data was collected through a survey and focus group interview. The study recognised that employees are primarily familiar only with video-based microlearning content and they have inadequate knowledge on the application of other microlearning elements for content design. One of the most common microlearning elements – Video, that is between 5-7 minutes in length, is considered to be the most applicable element in microlearning. In conclusion, the perspectives concerning the challenges in designing microlearning content were discussed. The study also proposed 2 different architectures with different objectives for the overall microlearning content design based on the employee’s experiences and perspective.

Many ongoing discussions in design thinking show similarities to the current entrepreneurship education debate on integrating both disciplines in the con-text of higher education. In that case, some articles, mainly from the devel-oped countries, have addressed this issue, though fragmentedly. In contrast, this integration-educational type is rarely found in developing countries, par-ticularly Indonesia. Additionally, very few studies have broadened the dis-cussion to include the teaching entrepreneurship-design thinking process cy-cle and the conceptual threshold to support the integrated teaching process. This paper uses the narrative literature review and in-depth qualitative case-study discussion as the methodology. It aims to establish a conceptual link and threshold between these two areas and provide conceptual strategies for integrating and teaching them in Indonesian higher education. In doing so, this paper has essentially reviewed and reconciled both parts of the entrepre-neurship education and design thinking discourse. The details and signifi-cance of the conceptual threshold have also been reviewed. The finding of this study is the five-main entrepreneurship-design thinking process cycle (i.e., understanding the problem comprehensively, generating ideas, experi-menting iteratively, testing the solutions, and implementing solutions). The process strongly incorporates the "empathy-reflect-visualize" cycle and the integrated conceptual threshold as a teaching support tool. This conceptual study provides new pathways for enriching current teaching and research practices of entrepreneurship education and design thinking.

This chapter aims at explaining the mechanisms of persuasion for effective communication in online educational environments. It starts by bringing awareness on the particularities of online educational environments and the psychological prerequisites of online studying. It tackles issues of digital skills as well as emotional intelligence abilities for online teaching, specific mindset and digital readiness, result expectations and assessment. Moreover, principles of microlearning and hybrid learning are explained as major approaches in online education. It then addresses issues related to technology-mediated communication with young ages vs. adults. It makes a brief analysis of mediated communication vs. direct communication in terms of adopted strategies according to age, adaptation of message, and feedback according to the online channel of factors affecting communication in online environments vs. face-to-face communication. Particular attention will be given to digital stress.

Teachers play a significant role in integrating technology in schools, and motivated teachers reflect higher levels of technology use in their classroom. Learning students, especially in basic schools, become a new direction of research. The problem is some education systems for improving teaching process less use technology in the classes. In this paper, we present role of technology in the classroom for a learning process. We proposed two classes one of them enriched with technology another one without technology, after teaching the same subject for both students we take a test. The result shows that Average of students GPA in classroom technology is 83.3%, but in the classroom without technology decrease to 60.4%, the result of shows the learning increased 22.9% by using technology. Besides all students enjoyed in classroom technology and most of them learned more material with technology. The result of our paper shows that the classroom technology is more efficient to learn basic school students.

The computer game industry has flourished to become the world's largest entertainment, one of the problem students playing with electronic games for long time without thinking about negative affections especially on their GPA. In this paper to present impact of computer games on creativity and academic achievement of basic school students, we proposed a questionnaires form for 100 students at basic schools. The result of our research explained that the students playing between 1-3 hours per day with electronic games their GPA not decreased or very few which is-0.22% per hour, in same time students that playing more than 3 hours per day their GPA decreased more which is-2.41% per hour. The result help the students to play with electronic games carefully, because if they playing for few hour not return negative affection and sometimes helped them to opining their mind and study, but if playing for more than three hours most time return negative affection for their GPA.

The aim of this study is to determine students’ views about infographics prepared for anatomy lesson. A case study, which is one of the qualitative research method, was used as a model. The participants were the registered students for the anatomy course of the Physical Education and Sports Department (PES) at Near East University. During a six weeks educational period, the study was applied with the participation of 140 students. As a preparation, students have been informed about infographics before the study. Then, the infographics about digestive anatomy was presented to the students under the anatomy course curriculum. At the end of the course presentation, a semi-structured interview form was delivered in order to get students’ opinions about infographic and “infographical anatomy” during the course. More than half of the students (n = 74) in the study stated that they did not know the meaning of the word “infographic”, and also much more students (n = 84) stated that they had never seen infographics prior to this study. In the end of the study, the students think that more effective visuals are used by infographics instead of traditional course visuals. They also think that the subject of infographics in general is more understandable and more satisfactory. Moreover, since infographics are easier to remain in the minds, they are much more effective. This study has revealed the presentation by infographics can be used in many other courses. By this research, it can be claimed that infographics are not only more effective but also more permanent in the minds. This teaching method can transmit information to the increasingly widespread use, and thus, the conventional form of lectures might be possible to transform towards easy understandable courses having much more infographics.

Summary In this paper we map the changing but ultimately convergent meanings of the term "microlearning" as they have emerged and developed over the last few years. We explore how the term works to organize and order a set of pedagogical and technological phenomena and concepts in new and interesting ways. Beginning with varying definitions of the term, we present a brief review of the research and informal literatures that have quickly developed around it. We advocate speaking of microlearning in terms of special moments or episodes of learning while dealing with specific tasks or content, and engaging in small but conscious steps. Based on this overview, we develop the thesis that the "microlearning agenda" - as an explicit emphasis on the minute and particular in teaching, learning and technology - presents valuable lessons for research into technology and media in education generally. We reveal microlearning to be not simply as one approach among many, but instead as a perspective that applies to many aspects of education, as something that goes on continuously, whether it is an explicit focus for research and technology development or not. As such, we show that the lessons gained through microlearning have a generalized applicability to the studies of media and technology in education in the broadest possible sense. We conclude by considering some lessons to be drawn from recent discussions of microlearning. These focus on the constraints and freedoms for learners and also on the pedagogical responsibility of teachers. The yet inconclusive and polyvocal nature of microlearning discourse is a good thing, and we believe it should be cultivated and encouraged.

One of the most important requirements for successful learning experiences is learning activity on a regular basis. Learners often get stuck while using today's e-learning systems, because they can't motivate themselves to use these systems for learning. In contrast the same learners make use of their computers, their cell phones and similar tools without such effort. The Research Studio eLearning Environments has developed a patent pending method for technology enhanced learning which aims directly at these motivational factors. Basically our approach supports repetitive learning through embedding the learning process into the daily routine by making use of communication devices. Through this method a new learning space emerges and becomes available for life long learning.

Mobile technologies hold great potential to make studying both more effective and more enjoyable. In this work we present a mobile, microlearning application. Our system is designed with two goals: be flexible enough to support learning in any subject and encourage frequent short study sessions in a variety of contexts. We discuss the use of our application to assess the feasibility of microlearning for non-language learning and the relationship between the physical location of study sessions and information retention.

Flashcard systems typically help students learn facts (e.g., definitions, names, and dates), relying on intense initial memoriztion with subsequent tests delayed up to days later. This approach does not exploit the short, sparse, and mobile opportunities for microlearning throughout the day, nor does it support learners who need the motivation that comes from successful study sessions. In contrast, our MemReflex system of adaptive flashcards gives fast-feedback by retesting new items in quick succession, dynamically scheduling future tests according to a model of the learner's memory.
