Industrial Design and Human Factors Contributions to the Design of IBM's PS/2

The contributions of industrial designers and human factors engineers to the development of the IBM Personal System/2 product line has yielded a system of products that exemplifies results which can be accomplished when the two disciplines work toward a common goal. The final system design was the result of concepts which were tested using various human factors validation methods which lead to design refinements, with the ultimate goal to fully accommodate the end user's needs. The IBM PS/2 product line was designed for an international market. Emphasis was placed on flexibility to allow the customer various system configurations and upgrades. The collaboration between the two complementary disciplines resulted in a superior product family with many desirable usability features.

Poor design of the human interface is a primary cause of human failure, whether it is the way information is presented, the layout of controls, the physical workspace, or aspects of the environmental design. This chapter provides an insight in to the different levels of complexity of the interactions people have within a work system, including automated systems which may or may not improve human and overall system performance. Human Factors Engineering or ?ergonomics? is the application of human factors knowledge to the design of systems and a human-centered design approach is advocated.

Thinking aloud: Reconciling theory and practice

Thinking-aloud protocols may be the most widely used method in usability testing, but the descriptions of this practice in the usability literature and the work habits of practitioners do not conform to the theoretical basis most often cited for it: K.A. Ericsson and H.A. Simon's (1984) seminal work. After reviewing Ericsson and Simon's theoretical basis for thinking aloud, we review the ways in ... [Show full abstract] which actual usability practice diverges from this model. We then explore the concept of speech genre as an alternative theoretical framework. We first consider uses of this new framework that are consistent with Ericsson and Simon's goal of eliciting a verbal report that is as undirected, undisturbed and constant as possible. We then go on to consider how the proposed new approach might handle problems that arise in usability testing that appear to require interventions not supported in the older model.

Gaze analysis in a remote collaborative setting

Understanding computer mediated interactions between humans is an interesting challenge for human factors psychology and a necessity for effective group support system design. We report on our experiences using a remote gaze tracker in a remote collaborative setting. After recording gaze tracking of the remote individual in a mixed presence group during an activity of negotiation, we report the ... [Show full abstract] data in context of the display's Areas of Interest (AOIs). This single user display, sectioned into three areas based on informative content, serves as the model for tracking with a remote gaze tracker. An analysis of fixation and dwell times indicate greatest engagement with a focused view of co-located participants which indicates preference over a wider vantage point of people and their surroundings. Methods and preliminary results are discussed.
