The Leader as Chief Truth Officer: The Ethical Responsibility of “Managing the Truth” in Organizations

Article available at: http://rdcu.be/vUrn. Our aim is to analyze the position of the leader in relation to the ethical dimension of truth-telling within the organization under his/her control. Based on Michel Foucault’s study of truth-telling, we demonstrate that the role of the leader toward the corporation and the imperative of organizational performance place the leader in an ambiguous position: he/she is obliged to take the lead in “telling the truth” internally and externally, but also to bear the consequences of this “truth-telling” for the organization and for himself/herself. In this process of construction and implementing the truth, the leader is organizer and figurehead of the corporation’s truth-telling practices: determining the frontiers between truth that can be said and that which should remain hidden, both inside and outside the corporation; establishing a dialogue based on truth (i.e., an authentic, sincere relationship with all partners); guaranteeing that the rules of truth-telling are respected; and offering a truth which is compatible with the firm’s economic and ethical interest. Invested with the authority—the office—of managing truth within the corporation, the leader can be considered to be the “Chief Truth Officer.” From this perspective, we demonstrate that this role requires specific skills, like courage and practical wisdom.

Since the non-western perspectives of ethics have not been well explored in the literature, this paper addresses this concern by explaining ethics from an ancient Indian concept of dharma. Though we consider various normative aspects of dharma from multiple conversations available in the Indian scriptures, we consider a precise narrative of dharma from Nāradaparivrājaka Upaniṣad as the fundamental reference to define dharma as a multidimensional construct. Further, we adopt a dharmic approach to highlight the significance of ethics in leadership which may significantly contribute to assuring sustainable business practices. The paper would bring in certain theoretical implications as follows. First, elucidating certain dimensions of dharma would help broaden the normative domain of ethics literature. Second, given the sustainability-engrained nature of Vedic philosophy, such a dharmic approach toward ethical leadership would further widen the construct with a novel theoretical viewpoint. Third, the acknowledgment of a specific leadership act to be ethical or unethical becomes more objective in this context with the provision of a definitional framework of dharma, narrated in this paper.

Constructive Deviant Behavior (CDB) raises an ethical dilemma that poses a significant challenge within the realm of business ethics. This ethical dilemma is the extent to which individuals should be allowed, or even encouraged, to challenge established norms in the name of organizational and stakeholder well-being before compromising ethical principles. Despite the growing body of research in this field, which highlights the emergence of a new domain, there remains a lack of a comprehensive framework to define and understand CDB within organizational contexts. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to fill this gap by conducting a thorough analysis of the literature using the PRISMA methodology. In order to systematically review previous research, a sample of relevant articles was selected and analyzed in depth with the aim of defining a comprehensive framework clarifying the nature, forms, and dimensions of CDB. In addition, the relationships between CDB and its antecedents and outcomes were investigated from a business ethics perspective. Within this context, the study proposes a unified CDB framework while acknowledging and integrating the diverse perspectives that have emerged in past studies. Furthermore, this research reveals that individual and organizational characteristics are the predominant antecedents of CDB. Finally, as an emerging domain of increasing practical relevance within business ethics, this subject offers fertile avenues for future research, as delineated by the findings of this study.

This paper brings into focus the concept of organizational secrecy by senior managers in the context of a major strategic change program. Underpinned by legitimation theory and utilizing a narrative methodology and a longitudinal investigation, we draw upon data from 52 interviews with 13 senior managers conducted at 3 months intervals over the course of 12 months. Our findings reveal that senior managers utilized seven discursive legitimation strategies to justify keeping secret that the organization intended to downsize, and they used a different mix of legitimation strategies as the change process evolved. We labeled these discursive legitimation strategies as (1) Naturalization, (2) Rationalization, (3) Moralization, (4) Authorization, (5) Proceduralization, (6) Valorization, and (7) Demonization. Theoretically we bring a temporal perspective to understanding organizational secrecy and the central role that discursive legitimation plays. We show that the use of these discursive legitimation strategies are anchored to meta-narratives describing work practices and values associated with the organization’s culture. And that managers use discursive legitimation to manage the ethical implications of secrecy.

The primary objective of this study is to show an innovative experience of teaching business ethics that promotes leadership in the Business School of a university in western Mexico. Business ethics students apply a virtue approach to promote their leadership skills. For this, students require general ethics knowledge, as a starting point, to make an in-depth critical analysis of the reality they face in their professional practice. A test of ethical knowledge is applied. The results show that there is a need for minimum knowledge of general ethics to promote leadership in the context of professional ethics undertaken from a virtue approach. In regards to leadership, it can be concluded that ethics is a pivotal factor as the leader’s actions profoundly affect her/his followers and since teaching virtues is primarily conducted by setting examples.

Le consentement libre et éclairé en médecine comme manifestation de l’adhésion à un acte thérapeutique est au cœur de la relation patient-médecin. Malgré son importance, ce consentement est souvent fragilisé avec l’essor de la médecine de précision du fait de la difficulté à construire une relation patient-médecin dans ce nouveau contexte. Cet article est l’occasion de rappeler les origines du consentement et quelques-uns de ses enjeux en explorant l’évolution du modèle paternaliste au modèle autonomiste. Aujourd’hui, les enjeux du consentement liés à technicisation de la médecine se trouvent à la jonction entre des exigences institutionnelles et le besoin d’autonomie d’un patient vulnérable. Le médecin doit alors reconnaître et faire reconnaître les capacités d’autogestion du patient dans sa maladie. Un nouveau mode de dialogue entre le patient et le médecin permettrait cette reconnaissance tout en laissant la liberté au patient de ne pas consentir à un acte thérapeutique ou à une expérimentation médicale à tout moment dans sa trajectoire de soins.

