Abstract

A method for the experimental determination of saturation characteristics in multilimb power transformers using DC excitation is described. Among the potential applications of the saturation curves obtained by measurements are diverse electromagnetic transient studies, stability analysis, and harmonic and power quality assessment in power systems.

This project defines the needs, uses, and future projects (as well as business cases and procurement) of a University Housing dashboard tool, utilized by the Red Brick Dormitories on the Cal Poly campus. This easily accessed tool provides simple information regarding energy trending data, allowing for all student residents no matter their academic discipline, to understand their energy trends and opportunities for reduction. With the Energy Dashboard in place, Cal Poly’s red brick dormitories experienced savings ranging from 10%-20% from the 2011-2012 school year baseline, by the end of the 2012-2013 academic year. With the help of the Dashboard, competitions awarded the most “green” dorm, encouraging environmental awareness and personal responsibility. Not only has Cal Poly reduced its energy bill, but also made strides in uniting to conserve the environment.

This article explores whether and to what extent individuals are willing to voluntarily pay a premium for products that provide public environmental benefits. In particular, we critically review and analyze the status and impacts of U.S. green power marketing to date. Green power marketing-the business of selling electricity products distinguished by their environmental attributes-seeks to develop a private market for renewable energy driven by consumer demand for green products. Debate has centered on the ability of such a market to provide a significant level of support for renewable energy sources. This paper examines experience to date with green power markets in the United States, providing an historical overview, reviewing product offerings, assessing customer response, and calculating overall support for renewable energy. While market research shows that a majority of the populace states a willingness to pay a premium for renewable energy, early experience with green power marketing shows that those attitudes have not yet translated into large-scale behavior change, tracking experience in other environmental product markets. While a niche market for green power does exist, the data presented in this paper indicate that the collective impact of customer-driven demand on renewable generation has been modest thus far. Several lessons on how to potentially improve the prospects of green power marketing are discussed.

A variety of models has been developed to represent transformers in switching surge studies. However, there is a paucity of data on the characteristics of large power transformers to provide parameters for utilization in the models. This paper describes a low power field method of saturating large transformers and plotting the instantaneous magnetization curve. Results on a 25 MVA unit allowed the accuracy of several equivalent circuits to be compared. Minor hysteresis loops were observed to obey simple relationships from which two magnetizing inductance models were developed

A method to determine the magnetizing characteristic of three-phase transformers is described. In the analysis, the measured currents and voltages generated during transformer switching are used. The magnetizing characteristic is calculated from the primary currents, rather than the current through the delta winding
