The significance of self citation is not appreciated very much in research. Self citations though used for genuine reasons are mostly misunderstood as a way to increase citation count and thereby the popularity of the author. By including self-citation a certain problematic effect called PIED-PIPER effect can be eliminated. PIED-PIPER effect can be explained by considering a situation where in a low cited but an important paper of a researcher doesn’t acquire the proper recognition due to blind elimination of self-citations can affect the researcher.
