Abstract and Figures

The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of two different quality roughage (wheat straw and alfalfa hay) supplies on live weight gain, growth, feed intake and feed efficiency of Holstein calves during the preweaning period. With this purpose, 30 male and female Holstein calves were divided into two treatment groups (15 calves in each group) based on gender and birth weights. The first group was fed with a total mixed diet containing 80% calf starter and 20% alfalfa hay (chopped in 1-2 cm pieces) as a high quality roughage source and the second group was fed with a total mixed diet containing 80% calf starter and 20% wheat straw (chopped in 1-2 cm pieces) as a low quality roughage source during the preweaning period. The results revealed that feeding with high quality roughage (alfalfa hay) decreased feed intake (P<0.05) but didn’t affect live weight and growth parameters (P>0.05) at the moment of weaning after 8 week preweaning period. Because of lower feed consumption without impairing calf performance and improved feed conversation efficiency, it can be suggested that high quality roughage could be supplied to calves in addition to calf starter feed during the preweaning period but meanwhile economic parameters like feed costs must be taken into account.

ABSTRACT

ÖZET
Bu çalışmada, Holstein buzağılarda sütten kesim öncesi dönemde iki farklı kalitedeki kaba yem kullanımının (kıyılmış
halde kuru yonca otu ve buğday sapı) büyüme, gelişme, yem tüketimi ve yemden yararlanma özellikleri üzerindeki
etkileri araştırılmıştır. Bu amaçla toplam 30 baş erkek ve dişi Holstein buzağı cinsiyet ve doğum ağırlıkları göz önünde
bulundurularak her birinde 15 baş olmak üzere 2 deneme grubuna dağıtılmıştır. Birinci muamele grubunun % 80

1. Introduction
In dairy operations, proper growth and feeding of
newborn calves are signicant issues for replacing
the dairy cows with the young ones. While milk
constitutes about 60% of total facility income,
calf and stock capital gain constitute 40% of total
income. In other words, number of calves raised in
the facility has a great impact on protability of the
operation (Erez 2011).
Including calves, proventriculus (rumen, reticulum
and omasum) of young ruminants is not developed
sufciently during the initial periods of their lives.
Early weaning without much inuencing the
calf performance may increase marketable milk
production of the operation and protein supplements
to the feeds cost less than the protein supplied with
the milk (Turgut et al 1998). Thus, roughage and
concentrate feeds should be used efciently and
proventriculus of calves should be developed as
fast as possible to stimulate rumen development.
Proventriculus development will be possible with
the use of solid feeds (Göncü et al 2010). Several
researchers indicated that roughages could be used
for normal development of rumen throughout the
preweaning period (Beharka et al 1998; Coverdale
et al 2004; Waterman 2005; Van Ackeren et al
2009). Usage of roughages during the preweaning
period may have stimulating impact on rumination
(Lyford & Huber 1988), improve rumen action,
volume and muscularity (Tamate et al 1962)
and support epithelium and papilla development
(Wardrop 1961). Parallel to this, some researchers
have recommended the addition of roughage to the
starter for optimum rumen development (Anderson
et al 1987; Greenwood et al 1997), but some
other researchers (Heinrichs & Lesmeister 2000;
Lizieire et al 2002; Harris & Shearer 2003; Jones
& Heinrichs 2007) did not recommend roughage
during preweaning period. However, calf rearing
without roughage was seen possible only for short-
term weaning programs (<30 days) (Hibbs et al
1956; Leibholz 1975; Porter et al 2007).
It was indicated in studies investigating
the effects of roughage forms of the ration that
roughage forms did not have any signicant impacts
on growth performance of the calves (Leaver 1973;
Kang & Leibholz 1973). It was also indicated
in a previous study that wheat straw chopped at
different lengths (1.5, 4.8 and 7.9 mm) did not yield
signicant differences in growth performance of
calves (Pickard et al 1969).
Grass and legume hay and straw are common
sources of ber in the diet of the young calf. The
quality of these forage sources greatly affects the
palatability and the digestibility of the diet (Booth
2003). Differences in feed quality attributes were
numerically assessed thorough relative feed value.
Previous researchers investigated relative feed
values of dry alfalfa hay and wheat straw (Yavuz
2005) and assessed digestibility and energy levels of
different roughages (Denek & Deniz 2004). Güngör
et al (2008) reported higher crude nutrient contents

