Criteria for evaluating synchronous learning management systems: Arguments from the distance languag...

As Virtual Learning Environments (VLE) supported by synchronous technologies such as Synchronous Learning Management Systems (SLMSs) are still new to distance language professionals, criteria guiding the evaluation of the appropriate SLMSs for Distance Language Education (DLE) are urgently needed. The first section identifies the need to develop criteria for evaluating an appropriate SLMS for DLE by reviewing what has been achieved in the research into Computer Mediated Communications (CMC) and SLMSs. The second section examines established principles of second language (L2) learning and the nature of distance language education in order to establish a theoretical framework for the formulation of such criteria. In section three, we propose five major criteria for evaluating an effective SLMS for DLE. We further discuss and argue for each criterion from the perspectives of both an e-instructor and an e-learner, and drawing on the empirical data from our distance language classroom. The final section acknowledges the limitations of the study and concludes that the proposal of these criteria is timely and that these criteria need to be enriched with the pedagogical and technological developments in DLE.

Implementation of such strict statements resulted in a lot of small or larger difficulties if we had used an elemen-tary HTML editor. Using a special web course oriented ed-itors can absolutely solve this problem. The second problem is construction of the web-based e-learning application that can administrate such web courses and takes into considera-tion AICC regulations. Development of such web applications is founded on the latest web technologies. This article intro-duces one approach to the modeling of the two most impor-tant components (web-based course, web-based application) of the web-based e-learning environment, convenient for Mil-itary Academy in Brno and Czech army. The article outlines the structure of web subject, e-learning environment and their implementation 1 . The LMS's structure and its functionality, based on a snaps algebra, belong to important results of the article. A BDI-based intelligent tutoring module for the e-learning platform INES

[Show full abstract] communicate with students in natural language; iii) BDI-based (Believes, Desires, Intentions) agents, which shape the tutoring module of the system; iv) an inference engine; and v) ontologies, to semantically model the users, their activities, and the learning contents. At the present paper we will address the intelligent tutoring module, and more specifically, its BDI-based agents. Briefly, the tasks of these agents are to recognize each student (checking his/her system credentials) and to obtain information about his/her learning progress. So, it can be able to suggest to each one specific tasks to achieve his/her particular learning objectives. The student himself/herself will decide if he/she accepts these tasks or ask for other ones. These new requested tasks can be delivered or not by the intelligent tutoring module, taking into account its decisions, which are based in several parameters related to the existing learning paths and the student's profile.
