Introduction
Chinese people have been interested in crickets since Tang Dynasty (A.D. 618-907). The women in palace reared
crickets for their songs (Yin & Liu 1995). After that, this custom spread to common people. Crickets have been
reared not only for songs, but also for fighting. Jia Si-Dao (A.D. 1213-1275) and Liu Tong (A.D. 1593-1636) wrote
monographs on cricket selection, rearing and fighting (Yin & Liu 1995).
Taxonomic studies of Chinese cricket species have been reported since the 19
th
century. Walker (1869) first
described new species: Oecanthus sinensis, Plebeiogryllus spurcatus and Velarifictorus (Velarifictorus) aspersus
from Hong Kong and Macau. Subsequently, Shiraki (1911; 1930), Chopard (1936a, b; 1939), Bey-Bienko (1956)
and Gorochov (1985) also described species from China.
Xu Yin-Qi (=Hsu Y.-C.) is the first Chinese modern researcher to focus on crickets. He described 16 genera
and 34 species in 1928, and 18 genera 47 species in 1931 (Hsu 1928;1931). Hu Jing-Fu (=Wu C.-F.) reported 22
genera, 56 species from China (Wu 1935). Then taxonomic research paused until 1980s. Wu Fu-Zhen (=Woo F.-
C.), Wang Yin, Zheng Yan-Fen from Institute of Plant Protection, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences,
Beijing (Wang & Woo 1992; Wang et al. 1999; Wu & Wang 1992; Wu & Zheng 1992; Zheng & Woo 1992), Xia
Kai-Ling (=Hsia K.-L.), Liu Xian-Wei, Yin Hai-Sheng from Shanghai Entomological Museum, Chinese Academy
of Sciences, Shanghai (Liu et al. 1994; Liu et al. 1993a; Liu et al. 1993b; Xia et al. 1991; Yin 1998a, b; Yin & Liu
1996; Yin & Zhang 2001), Chen Jun, Xie Ling-De, Li Kai from Shaanxi Normal University, Xi'an (Chen 1994;
Chen & Zheng 1995a, b;1996; Li et al. 2010a, b; Li & Zheng 1998; Xie 2003, 2004, 2005, Xie & Ou 2005; Xie et

University, Taichung (Yang 1995, 1998; Yang & Chang 1996; Yang & Yang 2012; Yang & Yang 1994, 1995; Yang
& Yen 2001a, b) reported many cricket new species. Especially, Yin Hai-Sheng and Liu Xian-Wei published
“Synopsis on the Classification of Grylloidea and Gryllotalpoidea from China” in 1995 as one of the notable
landmark. At present, Liu Hao-Yu, Ma Li-Bin and He Zhu-Qing are still working on taxonomy of crickets, and
they reported all new species since 2006 (Gorochov & He 2017; He 2012; He & Gorochov 2015; He et al. 2010;
He et al. 2009, He et al. 2017a, He et al. 2017b, He et al. 2016, Li et al. 2010a, b; Li et al. 2007; Liu et al. 2015a;
Liu et al. 2016a; Liu et al. 2014; Liu & Shi 2007, 2011a, b, c; 2012a, b, c; 2013; 2014a, b, c; 2015a, b, c; Liu et al.
2006; Liu et al. 2016b; 2017; Liu et al. 2015b; Ma & Gorochov 2015; Ma et al. 2015a; Ma et al. 2015b; Ma et al.
2015c; Ma et al. 2016; Ma et al. 2008; Ma et al. 2015d; Ma & Zhang 2010; 2011a, b; 2012; 2013; 2015a, b; Shi &
Liu 2007; Wang et al. 2017; Wu & Liu 2017; Zhang et al. 2017a, b; Zong et al. 2017). However, reviewed books or
articles on Chinese crickets have not been reported for over 20 years except for the Nemobiinae (Liu et al. 2016a).
Here, I summarize all these researches and list the species with their distributions from China. Distribution in Hong
Kong and Macao is substituted for Guangdong province. Distribution of Beijing and Tianjin is substituted for
Hebei province. Distribution of Shanghai is substituted for Zhejiang province. Reasons for this are that these areas
are too small to be considered as geographically separate. Literature is provided for descriptions, distributions in
China, and/or generic changes and keys to species. Species representing new records are deposited in East China
Normal University (ECNU).

