Abstract

When I started my academic career in the early 1960s there were no institutional resources on offer that could help me come to terms with what was expected, nor was there much in the way of informal advice from those senior to me. I just got on with it, only very occasionally actively seeking advice on what to do (and how) and what not to do. Things were slightly different at my next post—an annual review interview with the department head, which focused on promotion prospects; eight years later (the year I left) there was a one‐day workshop on teaching methods. I moved again, this time to a senior (potential leadership) appointment, and again there was nothing. A decade later that university was one of the first to introduce a formal staff development program. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