ancak buna rağmen 8 haftalık süt ile besleme programı sonunda sütten kesim ağırlıklarını ve iskelet gelişimlerini
etkilemediği (P>0.05) tespit edilmiştir. Bu noktadan hareketle, buzağıların performanslarının etkilenmeden daha az yem
ile sütten kesilmelerine olanak sağlaması ayrıca yem çevirim kabiliyetlerini artırması (P<0.05) gibi faydaları göz önünde
bulundurularak sütten kesim öncesi dönemde buzağıların kesif yeme ek olarak kaliteli kaba yemler ile beslenmesinin
ekonomik faktörlerin de göz önünde bulundurulması koşuluyla uygun olacağı sonucuna varılmıştır.

for alfalfa than for wheat straw and indicated alfalfa
as a quality roughage source.
There are several studies carried out about the
effects of different preweaning milk feeding periods
(Ozkaya & Toker 2012; Kocyigit et al 2015; Ayaşan
et al 2015), feeding with roughage and without
roughage (Göncü et al 2010; Daneshvar et al 2015)
and different feed forms (Montoro et al 2013;
Jahani-Moghadam et al 2015) and the studies about
the effects of different roughage sources on calf
performance have come into prominence (Zanton
& Heinrichs 2009; Castells et al 2012; Terré et al
2013). However, despite all these studies, effects of
roughage quality on calf performance are not clear,
yet. Therefore, the present study was conducted
to investigate the effects of roughage quality in 8
weeks preweaning period on calf performance.
2. Material and Methods
The present study was conducted with 30 Holstein
calves in a livestock facility located in Kayseri
province of Turkey (latitude: 38.73695, longitude:
35.49683). Two treatment groups were formed
with 15 calves consuming poor and high quality
roughage. Calves were tried to be placed in treatment
groups as much equally as possible based on gender
(8 males and 7 females in each treatment group),
age (all of the calves were born from the mothers at
the same age within 24 hours), amount of colostrum
intake and live weight (Table 1). Experiments were
implemented throughout 8 weeks of preweaning
period. The rst treatment group (dry alfalfa hay-
DAH) was supplied with 80% calf starter feed
obtained from a commercial feed factory in Kayseri
and 20% dry alfalfa hay chopped at 1-2 cm pieces
as a quality roughage source in addition to milk
from the 14th day of birth. The second group (wheat
straw-WS) was supplied with total mixed ration
(TMR) composed of 80% calf starter feed and 20%
dry wheat straw chopped at 1-2 cm pieces as a poor
quality roughage source. All calves were fed ad
libitum.
Calves were housed in individual pens
throughout the experiments and straw bedding was
used over pen oors. The calves stayed with their
mothers in the rst day. They took colostrum within
maximum 2 hours from the birth and colostrum
was supplied to calves for 3 days with a feeding
bottle. From the 3rd day till weaning, the calves
consumed a total of 4 liters whole milk (the average
values obtained from the analyses performed on
morning milk samples taken in every two weeks
by using FOSS FT120 milk analysis device: fat
3.81%, protein 3.09%, lactose 4.49% and fat-free
dry matter 8.19%) daily in two diets with a nipple
bucket. All calves consumed a total of 212 liters
milk throughout 8 weeks of milk-feeding period.
Clean drinking water was supplied ad libitum.
Calves were weighed in every two weeks
starting from the birth with an electronic scale
(100 kg ± 0.001 kg) to calculate live weight gains.
Feeds (hay and concentrated feed) were weighed
every day to determine daily feed consumption of
the calves. Skeletal growth was determined through
measuring the chest girths, withers heights and hip
widths in accordance with the methods specied
in literature (Heinrichs & Lammers 1998). Feed
conversion rates were calculated by dividing daily
dry matter intake (g) with daily live weight gain (g).
The changes in live weights were determined by
subtracting birth weights from the live weights at
the end of experiments (56th day).
Analyses of dry matter (DM), crude ash (CA),
crude protein (CP) and crude fat (CF) contents of

