Modeling of flow through sudden contraction in a crude oil pipe line using finite element methods

In this work, the effect of sudden contraction in a pipe line has been investigated using finite element methods and the obtained results have been compared to literature. The results show that the length of upstream flow separation in contraction plane increases with Reynolds number of 104. But the length of upstream flow separation decreases for greater Reynolds number. The flow separation ... [Show full abstract] exists for all of Reynolds number. By increasing the Reynolds number, the length of upstream flow decreases. The flow separation is not exist in downstream at Reynolds number less than 300. The results show that by increasing X/D ,the dimensionless velocity increases in pipe center. Further grid refinement did not cause significant changes in the predictions and therefore these results can be considered to be grid independent.

Mid-infrared optical characterization of InGaAsP

We present a measurement of the refractive index of lattice-matched to InP outside of the range available in the literature. We have accurately determined the refractive index of lattice-matched to InP as a function of wavelength (, 2.12, and 3 μm) and arsenic molar fraction (, 0.7, and 0.72). Data is interpolated with a theoretical model and compared to the literature whenever possible. ... [Show full abstract] Agreement with currently available data is good. Uncertainties are estimated, the largest one being related to the sample composition. We also measure propagation losses dominated by scattering () in ridge waveguides, for the same range of compositions at wavelengths of 1.55 μm and 2.12 μm.

The first one is to bring into focus the central issues that during the centuries have shaped the debate on literary translation, with special regard to poetry translation. The second one is to discuss strategies and "modes" of poetry translation, and to test their validity by a contrastive comparison ... [Show full abstract] of existing translations. This dual purpose is mirrored in the structure of the dissertation, which is divided into two parts--translation theory and descriptive translation--corresponding to the classification put forward by James S Holmes. The first part presents a historical survey of the main contributions to translation theory--from the early meditations by Cicero to the modern attempts at systematization by Peter Newmark--and discusses the issue of translatability and untranslatability. The second part deals with the process of creation and re-creation of poetry. It first establishes its own field of investigation by trying to identify the main constituents of poetic language and the mechanics of poetic creation; then it analyzes the re-creative process, the role of the translator as re-creator and imitator, and the different strategies and modes of interpretation. The last part links theory to practice through the comparison of Leopardi's L'Infinito--a minutely engineered poem considered by many "untranslatable"--and several English translations of it published between 1887 and 1994. The dissertation concludes with a discussion of the role that these English translations might play in the receptor culture.

ON-X Bileaflet Valve in Aortic Position - Early Experience Shows an Improved Hemodynamic Profile

Despite considerable progress during the last decades, mechanical heart valves still have significant disadvantages in performance compared to native valves. To optimize the hemodynamic profile, a new mechanical bileaflet valve (ON-X) was developed and introduced in 1997. It was the aim of this study to assess the feasibility, safety, and the early postoperative hemodynamics with this new valve ... [Show full abstract] in vivo. We analyzed 19 patients (11 male, 8 female; 63.2 +/- 8.2 years; aortic stenosis: n = 13; aortic incompetence: n = 2; combined aortic lesion: n = 2), undergoing aortic valve replacement with this prosthesis (valve size 19 mm: n = 1; 21 mm: n = 6; 23 mm: n = 8; 25 mm: n = 4; additional CABG: n = 4). In addition to intraoperative pressure gradient measurements, echocardiography was performed early postoperatively and after 3 months, evaluating pressure loss, effective orifice area, and regression of left-ventricular hypertrophy. No major perioperative complications were observed. The echocardiographic evaluation demonstrated a significantly increased effective orifice area and lower transvalvular gradients in all valve sizes compared with literature values for the St. Jude Medical prosthesis. Effective regression of left-ventricular hypertrophy (-23.6%) was observed over the first three months. These preliminary data confirm the favorable hemodynamic characteristics of the ON-X valve as compared to standard bileaflet designs. Implantation was feasible and safe, and no major postoperative complications such as thrombembolic events were observed.

Improved syntheses of ethyl 3,3,3-trifluoropropionate and 3,3,3-trifluoropropionic acid

Ethyl 3,3,3-trifluoropropionate was synthesized by treatment of monoethylmalonate with sulfur tetrafluoride. 3,3,3-Trifluoropropionic acid was prepared by acid hydrolysis. The physical properties of these compounds are compared to the literature values.
