Invitation to take part in the conference
Family is for a man a natural upbringing environment, centre of life, as well as a source, from which one
takes his values and attitudes. It is impossible to overestimate the importance of family or to ignore in the
academic discourse all the transformations which it is going through. Much has been already written about
family in academic literature, Polish as well as international, as for centuries it has been one of the most
important cells of society and the point of reference for successive generations. Family through its dynamics
of transformation adapts to new conditions. Speaking metaphorically, even though family is pulled about
by winds of history, culture, and economy, it still remains, transforming and letting the coming generations
grow. us, it is continuously a source of academic inspiration and the subject of researchers representing
various elds of knowledge.
e proposed title of the conference only suggests some time-frame. 1918 was the year of the end
of First World War, the eects of which have encompassed the whole planet. For Poland it is an especially
signicant date, as in this year the Polish people have regained their independence aer over a century
of captivity. It was an important year for all families, who were to verify, whether upbringing of succes-
sive generations of a state non-existent on the map of Europe, has made them ready to live in freedom
and sovereignty. It has also put citizens face to face with challenges not met before: setting a new legal
order, creating foundations of a modern economy, and adapting to the new social perspective. In 2018
Poland will celebrate the 100th anniversary of regaining independence. What were (during this incredibly
dynamic century) the transformations of family functions? With what experience is family entering the
new century of a free state?
e experience of Poland makes 2018 a unique year, however the dynamics of this post-war century
have le their mark on almost every country of the world. What were the transformations of family func-
tions in Europe and in the whole world? What is the portrayal of contemporary family? What were the
transformations of authority of parents in their children’s upbringing? What were and are the relationships
between family and school in the process of upbringing? To what extent organizations, associations have
worked for the family? What were the transformations of the systemic and legal framework within which
family functions?
