The Impact Of The Special Economic Zones On The Health And
Environmental Conditions Of The Population: A Field Study On Duqm
In The Sultanate Of Oman
The study investigates the impact of the establishment of the economic zone in the state of
Duqm on the health and environmental conditions of its population. The study employs the
methodology of a comprehensive survey of all heads of households in the state of Duqm,
the area is divided into (23) villages. The study based on a quantitative descriptive method,
and it uses questionnaire as a tool to collect data. The study found a range of results, most
notably: that there is a high percentage of the study sample (73.8%) confirmed that the
changes in the economic zone of Duqm has negatively affected the health and
environmental conditions of its population. The results also show that more than two-thirds
of respondents confirmed that the economic projects in Duqm have caused pollution in the
region. The study also confirmed that the presence of a low level of health conditions of
the population and this is evidenced from high child mortality rates and high abortion rates
among women in the Duqm.
