Bats hibernating in Cerambyx cerdo cavities

We are collecting data of the use of cavities created by the longhorn beetles Cerambyx cerdo as bat hibernation sites in Poland. During research conducted in 2017-2018 in SW Poland bats hibernating in C. cerdo cavities were noted in 53% of the monitored trees. Now we are continuing research. Distribution patterns, species richness and status of bats in Poland

This review provides the fi rst up-to-date information on distribution and status of bats in Poland since 1983. The members of southern and northern European bat fauna occur in the country. 24 species (20 breeding) recorded so far can be divided into four groups with respect to their patterns of distribution. [Show full abstract] and widespread in all or almost all regions [5]: Eptesicus serotinus, Nyctalus noctula, Plecotus auritus, Myotis nattereri, and M. daubentonii, and (b) species reported from almost all parts of Poland but patchily distributed – more abundant in some parts of the country while rare or vagrant in another [10]: Myotis mystacinus, M. brandtii, M. dasycneme, Vespertilio murinus, Eptesicus nilssonii, Pi pis t rel lus pipistrellus, P. pygmaeus, P. na thu sii, Nyctalus leisleri and Barbastella barbastellus. (2) Spe ci es reaching their north-eastern range of dis tri bu ti on in the Polish lowlands [3]: Myotis myotis, M. bechsteinii and Plecotus austriacus. (3) Species confi ned to the Carpathians, Sudetes and Kraków-Częstochowa Upland [3]: Rhinolophus hipposideros, Myotis emarginatus and Rhinolophus fer ru me qui num (except of the Sudetes). (4) Species of unknown status, most likely vagrants [3]: Nyctalus lasiopterus, Myotis blythii and Pipistrellus kuhlii. Species rich ne ss gradient, with the number of species increasing from north to south, refl ects the climatic and to po gra phic diversifi cation of Poland. The highest number of species [19–21] is reported from Kraków-Częs to cho wa Upland, the Car pa thians and Sudetes (south Poland), while the lowest [13–14] in the NE corner. M. emarginatus, M. dasycneme and R. hipposideros – classifi ed as endangered, and M. bechsteinii – as near thre a te ned, are the rarest of Polish breeding species. In contrast to the situation in Western Europe, M. myotis and B. barbastellus are relatively abundant and not regarded as threatened.

In June 2010 and 2012 two nursery roosts of whiskered bat Myotis mystacinus were found in central Poland (Południowowielkopolska Lowland). Both female colonies occupied crevices under the sills of roof gutter of house. New records enriched knowledge about shelters of breeding colonies of the whiskered bat in Poland.

Concentrations of at least 600 hunting noctule bats Nyctalus noctula were observed over the artificial shallow reservoir Siemianówka in eastern Poland. The observation indicates that noctule bats concentrate hunting during the presence of vast amounts of insects over the reservoir. The data about bat mortality at wind farms were collected from the years 2007-2011 in five regions of Poland. The cases of mortality were confirmed for 7 bat species: Vespertilio murinus, Eptesicus nilssonii, Eptesicus serotinus, Pipistrellus pipistrellus, Pipistrellus pygmaeus, Pipistrellus nathusii and Nyctalus noctula. 5 species were recorded in Pobrzeże Gdańskie (Gdańsk Coast) region, 3 ... The winter bat assemblages of Złote Mountains (Sudeten Mts., SW Poland) were investigated in the years 1996-2005. In total 16 underground objects were checked and hibernating bats were observed in 13 of them. The number of animals in particular sites varied from 1 to 38 individuals. Single hibernating males of Myotis alcathoe were recorded in caves and mining adits at four localities in the Beskid Wyspowy Mts, Western Bieszczady Mts, Western Sudety Mts and Roztocze Upland.
