La Ponte-Ecomuséu. A link between innovation and community involvement

Abstract and Figures

The ecomuseum of Santo Adriano arises as a pragmatic response to the needs and desires of a group of young and active people living in a depopulated and depressed rural area in Asturias. This structure enalbes to create a museological project where different social actors (either public or private) converge because they share similar interests. The object of our initiative is to create a participatory framework for heritage and museum management, with democratic relations among community members.

2016 Milan Cooperation Charter “Ecomuseums and cultural landscape”
(*) Odalice Miranda Priosti, founder and Coordinator of the Ecomuseu Comunitário de Santa
Cruz (Rio de Janeiro), passed away on Christmas Day, 2017.
She was a contributor to the debates of the Forum of Ecomuseums and Community Museums, in
Milan during the 24th ICOM General Conference. Her text is reproduced in this book.
We want to pay her a well-deserved tribute, for her pioneering role in the promotion and experimenta-
tion of ecomuseology in the last thirty years, not only in Brazil, but also internationally. She has
visited ecomuseums and colleagues in Europe and America and she has organized, with great vi-
sion and wisdom, two international encounters of ecomuseums and community museums, in her
own Ecomuseum, in 2000 and 2004.
We can say that she has thus paved the way to the success of the Milan Forum.

 


La Ponte began to work along these lines between 2011 and 2013, setting up an initial legal infrastructure (adopting the charity formula) and economic infrastructure (self-managed), which allowed the generation of the first work contracts and the initiation of new lines of work in three main areas: the management of local heritage, its conservation and research. This orientation of the ecomuseum towards the social, while being built from scientific experience, led to its description as a social enterprise based on knowledge [58,59], thus calling for transfer processes from the University not strictly based on technology or company profit, but on the humanities and cooperation with the territories, as tools of social innovation [60]. ...

The aim of this paper is to approach the concept of agrarian archaeology, an epistemological framework that allows the investigation of agrarian landscapes favouring new historical narratives far from traditional paradigms and, at the same time, the proposal of innovative forms of cultural heritage management in rural areas. The working methodology and some examples of both empirical work (archaeology) and research-action approaches to cultural heritage are presented. As a result, agrarian archaeology opens up a perspective of experimental research, which permits the problematization of conceptual languages, questions historical narratives and causes the rethinking of personal practices, in addition to promoting an open science close to citizens. Cultural heritage here is to be understood as a social process of meaningful construction, a space of debate and transformation for social innovation.

What happens when you are asked to run a learning programme for young people on a community archaeology project, at the very last minute and with minimal resources? This paper is an overview and critical review of the programme that we and some of our students coordinated for a group of local children in the village of Villanueva de Santo Adriano, Asturias, Spain. It describes the planning and delivery of the five-day programme of activities, some of them standard fare for archaeological education and others improvised or designed for this specific site and excavation project. The paper looks at the feedback and aftermath of the project, including a shocking episode of vandalism, and reflects on the lessons and outcomes of the project.
