Abstract

A comparative study is made of the effectiveness of manganese, zirconium, and titanium additives in removing impurities present in a magnesium melt. In analysis of the experimental data attests to the possibility of removing iron, silicon, and aluminum from a magnesium melt by introducing no more than 0. 1% zirconium or 0. 37% titanium into the melt. The results on the removal of impurities from magnesium with the aid of manganese indicate the possibility of removing iron, silicon, nickel, and aluminum from the melt by introducing a large quantity of manganese (no less than 0. 9%) into the melt.
