Abstract

Street basketball has a close affinity with urban culture. In response to social exclusion, racism, and the economic crisis, urban culture establishes an aesthetic movement of resistance. Since the late 1970s, urban culture has become confused with the hip-hop movement, which reached Brazil in the early 1980s as a movement for the expression of marginalized segments. In this scenario, street basketball developed and spread. Its roots, however, are more remote.
