This paper examines the impact of changes in industry mix, changes in technology, differential plant growth, plant entry and plant exit on metropolitan labor productivity growth between 1963 and 1997. [Show full abstract] States. The most influential components of productivity growth are technological changes within incumbent plants and changes in industry mix. Significant differences in the relative contributions of these components of productivity change exist across metropolitan areas. Regional differences in rates of plant openings and plant closures also exert considerable impact on metropolitan productivity improvement.

Productivity growth in the commercial service sector

For over three decades, measured productivity growth in the commercial service sector has consistently lagged behind that of the goods-producing sector. At the same time, the service sector has greatly expanded its share of output and employment. Some commentators have suggested that this trend will reduce growth in total economy-wide productivity. In this article, the author reviews recent ... [Show full abstract] trends in productivity growth in services and the main factors affecting it. She concludes that services will likely contribute to increases in future productivity growth. There is a great diversity of experience within the service sector. While productivity is falling in some industries, factors such as technological change, deregulation, and increased competition have helped to increase it in others. Moreover, much of the growth in commercial service output is occurring in those industries with relatively high productivity growth. Difficulties in measuring output for some service activities may also be resulting in underestimation of output and productivity growth. To the extent that services are used as intermediate inputs in the production of goods, underestimating productivity growth in the service industry would cause an offsetting overestimation of productivity growth in goods-producing industries.

Skill-Biased Technological Change in Denmark: A Disaggregate Perspective

In this paper, we provide an industry-level analysis of skill-biased technological change (SBTC) in Denmark over the last two decades. The analysis shows that SBTC has varied considerably across industries, and traditionally large Danish industries have experienced relatively less SBTC. This may partly explain why wage inequality between skilled and less skilled has risen less in Denmark than in ... [Show full abstract] other countries. We also find that SBTC has been concentrated in already skill-intensive industries. This contains important information about future labour requirements, as the relative importance of these industries must be expected to grow, thereby reinforcing the shift in demand for skilled labour.

Some applications will require the technology to be dormant for years until commanded once to perform a single action. The commercial satellite industry was identified as an industry that is very successful in deploying highly complex technology and achieving high reliability in a commercial environment. An assessment of the practices of the satellite industry was performed and evaluated for application to the development and deployment of Intelligent Well technologies. The results of this assessment indicate the key ingredient making the commercial satellite industry a success is that the purchasers of commercial satellite equipment set very clear reliability performance and assessment requirements via the contracting process. This drives the system and sub-system suppliers to conduct product design and development in a very structured and disciplined manner. For the oil industry to fully realize high reliability of Intelligent Well technologies, the operators will have to adopt and develop new skills for:Setting reliability expectations.Communicating those expectations to the suppliers.Incorporating reliability specifications into contracts.Working with the suppliers to ensure compliance with the reliability requirements. This paper will identify and illustrate how these practices are employed by the space industry. Introduction The investment level required for deepwater developments are similar to commercial satellite projects. The high impact of failures in the deepwater environment justifies additional resources implemented to assure the technology performance. Highly reliable systems development not only requires sophisticated technical processes but also requires sophisticated relationships between customer and the supplier. A common response to discussions on reliability is a reference to Quality Plans such as ISO 9000. Reliability is related to quality but is primarily focused on the basis for the claims of the product performance. Quality is primarily focused on accurately and effectively producing a product from its stated design. This paper is focused on the aspects of delivering high reliability product design. Understanding What You Are Buying A key observation of the satellite industry is the in-depth knowledge that the customer has of the product that is being purchased. In addition, the customer also has skills in-house to understand the technology being purchased. This is in contrast to typical oil industry practices for technology purchases in which operators typically do not have in-depth knowledge of the Intelligent Well technologies being purchased and also do not have the in-house skills to effectively assess the technology. A common analogy is that the purchase of a reliable TV does not require knowledge of the internal workings of a TV.

This paper describes various Bellcore requirements for fiber optic interconnecting devices and exemplifies some of the criteria development processes and how the requirements have changed over the last decade.

We investigate the role that entrepreneurial flexibility vs. pre-entry experience plays in determining the post-entry performance of firms that enter a new market. We hypothesize that in markets characterized by intense technological change, the organizational flexibility possessed by entrepreneurial denovo entrants helps them overcome their initial experience based disadvantage as the industry ... [Show full abstract] evolves over time. Using a comprehensive database for the personal computer industry, we find support for dissipating effects of pre-entry experience over time. This indicates that over the industry life cycle, organizations that possess entrepreneurial flexibility have higher survival rates and market share than firms with prior experience. Consistent with the notion that denovo firms are better able to keep pace with technological change, we find that the denovo firms that enter later in the industry life cycle are able to overcome their initial disadvantage by introducing more new products than their experienced competitors.
