Introducing Resilient Dynamic Capabilities to Reduce the Negative Effects of Environmental Turbulence

However, it has not yet fully been explored how dynamic capabilities affect performance in turbulent environments. This paper extends the concept of dynamic capabilities by incorporating the idea of resilience. To that end, it presents a model of robust and versatile variants of dynamic capabilities. A simulation study investigates firm performance given different types of dynamic capabilities and varying degrees of environmental dynamism. The results confirm that non-resilient dynamic capabilities are efficient in stable and moderately dynamic environments. We find that resilient dynamic capabilities can reduce the negative effects of environmental turbulence on performance, especially when they are versatile.

The main contribution is a new way to rethink resilience, that is mathematically formal and easy to evaluate heuristically in real-world applications: ecosystem antifragility. An ecosystem is antifragile if it benefits from environmental variability. Antifragility therefore goes beyond robustness or resilience because while resilient/robust systems are merely perturbation-resistant, antifragile structures not only withstand stress but also benefit from it.

Furthermore, I argue that a resilient system is not merely robust. Robustness is a property of simple or complicated systems characterized by predictable behavior, enabling the system to bounce back to its normal state following a perturbation. Resilience, however, is an emergent property of complex adaptive systems. It is suggested that this distinction is important when designing and managing socio-technological and socio-economic systems with the ability to recover from sudden impact.

We apply the concept of antifragility to wireless communications where the system stressor is a jammer that intends to disrupt the underlying communications. Through a novel strategy, we exploit the communications jammer, providing an increase in communications capability such as bits per second. We show that an antifragile gain is possible under a wide variety of reactive-jamming scenarios and provide guidelines for realizing these gains by creating an antifragile waveform.

A scenario in this context is an account of a plausible future. Scenario planning consists of using a few contrasting scenarios to explore the uncertainty surrounding the future consequences of a decision. Ideally, scenarios should be constructed by a diverse group of people for a single, stated purpose. Scenario planning can incorporate a variety of quantitative and qualitative information in the decision-making process. Often, consideration of this diverse information in a systemic way leads to better decisions. Furthermore, the participation of a diverse group of people in a systemic process of collecting, discussing, and analyzing scenarios builds shared understanding. The robustness provided by the consideration of multiple possible futures has served several groups well; we present examples from business, government, and conservation planning that illustrate the value of scenario planning. For conservation, major benefits of using scenario planning are ( 1 ) increased understanding of key uncertainties, ( 2 ) incorporation of alternative perspectives into conservation planning, and ( 3 ) greater resilience of decisions to surprise.

Evolution of resilience in protein interactomes across the tree of life

Phenotype robustness to environmental fluctuations is a common biological phenomenon. Although most phenotypes are governed by multiple proteins that interact with each other, the basic principles of how such interactome networks respond to environmental unpredictability and change during evolution are largely unknown. Here we study interactomes of 1,840 species across the tree of life involving ... [Show full abstract] a total of 8,762,166 protein-protein interactions. Our study focuses on the resilience of interactomes to protein failures and finds that interactomes become more resilient during evolution, indicating that a species' position in the tree of life is predictive of how robust its interactome is to protein failures. In bacteria, we find that a more resilient interactome is in turn associated with the greater ability of the organism to survive in a more complex, variable and competitive environment. We find that at the protein family level, proteins exhibit a coordinated rewiring of interactions over time and that a resilient interactome arises through the gradual change of the network topology. Our findings have implications for understanding molecular network structure both in the context of evolution and environment.