roughage sources (wheat straw and alfalfa hay)
were carried out in accordance with AOAC (1998);
acid detergent ber (ADF) and neutral detergent
ber (NDF) analyses were carried out in accordance
with Van Soest et al (1991); metabolic energy (ME)
and organic matter digestibility (OMD) values were
calculated with the equation developed by Menke
et al (1979) by using the amount of gases released
after 24 hours fermentation through in vitro gas
production technique. Rumen uid was obtained
from two stulated sheep fed twice daily with a diet
containing alfalfa hay (60%) and concentrate feed
(40%). About 0.200 g dry samples were weighed in
triplicate into the calibrated 100 mL glass syringes.
The syringes were pre-warmed to 39 °C before the
injection of 30 mL rumen uid-buffer mixture into
each syringe followed by incubation in a water bath
at 39 °C. Readings of gas production were recorded
before incubation (0) and 24 h after incubation.
The metabolic energy (ME) (Mcal kg-1 DM) of
feedstuffs was calculated according to Menke et al
(1979) (Equation 1).

The organic matter digestibility (OMD) of
feedstuffs was calculated according to Menke et al
(1979) (Equation 2).

The equations specied by Van Dyke &
Anderson (2000) were used determine relative feed
value (RFV) (Table 2) of roughage sources used in
experiments. Relative feed values were calculated
by using digestible dry matter (DDM) and dry
matter intake (DMI) values. Digestible dry matter
was calculated by using ADF and dry matter intake
was calculated by using NDF values. Results are
provided in Table 2.

Descriptive statistics for studied variables were
presented as mean and standard errors. Experimental
results were subjected to the independent samples t-test
to determine whether or not the differences between
the groups were signicant. Signicance level was
considered as 5% and SPSS statistical software was
used in all statistical analyses (SPSS 2002).
3. Results and Discussion
Daily feed consumption (DFC), initial live weights
(ILW), mid-experiment (4th week) live weights
(MLW), nal live weights (FLW), daily live weight
gains (LWG), feed conversion ratios (FCR), initial
chest girths (ICG), mid-experiment (4th week) chest
girths (MCG), nal chest girths (FCG), initial hip
widths (IHW), mid-experiment (4th week) hip
widths (MHW), nal hip widths (FHW), initial
withers heights (IWH), mid-experiment (4th week)
withers heights (MWH), nal withers heights
(FWH), changes in live weights (CLW), changes in
chest girths (CCG), changes in hip widths (CHW)
and changes in withers heights (CWH) of the calves
fed with different quality roughages throughout 8
week preweaning period are provided in Table 3.

The differences in initial, mid-experiment
and nal live weights, daily live weight gains,
changes in live weights, initial, mid-experiment
and nal chest girths, changes in chest girths,
initial, mid-experiment and nal hip widths,
changes in hip widths, initial, mid-experiment
and nal withers heights and changes in withers
heights of experimental groups were not found to
be signicant (P>0.05). It was reported in previous
studies (Greenwood et al 1997; Beharka et al 1998;
Coverdale et al 2004; Suarez et al 2007; Castells
et al 2012) that calf performance and live weights
varied based on weaning age, type of roughage
supply (ad libitum or TMR), form of roughage
supply (hay or smaller pieces) and roughage (e.g.,
alfalfa hay, straw, grass hay, fresh grass, corn
silage). In this study, similar growth performance
and weaning weights of the calves fed with high

