Objective: We aim to identify the most advanced SMEs in terms of their internationalisation shortly after the end of the economic crisis. For this purpose we look at the changes in the intensity of internationalisation in terms of its breadth and depth. Research Design & Methods: The study is based on a complementary data set derived from secondary (AMADEUS database) and primary sources of information (computer assisted telephone interviews with top managers) for 553 micro, small and medium firms located in Poland. We conduct a cluster analysis to identify different internationalization profiles of SMEs for the years 2010-2013. Findings: In the year of the global economic crisis ambitious investors on average had at their disposal substantially better competitive potential than the remaining two groups. Ambitious exporters were better equipped than cautious internationalizers only in terms of human resources, intangible resources and quality control. Implications & Recommendations: Policy support should be particularly oriented towards supplying information about foreign markets and fostering firms in an optimal allocation of their resources. Contribution & Value Added: The study suggests that the strategy of diversifying international markets during the economic crisis and recovery can be a means of improving performance and reducing excessive dependence on fluctuations in key markets.

El propósito de este artículo es analizar cómo se relacionan las variables de la administración de la relación con los clientes, el desarrollo de nuevos productos y el conocimiento de mercadotecnia, en la industria electrónica en la ciudad de Guadalajara, Jalisco, México. También descubrir el impacto que estos factores tienen en la creación de nuevos productos, así como la implementación de información externa e interna en creaciones futuras. El análisis se llevó a cabo por medio de una investigación hecha a 25 empresas de la industria; la encuesta se realizó entre sus directivos. Además, las repercusiones de este estudio son los conocimientos en la práctica sobre la estructura de mk, las decisiones de desarrollo de productos con un enfoque de crm, así como las condiciones organizacionales que participan en el proceso.

Using organizational flexibility as a research lens, we investigate how private firms, especially SMEs, in China cope with the 2008 financial crisis. Testing data from a large sample of private firms (N=3,459) by difference-indifferences analysis, we find that firms with industrial diversification, geographic expansion and political connections perform better during the crisis than those without.

In this chapter you will learn which strategies and measures SMes take to survive crisis. Cases from a sample of 25 companies located in the surrounding area of Argentina’s third biggest city, Rosario, are presented. These SMEs have survived all major crises in the past 15 years and thus, have demonstrated their ability to cope with economic turbulences successfully. In the current economic crisis, many European SMEs are struggling to survive and it seems appropriate that some of these strategies could be applied in the European context. This chapter forms a “trilogy” with the previous chapter on Argentinan economic development and the following chapter which explores the role of owner/mangers in turbulent environments.

Fashion business is sensitive to economic situations, and supplier integration (SI) and green sustainability programs (GSP) are two timely issues in the fashion industry. Undoubtedly, both SI and GSP require significant resources and continuous commitment which affect cash flows and resource allocation of the fashion enterprises. How SI and GSP affect the financial performance of the fashion enterprises under the global financial crisis is hence an important issue. Motivated by the above relationship and based on publicly available data, this study aims to explore empirically (i) the impact of SI and GSP adoption on the financial performance of the fashion enterprises under financial tsunami, (ii) the relationship between SI and GSP adoption of the fashion enterprises, and (iii) the moderating effect brought by fashion content on the above relationships. The findings reveal that (i) both SI and GSP adoption can significantly improve the financial performance of the fashion enterprises, (ii) both SI and GSP adoption help to mitigate the adverse effect of financial tsunami on the fashion enterprise's financial performance; and (iii) fashion content has a moderating effect for fashion enterprises which sell fashionable items (i.e., “fashionable group”) to increase profits through a higher level of SI or executing GSP to act against financial tsunami. Managerial implications and insights are discussed.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide a better understanding of the determinants of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) financing constraints and their impacts on investments in innovation. To explicate these factors, the authors use a general definition of innovation, distinguishing between product and process innovations, and highlight the role played by banking relationships. Design/methodology/approach On the basis of a literature review covering works specializing in innovation, financing constraints, and SME characteristics, a quantitative study is carried out in Spain, using a sample composed by 267 Spanish SMEs. Information was gathered by applying surveys addressed to the firm managers. Findings The findings reveal that financing constraints hinder innovation among Spanish SMEs functioning in hostile environments, though long-term banking relationships can moderate these financing constraints. The longer the duration of a firm’s banking relationship, the fewer financing constraints it faces, because the relationship significantly reduces information asymmetry. Practical implications To reduce financing constraints on their innovation, SMEs should establish long relationships and low debt concentration with their main bank. The more banks a firm works with, the greater its financing constraints. The findings have managerial implications, not just for firms but also for government policymakers and providers of consulting services. Originality/value This paper provides an in-depth analysis of the factors that affect innovation, along with insights into which financing constraints limit innovation during a severe recession.
