Group communication has been studied by different researchers, standardisation bodies and others. The results were of two kinds: group communication tools and communication services. The suitability of the service is, however, only being proved for simple forms of communication, such as e-mail. This paper will address a very important and more difficult aspect of group communication, namely coordination, and investigate the implications for the Group Communication Service. It will also present an alternative, based on the X.500 Directory Service, for the Group Communication Service, which avoids a shortcoming of the Group Communication Service, that existing group communication tools would become isolated.

[Show full abstract] is that it allows easy combination of them with other communications services such as voice, video, gaming, whiteboarding to provide a total communication experience to end users. Presence is defined as the willingness and ability of a user to communicate with other users on the network and the presence model defines three different entities, the presentity, the watcher, and the presence service. The presence model can be implemented by using the SIP event notification framework together with a newly defined presence event package where the resulting architecture is composed of three entities, the presence user agent (PUA), the presence agent (PA), and the watcher application. Instant messaging is a type of online communication based on the exchange of messages, and to achieve interoperability between instant messaging services based on different protocols, a common profile for instant messaging (CPIM) has been defined in [RFC 3860] and an associated instant messages format in [RFC 3862]. All CPIM-compliant implementations must adhere to these specifications.