and low quality roughage were probably resulted
from equal milk feeding (4 L day-1) of treatment
groups, relatively low ratios (20%) of roughage
in TMR and relatively shorter treatment durations
(14-56th days).
On the other hand, roughage quality had
signicant impacts on daily feed consumptions
and feed conversion ratios (P<0.05). While the
daily average feed consumption of the calves fed
with alfalfa hay as a roughage was 859.65 g, the
value was observed to be 883.26 g in treatment
group fed with wheat straw (P<0.05). The calves
fed with wheat straw throughout the preweaning
period had higher feed consumptions than the
calves fed with alfalfa hay. Complying with the
ndings of earlier studies (Beharka et al 1998;
Booth 2003; Coverdale et al 2004; Suarez et al
2007), use of low quality roughage instead of
high quality roughage in rations increased daily
feed consumptions throughout the preweaning
period. However, current ndings conict with
those observed by Castells et al (2012) who
observed greater DFC in calves fed with WS than
DAH. However in that study, roughage was not
supplied in TMR, they were supplied freely, thus
the animals fed with WS consumed 5% roughage
and the ones fed with DAH consumed 15%
roughage. Therefore, the DGC values were higher
than the present values. Since the wheat straw
used in present study had 1.58% less dry matter
content than alfalfa hay (Table 2), the difference
in dry matter contents might have an increasing
effect on feed consumption. Such a difference in
feed consumptions might have also resulted from
higher digestible nutrient content of alfalfa hay
than wheat straw and consequently the calves fed
with alfalfa hay was able to meet their nutritional
needs with less feed consumption. Furthermore,
increasing feed intakes with low quality roughage
might be due to a bulky effect, which helps to
stimulate rumination and improve rumen pH of
young calves, instead of an increase of the NDF
content of the diet (Booth 2003).
Feed conversion ratio of the treatment group
fed with wheat straw (1.61) was higher than the
ratio in alfalfa consuming group (1.54) (P<0.05).
Lower feed conversion ratios indicate better
conversions, in other words less feed consumptions
for unit live weight gain. Accordingly, while the
daily feed consumption of the treatment group
fed with alfalfa hay (DAH) was 859.65 g and the
daily live weight gain of the group was 557.14 g,
the values were respectively observed as 883.26
g (DFC) and 548.21 g (LWG) in treatment group
fed with wheat straw (WS). Complying with the
earlier ndings (Leaver 1973; Greenwood et al
1997; Booth 2003; Coverdale et al 2004), feed
conversion ability of the calves fed with high
quality roughage throughout the preweaning
period was better than the calves fed with low
quality roughage. Again higher digestible nutrient
and lower NDF content of alfalfa hay than wheat
straw (Table 2) resulted in higher nutrient intake
in alfalfa consumed calves than in wheat straw
consumed calves, thus better feed conversions in
alfalfa group.
4. Conclusions
Current ndings revealed that calf feeding with
quality roughage throughout the preweaning period
in addition to concentrate feed decreased the feed
consumption of the calves (P<0.05). However such
a feeding program throughout the 8 weeks of milk-
fed period did not signicantly inuence weaning
weights and skeletal development of the calves
(P>0.05). It was concluded that quality roughage
supply in addition to concentrate feed was found
to be a convenient approach to allow weaning
of calves with less feed consumption without
impairing their performances and to improve feed
conversion abilities of the calves in an economical
fashion (P<0.05). The present study can be
considered as an initial step for further studies and
as an indicator for producer-level practices. There
is a need for further studies to investigate the
rumen development of calves reared with different
quality roughages, to assess further performance of
calves and to evaluate the effects on dairy and beef
cattle separately.

The provision of forage to pre-weaned calves has been continuously researched and discussed by scientists, though results associated with calf growth and performance have remained inconsistent. Multiple factors, including forage type, intake level, physical form, and feeding method of both solid and liquid feed, can influence the outcomes of forage inclusion on calf performance. In the current review, we summarized published literature in order to get a comprehensive understanding of how early forage inclusion in diets affects calf growth performance, rumen fermentation, microbiota composition, and the development of feeding behavior. A small amount of good quality forage, such as alfalfa hay, supplemented in the diet, is likely to improve calf feed intake and growth rate. Provision of forage early in life may result in greater chewing (eating and ruminating) activity. Moreover, forage supplementation decreases non-nutritive oral and feed sorting behaviors, which can help to maintain rumen fluid pH and increase the number of cellulolytic bacteria in the rumen. This review argues that forage provision early in life has the potential to affect the rumen environment and the development of feeding behavior in dairy calves. Continued research is required to further understand the long-term effects of forage supplementation in pre-weaned calves, because animal-related factors, such as feed selection and sorting, early in life may persist until later in adult life.

