An Overview of Web Usage Mining in Web Based Applications

Web Usage Mining is the application of data mining methods to the analysis of recordings of Web usage, most often in the form of Web server logs. The goal of web usage mining is to find the user’s access patterns quickly, such as the frequent traversal paths, frequent access page-set, and user clustering. Web usage mining mines the data generated by the web users visiting recorders while the interaction with the web. The mining processes include data preparation, mining process, and process analysis. This paper presents research issues, technique and application areas of web usage mining.

Applications that make use of such detection include credit card fraud detection and network intrusion detection. Most of the available outlier detection techniques rely in a distance measure to compare the objects in the dataset which imposed the restriction of dealing with numeric data. In this paper a new multivariate similarity-based conformity measure (MSCM) is suggested to be used to detect outliers in datasets that contain attributes of different data types. The MSCM satisfies two other desirable features; being a multivariate measure and giving ranking instead of a binary judgment of the object. The measure has been applied on three different datasets in order to be evaluated; the measure has shown good results in these experiments.

Magnetic shielding and shunting in industrial devices is crucial for keeping stray losses and hot-spot appearances as low as possible. Nevertheless, the additional costs for magnetic shunts and conductive shields have to be taken into account. The relevant objectives are merged into a single number by applying a fuzzy membership function to each objective, respectively. These membership functions can be implemented as static ones or in a way, that they adjust themselves dynamically during the optimization process. In general multi-objective problems show a number of local solutions besides the global one and it is worth to investigate as many of the local solutions as possible as well. Therefore, a most desirable behaviour would be if the optimization strategy behaves globally and yields additional information about local minima detected on the way to the global solution. This goal can be achieved by clustering the population prior to the recombination process and by performing the recombination in a cluster sensitive way.
