Abstract

This paper presents the activities performed by the P2Endure project that aims to provide scalable, adaptable and ready-to-implement prefabricated Plug-and-Play (PnP) systems for deep renovation of building envelopes and technical systems. These innovative solutions are applicable to transform non-functioning or sub-optimal public and historic buildings into dwellings and are applicable for the widest range of building typologies, i.e. public buildings, residential buildings, and transformation projects. The main innovation of P2Endure comprises PnP prefab systems enabled by 3D printing, innovative sensing technologies such as laser scanning, thermal scanning and the Comfort Eye, also integrated with BIM. P2Endure presents a proof-of-performance of the optimised PnP renovation techniques by implementing 10 large-scale and live demonstration projects that represent the main deep renovation typologies and real market demand in 4 EU geo-clusters. This will be done through progressive steps known as “4M: Mapping-Modelling-Making-Monitoring”. The innovative process, tools and solutions are presented together with the initial application to two real demonstration cases: the prefabricated PnP façade designed for the renovation of a nursery in Warsaw (PL) and the design of a PnP HVAC system for residential buildings to be applied in Breda (NL). The design concepts and predicted performance are included to assess the impact of the proposed solutions.

A low-cost infrared measurement system has been developed to monitor in real time thermal comfort conditions in indoor environments. The device employs a scanning linear array of thermopiles installed on the ceiling of the room and is assessed and controlled by an embedded microcontroller to measure indoor surface temperatures. This feature allows the evaluation of the mean radiant temperature (Tr), in compliance with ISO 7726, for several positions inside the space. Together with Tr, the variables required by ISO 7730 are measured to calculate the predicted mean vote (PMV). The PMV and Tr are provided as real-time outputs of the device through a wireless or wired connection, also as distribution maps. The paper reports a detailed description of the system, its calibration and uncertainty analysis. The capability of predicting thermal comfort conditions for multiple positions in the room has been tested and validated in a real case study with respect to a reference measurement system (microclimate station). Comparison showed a deviation of ±0.5 °C for Tr and ±0.1 for PMV without direct solar radiation and an average deviation of ±2.0 °C for Tr and ±0.2 for PMV with direct solar radiation.

This paper describes an innovative method for teaching consultation skills to graduate students as part of their academic coursework. Students were assigned to write a term paper based on a class topic in a community mental health or supervision and consultation course. Each student served as a consultant to two students and as a consultee of two other students. The instructor provided criteria for structuring and evaluating the assignment. Over 90 percent of the students evaluated the assignment as an excellent or very good learning experience that was useful in aquiring consultation skills. The instructor's experiences over a six-year period are presented. Lack of knowledge on the use of peer consultation and evaluation makes this an important area for further investigation.