A CHECKLIST OF CHINESE CRICKETS (ORTHOPTERA: GRYLL IDEA)
Discussion
1 Modicogryllus (Modicogryllus) maculatus (Shiraki, 1930) is considered Comidoblemmus Storozhenko & Paik,
2009 as C. maculatus (Shiraki, 1930) comb. nov. by study of photos of type specimens on Orthoptera Species Files
Online.
2 Genus Goniogryllus was established on the species punctatus from Fujian, China (Chopard, 1936a). Absence
of wings is one of the important characters for this genus. Qingryllus was established on species striofemorus from
Shaanxi, China (Chen & Zheng, 1995a). Well developed wings is the main character to distinguish it from
Goniogryllus. In 1996, a Goniogryllus sp. with short wings was published as ovalatus (Chen & Zheng, 1996).
From that time, identification characters for these two genera has been ambiguous. I compared the COI genes
between G. ovalatus and Q. striofemorus, and found they were totally same. I suspect G. spp. show varied
phenotypes to be published as different species. Here, I do not make synonym of species, because more data is
needed. But Qingryllus Chen & Zheng, 1995 syn. is considered to be the junior synonym of Goniogryllus Chopard,
1936.
3 There are many species recorded from China based on the morphology of the frons in this genus. But these
features are variable due to environmental factors (He & Takeda 2014). Thus, there may be some
misidentifications. DNA markers and/or songs should be used in future research. Loxoblemmus abotus Wang ,
1992, Loxoblemmus brevipalpus Wang, 1992, Loxoblemmus neoarietulus Wang, 1992, Loxoblemmus subangulatus
Yang, 1992 have not been officially published (Hsiung 1993).
4 Loxoblemmus angulatus Bey-Bienko, 1956 is widely distributed in south China. Most research papers cite
this species. But this species has no taxonomic or morphological differences with Loxoblemmus appendicularis
Shiraki, 1930 with the latter one widely distributed in Taiwan. Thus, L. angulatus Bey-Bienko, 1956 syn. is
considered to be the junior synonym of L. appendicularis.
5 Modicogryllus (Modicogryllus) consobrinus (Saussure, 1877) is usually identified as Modicogryllus
(Modicogryllus) confirmatus (Walker, 1859) by Yin & Liu (1995).
6 Svercacheta siamensis (Chopard, 1961) is identified as Tartarogryllus minusculus Walker, 1869 by Yin &
Liu (1995).
7 Holotype of Cophogryllus kuhlgatzi Karny, 1908 is a nymph of Teleogryllus (Brachyteleogryllus) occipitalis
occipitalis (Serville, 1838). Thus, C. kuhlgatzi syn. is considered to be the junior synonym of T. (B.) occipitalis
occipitalis.
8 Velarifictorus (Velarifictorus) koshunensis (Shiraki, 1911) is considered under genus Turanogryllus
Tarbinsky, 1940 as T. koshunensis (Shiraki, 1911) comb. nov. as indicated by photos of type specimens on
Orthoptera Species Files Online.
9 Some species are widely distributed from south to north. Their life cycles can change from nymph diapause
to egg diapause, from biovoltine to univoltine, from short ovipositor to long ovipositor, which are all adaptations to
local climate. These situations also occur in many other insect groups, but they are always to be considered as one
species. Thus, here I consider Velarifictorus (Velarifictorus) aspersus borealis Gorochov, 1985 syn. as the junior
synonym of V. (V.) aspersus aspersus (Walker, 1869). Now there is no subspecies under this species.

10 Modicogryllus (Modicogryllus) latefasciatus (Chopard, 1933) syn. is a phenotype of Velarifictorus
(Velarifictorus) micado (Saussure, 1877). There is a thin white stripe between stemmata in most V. (V.) micado
individuals. But sometimes there is a big white or yellow area between stemmata instead of the thin stripe. Thus, I
consider M. (M.) latefasciatus syn. as the junior synonym of V. (V.) micado. Japanese researcher consider V. (V.)
micado individuals in south Japan as V. (V.) grylloides (Chopard, 1969) or V. (V.) ryukyuensis Oshiro, 1990. But I
consider all individuals in China and Japan as one species V. (V.) micado. See discussion 9.
11 Velarifictorus (Velarifictorus) ornatus caudatus (Shiraki, 1930) syn. is the macropterous individual of V. (V.)
ornatus ornatus (Shiraki, 1911). Therefore, there are no subspecies under this species.

16 Dianemobius nigrofasciatus (Matsumura, 1904) syn. is the north group of Dianemobius fascipes (Walker,
1869). See discussion 9.
17 Polionemobius mikado (Shiraki, 1911) syn. is the north group of Polionemobius taprobanensis (Walker,
1869). See discussion 9.
18 male, CHINA, Jilin, Changbaishan, 10-vii-2016, coll. He Zhu-Qing.

20 male, CHINA, Zhejiang, Hangzhou, 1-x-2017, coll. He Zhu-Qing.
21 Holotype of Gryllotalpa oryctes Scudder, 1869 syn. is from Shanghai, China. Thus, it should be considered
as the junior synonym of Gryllotalpa orientalis Burmeister, 1838, not Gryllotalpa africana africana Palisot de
Beauvois, 1805.
