Authors:

Abstract

In recent years, indoor positioning has emerged as a critical function in many end-user applications; including military, civilian, disaster relief and peacekeeping missions. To cope with this surge of interest, much research effort has focused on meeting the needs of these applications and overcoming their shortcomings. Ultra WideBand (UWB) is an important technology in the field of indoor positioning and has shown great performance compared to others. In this work, we identify and analyze existing ultra wideband positioning technologies and present a detailed comparative survey. We also provide a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis, a method generally used in management science to evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats involved in a product or technology, to analyze the present state of UWB positioning technologies.

Indoor positioning systems (IPSs) locate objects in closed structures such as office buildings, hospitals, stores, factories, and warehouses, where Global Positioning System devices generally do not work. Most available systems apply wireless concepts, optical tracking, and/or ultrasound. This paper presents a standalone IPS using radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. The concept is based on an object carrying an RFID reader module, which reads low-cost passive tags installed next to the object path. A positioning system using a Kalman filter is proposed. The inputs of the proposed algorithm are the measurements of the backscattered signal power propagated from nearby RFID tags and a tag-path position database. The proposed algorithm first estimates the location of the reader, neglecting tag-reader angle-path loss. Based on the location estimate, an iterative procedure is implemented, targeting the estimation of the tag-reader angle-path loss, where the latter is iteratively compensated from the received signal strength information measurement. Experimental results are presented, illustrating the high performance of the proposed positioning system.

This paper describes IRIS-LPS (InfraRed Indoor Scout), an optical infrared local positioning system. The tracked objects carry active tags that emit infrared signals which are received by a stationary mounted stereo-camera. The system is based on cheap off-the-shelf components, is easy to deploy, and features a large range of coverage. It is capable of tracking a large number of tags without significant performance impact, since the sampling rate remains constant with an increasing number of tags. A test installation of the system has been evaluated in a lecture hall. The positioning system is utilized by our audio-centric user terminal called Talking Assistant. This and other application scenarios are described at the end.

In this paper, we propose a vision-based location positioning system using augmented reality technique for indoor navigation. The proposed system automatically recognizes a location from image sequences taken of indoor environments, and it realizes augmented reality by seamlessly overlaying the user's view with location information. To recognize a location, we pre-constructed an image database and location model, which consists of locations and paths between locations, of an indoor environment. Location is recognized by using prior knowledge about the layout of the indoor environment. The image sequence is obtained by a wearable mobile PC with camera, which transmits the images to remote PCs for processing. The remote PCs perform marker detection, image sequence matching, and location recognition. The remote PCs transmit the recognized location information to the wearable mobile PC. The system provides the ability to identify similar locations in the image database and display location-related information. Accurate and efficient location positioning is achieved by using several vision-based techniques. The proposed system was tested in an indoor environment and achieved an average location recognition success rate of 89%. The proposed system could be applied to various consumer applications including the door plate system, notice board system, shopping assistance system, and bus service route guide system, among others1.

In this paper, a new indoor positioning system based on incident angle measurement of infrared lights has been suggested. Though there have been various researches on indoor positioning methods using vision sensor or ultrasonic sensor, they have not only advantages, but also disadvantages. To minimize the disadvantages they have, this new method using incident angle of infrared light has been invented. In a new positioning system, there are three infrared emitters on fixed known positions. An incident angle sensor measures the angle differences between each two emitters. Measured angle differences determine a position. This method is available only inside the triangle which is composed of three emitters. Mathematical problems to determine the position with angle differences and position information of emitters has been solved. To solve the non-linear equations without prior position information, iterative linearization process has been used. Simulations and experiments have been implemented to show the performance of this new positioning system. The results of simulation were good. Since there existed problems of noise and signal conditioning, the experimented has been implemented in limited area. But the results were acceptable. This new positioning method can be applied to any indoor systems that need absolute position informations.

Ultrasonic location systems are a popular solution for the provision of fine-grained indoor positioning data. Applications include enhanced routing for wireless networks, computer-aided navigation, and location-sensitive device behavior. However, current ultrasonic location systems suffer from limitations due to their use of narrowband transducers, This paper investigates the use of broadband ultrasound for indoor positioning systems. Broadband ultrasonic transmitter and receiver units have been developed and characterized. The utilization of these units to construct two positioning systems with different architectures serves to highlight and affirm the concrete, practical benefits of broadband ultrasound for locating people and devices indoors.
