Ego strengths and love: What lies beyond an intimate relationship?

Authors:

Abstract

Since the quality and foundation of love are directly influenced by personality development, their interaction is of high interest. The aim of the current study was to investigate the possible relationship between Strenberg’s “Triangular Love Scale” (1988) and the “Psychosocial Inventory of Ego Strengths” (Markstrom et al, 1997). Our sample consisted of 129 students (49 males and 80 females) from University of Tehran who took part in an online study. The findings indicated that two out of three love components (Intimacy and Commitment) were positively correlated with all the ego strengths (Hope, Will, Purpose, Competence, Loyalty, Love, Care, and Wisdom). Passion component of love was not related to any of ego strengths. Furthermore, there was no significant difference between males and females in love components, although the difference in “care” strength was observed with girls being higher. Regression analyses performed separately for males and females revealed that in males, will predicted passion, and intimacy was predicted by purpose, loyalty and love, respectively. Among females, only hope predicted the severity of intimacy. In conclusion, effective ego strengths for an intimate relationship varied among males and females, reflecting their crucial differences in love and attachment styles.
