Herbal drinks are generally produced from the natural ingredients of different morphological plant parts, namely leaves, stems, roots, fruits, buds, and flowers which have long been consumed through generations. Nowadays, research on herbal drinks receives less attention, resulting in a lack of understanding regarding their benefits. This review aims to summarize the emergence and potential commercialization of traditional herbal drinks which are widely marketed for their health benefit. The information on physicochemical (total soluble solids, pH, titratable acidity), phytochemicals (flavonoids, tannin, phenolic acids, curcumin, terpenoids), and pharmacological properties (antioxidants activities, antibacterial, antimicrobial and antifungal activities) of herbal drinks were discussed. The herbs and their processes employed in the preparation of herbal drinks are predicted to have a significant impact on their physicochemical, phytochemical, and pharmacological properties. In addition, the phytochemical components present in the herbs are expected to influence the pharmacological properties of herbal drinks. Ultimately, herbal drinks have the potential to be commercialized and be served as healthy drink products with numerous health benefits and appeal to people to consume herbal drinks.

... These problems affect agricultural productivity in many sectors, including the tea industry (Cody, 2017). In recent times, concerns have been raised regarding tea cultivation and production processes resulting in changes in consumer purchasing behaviour (Hajra, 2017;Karalliyadda & Kazunari, 2020). For instance, research shows an evidential decline in annual per capita consumption of conventional tea in developed countries due to growing interest in safe and health-related products (Thushara, 2015). ...

The organic movement have considered itself the growing drive for today’s consumers purchasing behaviour and growing attention from mainstream media. However, it has not fully received the attention to increase the organic tea industry to benefit humanity and natural ecosystems. The effect is that the future is uncertain as current challenges continue to pose threats to the industry. A systematic review was done to examine the overview of organic tea production challenges and prospects within the scope of sustainable farming. The findings showed that the unprecedented challenges are currently facing the global organic tea industry, which includes high competition for agricultural land, convention of organic lands for other purposes and urbanization activities in tea-growing countries. Biotic and abiotic stresses are major limits to agricultural production. Lack of knowledge on organic practices and high input costs affect the adoption of organic farming. However, the growth and new marketing trends in Asia-Pacific is an excellent sustainable indicator. Besides, stakeholders commitment is needed to implement and comply with applicable laws and supports to ensure industry development and sustainability. The current study is the first to have put together literatures on the global challenges and prospects of the organic tea industry within sustainable agriculture.

Promoting organic tea farming is becoming popular as conventional intensive tea farming is facing emerging environmental and social problems. This study aimed to explore the determinants of farmers’ conversion decision from conventional to organic tea in the Neluwa Sinharaja buffer zone of Sri Lanka. A questionnaire survey of 200 organic and inorganic tea farmers was done in the data collection. Descriptive analysis, Mann-Whitney test, and logistic regression were employed in data analysis. The majority of farmers in both farming systems was male and was within the 41-50 age group. Farmgate price of organic tea varied between 90-117 LKR kg-1 while conventional tea prices ranged from 70-93 LKR kg-1 . Organic tea farming reported better economic performances: high product price, maximum utilization of onfarm/community resources, and low cost of production as well as better environmental performances like discharging non-polluted water, enhancing soil fertility, and reduced soil erosion, compared to conventional tea farming. Logistic regression revealed that, farming experiences (OR=0.218), training participation (OR=4.348), access to extension services (OR=7.509), size of households (OR=1.963), farm gate price (OR=1.829), yield (OR= -0.003), and total cost (OR=1.000) as determinants significantly (p<0.05) affecting on conversion decision from conventional to organic tea farming while the land extent (OR=0.096) was a significantly affecting determinant only at 10% significance level in Neluwa Sinharaja buffer zone. The study recommends focusing on the aforesaid significant determinants that motivate farmers to convert from conventional to organic tea farming in other potential areas in the country.
... In 2015, approximately 75,000 tonnes of registered organic tea were produced worldwide, valued at around USD 765 million. It is forecast that organic tea will experience a rapid growth of 6-13% per year due to the increasing demand for a chemical-free tea by consumers (Hajra 2017). Tea is one of the most important crops in Vietnam, as both an export and domestic commodity. In Vietnam, tea farming has been dominated by conventional management practices for decades. The continuity of this approach has led to a number of issues. These range from serious soil degradation, low economic efficiency, poor tea quality and environmental contamination. Recently, there has been a growing conversion from conventional tea farming to agroecological tea management practices. To date, limited studies have been conducted to determine the viability of this conversion in Vietnam, particularly regarding technical aspects. Focusing on aspects of soil health, tea productivity and quality, here we highlight the benefits and challenges of conventional tea production system and provide a comprehensive evaluation of potential advantages agroecological tea management practices could have for Vietnam. The outcomes of this review are an informative resource for tea producers, tea production management authorities and other relevant organizations; enabling more informed decisions regarding the management methods, policies and programs to promote agroecological tea management in Vietnam and other tea producing nations.Graphic abstract

This study investigates factors that predict consumers’ perceptions of healthiness of organic tea. Furthermore, this study also examines the relationship between perceived healthiness and purchase intention with the mediating role of consumers’ attitudes toward organic tea. Because China has been the largest producer and the largest market of the global tea market, this study collects sample data from consumers at different tea stores in China. Using structural equation modelling to analyze data, results indicate that product quality, consumer service, in-store experience, store prestige, and store innovativeness are important predictors of consumers’ perceptions of healthiness of organic tea. Furthermore, results show that perceived healthiness has a positive influence on purchase intention toward organic tea. Consumers’ attitudes toward organic tea also has a positive mediating effect into this relationship.

The objective of this chapter is to examine value chain governance through case studies of four different certified value chains for Tanzanian tea. This chapter takes a look at a traditional export commodity, tea, and discusses the implications of involvement in value-based certification schemes (Ethical Trading Initiative, Fairtrade, Organic and Rainforest Alliance) on certified producers in Tanzania. Each of these certification schemes makes claims on specific values that it is instilling in a particular ‘value chain’. This paper specifically analyses the network construction of each certified value chain and answers the questions: 1) which actors are involved in each value chain, 2) which values are claimed as organizing principles of these value chains, and 3) what does this mix of actors and values contribute to our understanding of value chain governance. Between 2008 and 2010, eighty in-depth interviews were conducted with stakeholders who are certified against sustainability standards. Twenty-one focus groups were formed comprising certified smallholders and hired labourers. The conclusions suggest that despite claims about the ability to change trading relationships through the certification systems, most of the old networks are still in place. The certification systems only add additional buyers to global value chains that were already governed by highly relational and hierarchical mechanisms. These conclusions thus place in question some of the claims made by certification bodies as to their abilities to change practices.