Cilj ovog istraživanja bio je usporediti učinak dodavanja sojinog proteina, nukleotida te pojedinačnih aminokiselina u starter smjesu za telad na eksterijerne odlike i tjelesnu masu teladi. Pokus je proveden na 20 životinja ravnomjerno raspoređenih u dvije skupine, kontrolnu (K) i pokusnu (P) pri čemu je u svakoj skupini bio ujednačen omjer muške i ženske teladi. Istraživanje je trajalo od teljenja do prosječne starosne dobi od 91 dana. Praćenje tjelesnih mjera izvršeno je u četiri navrata uz pomoć Lydtinova štapa i mjerne vrpce. Mjerenje i vaganje provedeno je 6., 24., 50. i 91. dana prosječne starosti. Određivani su sljedeći pokazatelji: tjelesna masa, dužina tijela, visina grebena, opseg trupa, opseg prsa, širina prsa, dubina prsa, visina kuka te širina kuka. Na temelju dobivenih vrijednosti tjelesnih mjera izračunati su indeks anamorfoznosti, tjelesne kompaktnosti te indeks tjelesne dužine i prsa. Telad se napajala svježim nepasteriziranim punomasnim mlijekom u dva obroka dnevno, 3 L ujutro i 3 L navečer. Čvrsta hrana u obliku peletirane starter smjese i voda ponuđeni su ad libitum od četvrtog dana starosti do prosječne starosti od 63 dana. U starter smjesu pokusne skupine dodani su nukleotidi kvasaca, sojin proteinski koncentrat te dvije limitirajuće aminokiseline – metionin i lizin. Nakon toga, telad se hranila jednom dnevno s prijelaznim obrokom kroz 3 dana. Telad iz obje skupine je do 91. dana starosti hranjena jednom dnevno obrokom u obliku TMR-a. Ukupna ponuđena količina obroka bila je 4,1 kg ST/ tele/ dan. Kod dobivenih rezultata statistički značajna razlika nije utvrđena za promatrane pokazatelje, jedino vrijednosti indeksa anamorfoznosti imaju tendenciju viših vrijednosti (P = 0,055) kod kontrolne skupine. Prema dobivenim rezultatima zaključuje se kako dodavanje sojinog proteina, nukleotida te limitirajućih aminokiselina nije značajno utjecalo na većinu promatranih pokazatelja kod teladi te su potrebna daljnja istraživanja kako bi se utvrdio njihov učinak.

