Abstract

Microscopic traffic simulation Safe, cheap and effective to evaluate Intelligent Transportation Systems. • Model calibration is the key to obtain meaningful results (GEH < 5). • Floating vehicle data (e.g. Smartphone) supplement traditional data from fixed detectors. • Optimization techniques support the modeller to tune and calibrate the model parameters. Modelling process • Model iVMS road network • Implement road junctions (signalized intersections, roundabouts etc.) • Define traffic demand • Determine origin destination matrix from traffic counts using Genetic Algorithm. • Define control plans for traffic lights • Calibrate Model (Driver behavior) * Average journey time (Siemens-Stratos) * Vehicle speed profiles (smartphone) iVMS network simulation • Developed a reliable microscopic traffic simulation model (GEH 1.43) • A tool to investigate what-if scenarios Opportunities for research • Intelligent and connected traffic signals • Advance driver assistant systems in urban environment • Traffic congestion and environment • Fuel consumption & emission modelling Opportunities for traffic management • Traffic management strategies e.g. SCOOT MOVA • Identify critical links and junctions on the road network • Roads, junctions, bus stop improvement schemes • Investigate public transport policies • Impact of parking • Incidents management and recovery
