Implementation of E-Learning in Adult Education: A roadmap

Authors:

Abstract

In the present era, adult education is growing by leaps and bounds. At the same time, the preferences of students in the field of education have drastically altered. Gone are the days, when classroom teaching was considered sufficient to educate the students. The present generation of students is technology savvy and expects teachers to impart quality education. E-learning has caused tremendous revolution in the field of adult education. Traditional classrooms are giving way to virtual classrooms. The students are empowered to learn at their pace as per their convenience. Therefore, e-learning system has been able to get wide adoption. However, there are certain security risks in the adoption of e-learning. In order to hedge such risks, metadata standards are being developed. Considering its impact, it seems that e-learning has become a way of life in classrooms and campus-based environments. Certain practical e-learning initiatives in the field of adult education have been launched in India and abroad to propagate the benefits of e-learning. However, administrators should be realistic while propagating e-learning. In order that the benefits of e-learning should reach its intended beneficiaries, a clear vision should be drafted. This process of vision setting should address the diversity among the students and be flexible in nature. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that this vision should not be imposed on the various stakeholders from above but should be attained by the process of democratic decentralization.

Student dropout and its economic and social consequences are significant issues in developing countries. Students who drop out experience reduced employment prospects and encounter social stigma. While early dropout prediction can assist in mitigating the consequences, it remains a considerable challenge. The present research employed a data mining approach to predict dropout of public health master-level students in Saudi Arabia, a developing nation that has invested considerable resources to promote higher education. The research model focused on three fundamental determinants of students’ dropout: individual, institutional, and academic. The study analysis on a dataset of 150 students revealed that all three determinants predicted student dropout. The results indicated that students with low academic performance who received an academic warning were likelier to drop out. Freshmen with poor academic achievement were particularly at risk of dropping out of college. Students between 31 and 36 years old who attended technical courses as a subject specialization could also dropout. The research contributes to the literature by suggesting that universities should consider these individual, institutional, and academic determinants to develop their dropout prevention strategies. This study has ramifications for university administrators in developing nations, such as Saudi Arabia, who can establish dropout prevention programs based on the determinants revealed in this study.

University students’ dropout is a complex issue with life and career ramifications, especially in least developed countries. Ethiopia, a country with one of the least developed economies, has made considerable efforts to strengthen its higher education; yet university student attrition remains a major concern. In this study, we utilized the data mining methodology to reveal the important factors that impact dropout among the Ethiopian university students. The current research results indicate that personal, institutional, and academic factors affect university student dropout. In Ethiopia, low-performing rural female students are more likely to drop out than male students, according to the findings of this study. In general, rural low- achieving students have a greater likelihood of dropping out of university. This is likely to occur during the students' first semester of study, especially if they have a poor attendance rate. This research contributes to the body of knowledge by indicating that university remedial programs may be successful in reducing the incidents of students’ dropout. The current research has implications for policymakers in the least developed nations, such as Ethiopia, to construct dropout intervention programs based on the factors identified in this research.
... Low power distance indicates that the populace anticipates an equal distribution of power, whereas high power distance indicates that the populace accepts orders from superiors (Hofstede, 2022b;Singh & Alshammari, 2021). This indicates that in Australia, learner-centered instruction is favored, whereas teacher-centered instruction is favored in Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia (Singh et al., 2013;Singh & Chand, 2012;Singh & Agarwal, 2011). This indicates that some organizational factors would have a greater influence on student dropout in Australia, while others would have a greater influence in Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia. ...

Student dropout is a complex issue with significant repercussions for educational institutions and nations. Using the Hofstede national culture model, this study assessed the various social, psychological, economic, and organizational factors that influence student dropout. Since developed, developing, and least-developed countries score differently on the Hofstede model, Australia, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia were selected as representative nations. The evaluation indicates that social factors may have a low, moderate, and high influence on student dropout rates in Australia, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia, respectively. Different organizational factors may influence student dropout rates in Australia, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia. In Australia and Ethiopia, psychological factors may play a larger role in student dropout than in Saudi Arabia. In Australia and Ethiopia, economic factors may play a larger role in determining student attrition than in Saudi Arabia. In Australia, the dropout rate among female students may not be a major concern, while it could be a more prominent concern in Ethiopia and Saudi Arabia. However, in Saudi Arabia, such concerns are mitigated by the substantial financial assistance provided by the government to students pursuing an education.

Sustainable development goals (SDGs) are intended to be attained as a balanced whole. However, significant interactions (the synergies and trade-offs) between the SDGs have caused the need, especially in developing economies, to identify and pursue them in line with their particular developmental needs. The research intends to empirically investigate the relationship between selected UN SDGs and GDP growth rate as a proxy for economic well-being in Saudi Arabia. We also investigate the role of education and training in achieving SDGs in accordance with the Saudi Vision 2030, which places emphasis on the knowledge economy. This research employs multiple regression analysis to explore the relationship between the SDG variables and the GDP. The results show that education and training, gender equity/women's empowerment, greenhouse gas emissions, and decent employment are positively and significantly related to the GDP growth, whereas poverty, hunger , and health appear to be negatively related. The research indicates that education and training can promote economic, socioeconomic, and health goals without compromising environmental goals. Consequently, the Saudi government should invest more in education and training to maximize synergies and minimize tradeoffs between the SDGs. This will help to promote sustainable employment generation, build human capital, improve socioeconomic empowerment through technology , and boost economic growth.

Non-profit organizations (NPOs) are essential to the economic planning process in Saudi Arabia. This study examines the Human Resource (HR) practices of Saudi Arabian non-profit organizations. It is based on a primary survey administered to 201 employees of the four types of existing non-profit organizations (NPOs) in Saudi Arabia (Qur'an Memorization Society, Dawah Society, Specialized Society, and Development Committee) using a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire was intended for the eight existing HR practices: work design, HR planning, polarization, selection, training and development, motivation, performance evaluation, and job satisfaction. The ANOVA and Pearson correlation tests were performed on the eight segments of the HR instruments to investigate the perspectives of HR professionals in the NPO sector. The findings of the study indicate that the HR practices are moderated by the gender, age, education, and years of experience of the employees. The work design has the highest awareness among the employees, with a mean of 4.05, while job satisfaction has the lowest awareness, with a mean of 3.18 on a 5-point scale. A correlation between HR practices shows that work design improves performance evaluation, polarization affects HR planning, and training and development influence performance evaluation.

Digital technology-enabled personalized and adaptive learning has emerged as a critical tool for educational institutions to satisfy the evolving needs of their students, particularly in a dynamic environment like COVID-19. Such learning provides students the necessary guidance and flexibility required in a learner-centered environment, thus improving student performance. The current study leverages the TOE model to develop an institutional-level DT-PAL student learning framework. The framework suggests that digital technology-enabled personalized and adaptive learning can provide the students with the necessary personalization, flexibility, and adaptability to meet their learning needs and enhance their learning performance. The DT-PAL framework also suggests that COVID-19 and national culture complement the relationship between digital technology-enabled personalized and adaptive learning and student performance. The analysis of Saudi national culture on Hofstede cultural dimensions suggests that digital technology-enabled personalized and adaptive learning can foster student creativity, improve teaching-learning methodologies, bridge the gender divide, increase professionalism, improve evaluation methods, and streamline curriculum. The knowledge generated by this study can help Saudi Arabia to meet its digital transformation goals under National Transformation Program. Other countries can use the knowledge generated by this study to transform their education sector and improve the learning performance of their students.