Inclusion of forage and its physical form in starter may affect rumen development, average daily gain (ADG), and dry matter intake (DMI) of dairy calves. To evaluate the effects of forage and its physical form (chopped vs. pelleted) on growth of calves under a high milk feeding regimen, 32 Holstein calves (38.8 ± 1.1 kg) were assigned at birth to 1 of 3 treatments in a completely randomized block design. Dietary treatments (% of dry matter) were (1) 100% semi-texturized starter (CON); (2) 90% semi-texturized starter + 10% chopped alfalfa hay (mean particle size = 5.4 mm) as a total mixed ration (TMR; CH); and (3) 90% semi-texturized starter + 10% pelleted alfalfa (mean = 5.8 mm) hay as a TMR (PH). Data were subjected to mixed model analysis with contrasts used to evaluate effect of forage inclusion. Calves were weaned at 76 d of age and the experiment finished 2 wk after weaning. Individual milk and solid feed consumption were recorded daily. Solid feed consumption and ADG increased as age increased (effect of week), but neither forage inclusion nor physical form of forage affected these variables pre- or postweaning. Plasma urea N was affected by treatments such that the CON group had a lower concentration than forage-fed groups. Forage inclusion, but not physical form, resulted in increased total protein in plasma. Although days with elevated rectal temperature, fecal score, and general appearance were not affected by dietary treatments, calves fed alfalfa hay during the first month of life had fewer days with respiratory issues, regardless of physical form of hay. We concluded that provision of forage does have some beneficial effects in calves fed large amounts of milk replacer, but pelleted alfalfa hay did not result in any improvement in calf performance or health. The objectives of this study were to compare the effect of different doses of direct-fed microbials (DFM) plus exogenous fibrolytic enzymes (EFE) additives on the growth performance, feed efficiency ratio and fecal consistency index of Brown Swiss and Holstein Friesian calves. Twenty six calves were assigned to three groups (control, 10 g and 20 g per head/day of DFM plus EFE) according to breeds. Calves in 10 g per head/day of DFM plus EFE group in pre- and post-weaning periods had 20.0 % and 6.3 % higher total weight gains than calves in the control group respectively. However, the effects of breeds and dosages of the supplement on the weights, weight gains and feed efficiency ratios were not significant. Purchased dairy calves were raised for 8 wk in unbedded, elevated stalls and given no forage to examine impact of of-fering no roughage on the growth and de-velopment of neonatal calves. High and low fiber starter diets were fed in pellet or coarse mash forms. Calves were fed milk replacer until weaned after 4 wk on trial. Calves were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 diet groups: low fiber pellet, low fiber coarse mash, high fiber pellet, and high fiber coarse mash. The pelleted feeds had an average particle size of 888 m and the coarse mashes averaged 2,014 m. Diets and water were fed ad libitum throughout the trial. Calves on coarse mash diets gained 0.64 kg/d from wk 4 to 8 and 0.41 kg/d from 0 to 8 wk, which was greater than 0.51 and 0.32 kg/d respective gains of calves on pelleted diets (P < 0.05). Calves on coarse mash diets consumed 60.9 kg starter during the 8-wk period, which was greater (P < 0.05) than 47.6 kg con-sumed by calves on pelleted starters. Digestibility was greater (P < 0.05) in coarse mash than pelleted diets with the exception of CP, which was similar. Digestible and ME were also greater in low fiber than high fiber diets and greater in coarse mash than pelleted diets (P < 0.01). The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of amount of milk fed, weaning age and difference of starter protein levels on growth performance of female Holstein Friesian calves. Forty Holstein calves were housed in individual boxes. Calves were divided into 2 groups (n=20); first group was fed with whole milk with the amount of 10 % of their body weight (BW), while the second group was fed with whole milk with the amount of 8 % of their BW. These 2 groups were divided into sub-groups of calves (n=10 for each) again. One of the sub-groups was fed with whole milk for a period of 8 weeks, while the other group was fed with whole milk for a period of 5 weeks. Once again the sub-groups were divided into 2 groups (n=5 for each). One of these groups was fed with starter diet containing 22 % crude protein (CP), while the other group was fed with starter diet containing 18 % CP ad libitum as the starting feed. After an 8-week period, Calves which were fed by the whole milk of %10 of their BW were defined to be heavier than those which were fed by %8 whole milk of their BW. The effect of weaning age and protein level of starter on BW was not statistically significant. The results showed that the body weight gains of the calves receiving milk at 10 % of BW were better, early weaning tended to increase feed consumption and the protein levels did not affect the performance of calves

The objective of this study was to determine whether the improvement of performance of young calves associated with the supplementation of chopped grass hay reported in some studies is due to an increase in the total neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content of the consumed diet or to the provision of chopped grass hay. Sixty-three Holstein calves [9 ± 4.4 d old; mean ± standard deviation (SD)] were randomly distributed in 4 treatments resulting from the combination of 2 levels of NDF content of a pelleted starter and the supply or absence of forage provision: low-NDF starter (18%) with or without chopped oat hay, and high-NDF starter (27%) with or without chopped oat hay. All animals were fed the same milk replacer (21% crude protein and 19.2% fat) at the rate of 4 L/d at 15% dry matter from d 1 to 34, and 2 L/d at 15% dry matter from d 35 to 42 (weaning). The study finished 2 wk after weaning. Body weight was measured weekly and individual calf starter and hay intake was recorded daily. On d 50, blood samples were drawn 2 h after the morning concentrate offer to determine serum glucose and insulin concentrations. On d 52, samples of ruminal fluid were obtained via an esophageal tube, and pH was measured immediately. During the preweaning period, pelleted starter intake was similar among treatments, but average daily gain tended to be greater in low- than in high-NDF treatments (0.69 vs. 0.63 ± 0.020 kg/d, respectively; mean ± SD). However, during the 2 wk after weaning, supplementation of forage improved pelleted starter intake and average daily gain without affecting the gain-to-feed ratio. Probably, the greater pelleted starter intake observed in forage-supplemented calves was mainly due to the greater ruminal pH found in forage-supplemented calves compared with forage-deprived calves (5.81 vs. 5.05 ± 0.063, respectively). Blood insulin-to-glucose ratio was greater in forage-supplemented compared with unsupplemented calves [mean ± SD; 6.53 vs. 4.24 ± 0.125 insulin (ng/L)-to-glucose (mg/dL) ratio, respectively]. In conclusion, a low-NDF pelleted starter is recommended during the preweaning period, and the provision of chopped hay is necessary right after weaning to improve calf performance.