This article presents the results of a journey into the work of French philosopher Simone Weil, Oppression and liberty and The Need for roots, in order to identify the conditions and limits to the implementation of freedom of expression. This research project aims at identifying the ethical foundations of freedom of expression in a contemporary context where globalization, the media and social networks facilitate a fast dissemination of numerous individual and collective expressions, while the law cannot discern when to privilege freedom of expression over other human rights. The result of our analysis of Weil notions of “need of the soul” and “obligations towards human being” enable to understand why freedom of expression is individual and not collective and under which conditions it should be protected: as an essential need of our intelligence, rooted in every human being, that must be respected absolutely at an individual level. This principle also makes it possible to legitimize the limitation of certain collective expressions conveyed by organizations, in their external and internal communication, and the authorization of the individual voice of certain stakeholders when they speak out in favor of justice and truth.

Les crises migratoires provoquent des débats politiques houleux sur la manière d’éviter leur répétition. Si certaines voix privilégient le renforcement de la lutte contre la migration irrégulière pour préserver la souveraineté des États, d’autres plaident au contraire pour l’ouverture des frontières nationales au nom d’un droit universel à la libre circulation. Bien qu’elles concentrent l’attention des partis politiques, des médias et des universitaires, ces positions ne sont pas les seules présentes dans le débat. La gestion migratoire représente une troisième option souvent méconnue qui préconise l’ouverture régulée des frontières et une gouvernance migratoire dépolitisée et technocratique pour perpétuer les flux de la mondialisation. Or, en l’absence d’un régime international qui imposerait la gestion migratoire, des institutions doivent la formuler, la diffuser, et la mettre en œuvre pour qu’elle transforme la gouvernance migratoire. C’est pourquoi cet ouvrage examine les trois moments de l’émergence, de la sélection et du maintien de la gestion migratoire au sein de l’Organisation internationale pour les migrations (OIM). Fort de l’analyse de réunions et de documents de l’OIM entre le début des années 2000 et 2018, l’ouvrage illustre comment cette organisation développa la gestion migratoire pour réduire la complexité des migrations, critiquer et corriger l’exercice de la souveraineté des États, et protéger la mondialisation des crises migratoires et humanitaires. L’ouvrage nuance les conceptions qui réduisent l’OIM au rôle de sous-traitant de la lutte contre la migration irrégulière privilégiée par les États du Nord. En s’appuyant sur la gestion migratoire, l’OIM renforça son autorité et son autonomie vis-à-vis des États, étendit ses activités au champ humanitaire, rejoignit l’ONU en tant qu’organisation apparentée en 2016, et façonna l’adoption du Pacte mondial pour les migrations en 2018. Ne s’arrêtant pas au constat de la prééminence de la souveraineté des États au sein de la gouvernance migratoire, l’ouvrage démontre l’importance de considérer les manières dont les organisations internationales problématisent les migrations, conçoivent des interventions technocratiques, et poursuivent des objectifs sociaux « désirables ».

In this chapter, we reviewed the final 39-item factor for possible underlying values that would lead managers/leaders to behave in ways measured by the final 39-item factor. Table 7.1 shows the 39 items of the final factor sorted by the phase 2 chapter principle and includes the values codes from the content analysis. Factor loadings for the 39 items ranged from 0.76 to 0.97. For the final 12-item optimized scale, factor loadings ranged from—0.86 to 0.92. We presented the possibility that the 39 items align with the concept of Agapao love and fit the definition of (Rokeach in Understanding Human Values. Simon & Schuster, 2008) instrumental values. We values-coded the phase 1 principles and produced 38 values that align with the concept of Agape love and fit the definition of (Rokeach in Understanding Human Values. Simon & Schuster, 2008) terminal values. We developed definitions for the 38 values. Then, we developed scale-development items for the 38 values that ask participants to state to what extent they ‘sense’ each of the 38 values, which will produce a measure of the organization’s climate. Chapter 8 presents the scale-development study. We conducted in-depth interviews with leaders who self-selected terminal values that they believed they had and explained the origin of their values, which included family, academic preparation, church, and the workplace.

The paper examines the contribution of the French philosopher Michel Foucault to the subject of ethics in organizations. The paper combines an analysis of Foucault’s work on discipline and control, with an examination of his later work on the ethical subject and technologies of the self. Our paper argues that the work of the later Foucault provides an important contribution to business ethics theory, practice and pedagogy. We discuss how it offers an alternative avenue to traditional normative ethical theory that both converges and diverges with other extant alternatives. By situating ethics as practices of the self, and by demonstrating the conditions under which freedom in organizations can be exercised, Foucault’s ethics attempt to connect an understanding and critique of power with a personal project of self. He therefore provides a theory of subjectivity that potentially informs a reshaping of contemporary virtue ethics theory, value-based management, and business ethics teaching.

In this paper, we develop an approach to the study of whistleblowing as a critical practice that is involved in the contestation of truth and power in the workplace. We situate our analysis in the context of practice-based thinking and specify the social practice of whistleblowing with reference to Michel Foucault’s concept of ‘parrhesia’ (frank speech). We then introduce the case of Guido Strack, a former European Union official who worked as section leader at the Office des Publications Officielles des Communautés Européenne from 1995 to 2002. Strack spoke out against malpractice in the EU in 2001 and officially reported alleged financial misconduct in 2002. In our analysis, we focus on the interplay between and effects of different modes of truth-telling in the context of this specific organization – a context marked by the uneasy coexistence of different normative and discursive frames. We argue that the parrhesiastic modality of truth-telling threatens the established ‘working solutions’ that reconcile the tensions inherent in the regime of practices and thus introduces a ‘critical opening’ that harbours the potential for both personal and organizational transformation. We conclude by highlighting the potential of a nuanced understanding of parrhesia for studying ‘critical practices’ more generally.
