Hyperspectral Imaging for Landmine Detection

Authors:

Abstract and Figures

This PhD thesis aims at investigating the possibility to detect landmines using hyperspectral imaging. Using this technology, we are able to acquire at each pixel of the image spectral data in hundreds of wavelengths. So, at each pixel we obtain a reflectance spectrum that is used as fingerprint to identify the materials in each pixel, and mainly in our project help us to detect the presence of landmines. This technology has advantages over the actually used techniques: • It is safer because it limits the need of humans in the searching process and gives the opportunity to the demining team to detect the mines while they are in a safe region. • It is faster. A larger area could be cleared in a single day by comparison with demining techniques • This technique can be used to detect at the same time objects other than mines such oil or minerals.

... In particular, AP landmines cause long-term casualties and psychological effects by mutilating, rather than killing. More than 1,000 deminers have lost their lives or suffered injuries while performing demining operations between 1999 and 2012 [2]. All around the world, there are approximately 100 million buried landmines [3] due to the low-cost manufacturing [4] and simplicity of deployment across wide regions. ...
... 10.413 people in Colombia, one of the nations most affected by landmines worldwide, lost their lives to landmines between 1990 and 2013 [8]. Over 35,000 amputees in Cambodia have been impacted by a landmine explosion [2]. The average number of people killed or maimed annually is 26,000 [9] and 80% of this figure is children [5]. ...
... Such systems tend to give an audio warning when a detection is made, and it is not recorded or geostamped. Detecting new landmines is more difficult because they contain fewer or no metals [2]. Stated differently, there are numerous varieties of landmines composed of diverse materials, including plastic, glass, wood, and metal, and they come in a range of sizes [21], most of which are undetectable by conventional electromagnetic-induction (EMI) methods used in metal detectors. ...

Detecting and clearing legacy landmines, Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), and Unexploded Ordnances (UXO) using a force made up of humans or animals is extremely risky, labour- and time-intensive. It is crucial to quickly map millions of buried landmines/IDE/UXO, and remove them at a reasonable cost to minimise potential risks and make this labour-intensive task easier. Using unmanned vehicles and robots outfitted with various remote sensing modalities appears to be the ideal way to carry out this task in a non-invasive manner while employing a geophysical investigative method. In this study, a small-scale customised drone – the so-called Maggy – was developed to simplify and automate the procedures of cleaning explosive devices. It was instrumented with innovative intelligent automated techniques and magnetometer sensor technologies. Maggy’s performance was assessed in field tests conducted in Latvia and the United Kingdom. The outcomes, obtained in the open-air minefields and the benchmark assessments, verify the viability of the technologies, methods, and approaches integrated into Maggy for the efficient and economical detection of legacy landmines and IDE/UXO. This research provides the related research community with fundamental design and implementation parameters (e.g. flight speed, flight altitude) in building and using magnetometer-integrated Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). The improved versions of the developed easy-to-use compact technology are aimed to be deployed by humanitarian demining teams to expedite their clearing operations safely and efficiently.

This paper presents methods for the modeling and simulation of explosive target placement in terrain spectral images (i.e., real hyperspectral 90-channel VNIR data), considering unexploded ordnances, landmines, and improvised explosive devices. The models used for landmine detection operate at sub-pixel levels. The presented research uses very fine spatial resolutions, 0.945 × 0.945 mm for targets and 1.868 × 1.868 cm for the scene, where the number of target pixels ranges from 52 to 116. While previous research has used the mean spectral value of the target, it is omitted in this paper. The model considers the probability of detection and its confidence intervals, which are derived and used in the analysis of the considered explosive targets. The detection results are better when decreased target endmembers are used to match the scene resolution, rather than using endmembers at the full resolution of the target. Unmanned aerial vehicles, as carriers of snapshot hyperspectral cameras, enable flexible target resolution selection and good area coverage.

Due to the incredible growth of high dimensional datasets, we address the problem of unsupervised methods sensitive to undergoing different variations, such as noise degradation, and to preserving rare information. Therefore, researchers nowadays are forced to develop techniques to meet the needed requirements. In this work, we introduce a dimensionality reduction method that focuses on the multiobjectives of multiple images taken from multiple frequency bands, which form a hyperspectral image. The multicriteria classification algorithm technique compares and classifies these images based on multiple similarity criteria, which allows the selection of particular images from the whole set of images. The selected images are the ones chosen to represent the original set of data while respecting certain quality thresholds. Knowing that the number of images in a hyperspectral image signifies its dimension, choosing a smaller number of images to represent the data leads to dimensionality reduction. Also, results of tests of the developed algorithm on multiple hyperspectral image samples are shown. A comparative study later on will show the advantages of this technique compared to other common methods used in the field of dimensionality reduction. © 2017 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).

This paper is intended to provide an introduction to the issue of landmine contamination, crisis, legacy, and action. We conduct an analysis of mine action national and international programs. Before proposing the use of new technologies, it is important to review the background of the mine action sector since its first inception. These notes set out an introduction to the problems of landmines, and explain how mine action programs are organised. A brief summary of the campaign to ban antipersonnel mines is also included.

Hyperspectral imaging is a trending technique in remote sensing that finds its application in many different areas, such as agriculture, mapping, target detection, food quality monitoring, etc. This technique gives the ability to remotely identify the composition of each pixel of the image. Therefore, it is a natural candidate for the purpose of landmine detection, thanks to its inherent safety and fast response time. In this paper, we will present the results of several studies that employed hyperspectral imaging for the purpose of landmine detection, discussing the different signal processing techniques used in this framework for hyperspectral image processing and target detection. Our purpose is to highlight the progresses attained in the detection of landmines using hyperspectral imaging and to identify possible perspectives for future work, in order to achieve a better detection in real-time operation mode.