In this study, two total mixed rations (TMR, based on dry ingredients) consisting (per kg dry matter (DM)) of 300 or 400g finely chopped hay mixture of grass and alfalfa (H30 versus H40) were compared concerning their effects on dry matter intake (DMI), ruminal fermentation patterns and chewing activity of early-weaned (8 weeks milk-fed) calves. Ten ruminally cannulated male German Holstein calves were randomly assigned to two dietary treatments (n=5) and observed from an age of 8–15 weeks. One group received the H30 (11.3MJ metabolizable energy (ME)/kg DM) and the other the H40 (10.7MJ ME/kg DM) TMR. All calves received grass hay (9.0MJ ME/kg DM) separately. Water, TMR and hay were offered ad libitum twice daily (08:00 and 16:00h). Rumen fluid was collected via cannula at an age of 9, 11, 13 and 15 weeks, twice weekly just prior to as well as 1, 3, 5 and 7h after morning feeding. Chewing activity was recorded by a special head collar. As the calves aged DMI increased rapidly congruent with the recommended range for weaned calves. Because of the differing energy supply, calves receiving the H30 TMR were heavier than calves receiving the H40 TMR (139kg versus 123kg, P=0.007). During the trial ruminal pH of all calves were within the target range (6.2±0.5), indicating physiological ruminal fermentation patterns. Daily mean ruminal pH was uninfluenced by treatment, however at an age of 13 and 15 weeks H30 showed a higher short chain fatty acid (SCFA) level than H40 (P=0.098; P=0.036). At an age of 15 weeks H30 showed a critical decrease in ruminal pH (3h after feeding: 5.7) corresponding to a higher ruminal SCFA concentration (148.2mmol/L, P=0.007). Chewing activity was well developed at an early age due to an increasing DMI after weaning. At an age of 15 weeks chewing activity (per day: 613–743min total chewing; 358–418min rumination) was similar to that of adult cows. In summary, feeding a dry TMR consisting per kg DM of 300–400g hay to early-weaned calves can be recommended for a successful calf rearing up to an age of 15 weeks.

This experiment was carried out to determine the nutrient contents and metabolizable energy (ME) levels of some roughages produced in Kirikkale region. Alfalfa hay, hungarian vetch hay, corn silage, dried crop corn, wheat straw, chickpea straw and grape pomace were used in this experiment. In this study the levels of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), ether extracts (EE) and crude ash (CA) in feed samples were determined by Weende Analysis methods and crude fibre (CF) quantities by Crampton and Maynard's method. Acid detergent fibre (ADF) and acid detergent lignin (ADL) contents were determined by Van Soest analysis. The equations developed by CF, ADF and ADL was used to calculate the ME values of feeds for ruminants. Dry matter values of the roughages varied between 90.12-95.31%. mean CP and CF levels were found as 20.26, 12.11, 5.61, 3.63, 12.15% and 24.71, 30.62, 33.30, 45.53, 33.52% for good quality alfalfa hay, low quality alfalfa hay, corn silage, wheat straw and grape pomace, respectively. In this study, the nutrient composition and energy values of some roughages produced in Kirikkale region were tabulated.
