Over the last 30 years, the south-west of Germany has secured many attributions: a model country, a growth country, a science country and a country with a high quality of life. The rural area, which had to cope with an enormous structural change in the past 50 years and was almost exclusively agricultural in the 1950s, is now partly well-developed and has the important task of producing healthy and high-quality food using sustainable production methods. In addition, it has experienced functional extensions, including growth, innovation and recreational functions. Its importance for environmental and nature conservation is also recognized by all social groups. The article highlights the enourmous changes in the state of Baden and Wurttemberg from early 19th century where still 75% of the workforce lived on agricultural production to the present modern agriculture in the modern state of Baden-Wurttemberg which ensure food production, rural development and supports the protection of natural resources.
