ABSTRACT The level of students’ academic performance in Biology, Physics and Chemistry subjects was found to be very poor. The declining performance of Science Secondary School Students in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State is somewhat disappointing. The purpose of this paper is to identify “Students Academic Performance in Physics, Biology and Chemistry (A Case Study of Some Selected Secondary Schools in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State).” The design that was employed in this study was a survey design. The area of study of this research comprises of one local government area in Kano State, which is Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State. The population of the study comprises of sixteen (16) Secondary Schools with the total population of 6,335 students with 70 teachers respectively in Fagge Local Government of Kano State. Therefore, in accordance to Krejcie and Morgan Table the population sample of 361 should be collected for the total of 6,335 which tallies with the total population of Science Students in four schools. A structured questionnaire titled: “The Performance of Students in Biology, Chemistry and Physics in Some Selected Secondary Schools in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State” was developed by the researchers to collect relevant data. The data collected with the questionnaire were from some selected Secondary Schools in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State. i.e. Government Boys Secondary School Mamman Vice Adamu, Maryam Abacha government girls secondary school and Government Boys secondary school Kwakwachi.

... Despite its importance to the developmental aspiration of every society, student performance continues to decline both in internal and external examination (Aniaku, 2012). In line with the above, Hellmann et al. (2014) and Samuel (2016) outlined some factors leading to the poor performance of students in science subjects (Biology, Chemistry & Physics) with great emphasis on Biology to include; peer group influence, teacher teaching methods, motivation, unavailability of instructional materials and teacher's inability to use innovative teaching strategies. The study sought to determine teachers' challenges in integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching and learning of Biology in secondary schools. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. Two research questions and one null hypothesis guided the study. A reliability coefficient of 0.72 was obtained for the instrument using Cronbach's Alpha. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions. The findings of the study revealed a number of challenges hindering ICT integration into classroom teaching and learning. Example, insufficient time allocated for the teaching and learning of Biology, lack of computer laboratory and computers for the teacher, low funding of education and over bulky Biology curriculum among others. Based on the findings, recommendation was made and conclusion reached.

Physics and Mathematics are two deeply interlinked domains of Science. Mathematics is considered as the language in which the Physics theories are built by employing mathematical symbols and operations to make equations and representations in the world of Physics completely meaningful. In spite of being the backbone of Physics, the use of Mathematics principles and operations in Physics is the root cause of most of the issues and hassles aroused among students who learn Physics. This is an investigation on the substandard performance in mathematical problem solving in Physics among higher secondary school students by looking into the responses of teachers and students. The responses obtained from 21 higher secondary Physics teachers through questionnaire were studied using percentage analysis and the four major categories of ‘Difficulties in Mathematical Problem Solving in Physics’ faced by students viz., ‘Creating or Identifying the Formula’, ‘Extracting Information from Diagrams’, ‘Using Physics Concepts to Create Schematic Diagrams’ and ‘Application of Mathematics’ to solve Physics problems. were identified, The investigators used ‘Test on Mathematical Problem Solving in Physics’ with 40 multiple choice questions on select basic topics from ‘Motion’, which was informed by the Physics teachers to be one of the strenuous concepts for students while solving problems. The extent of each category of difficulty in the respective topics based on the students’ responses in the test was studied to rank them. This study also highlights some suggestions for improving the teaching and learning of mathematical problems in Physics at higher secondary level.

Urine contains micro pollutants such as synthetic hormones, pharmaceuticals and their metabolites that is mainly excreted via urine and maybe harmful to the ecosystems and human health. It becomes imperative to investigate microorganisms in urine contaminated environments within Federal University Wukari, Taraba State, Nigeria to determine whether the contaminated environment harbor pathogenic microorganisms and thus, pose risk to health. Six soil samples were collected and analyzed using serial dilution and pour plating techniques. Nutrient Agar was used for bacteria isolation and subculture while Sabouraud Dextrose Agar was used for fungi isolation. The result revealed the isolation of ten (10) bacterial and seven (7) fungal isolates. The Bacterial isolates include; Bacillus species (40%), Corynebacterium species (16%), Staphylococcus species (11.3%), Enterobacter cloacae (7.34%), Micrococci (6%), Klebsiella liquefasciens (2.67%), Flavobacterium rigense (3.33%), Acinetobacter anitratus (6.67%), Streptococcus species (3.33) and Lactobacillus species (3.33%). The predominant bacteria were Bacilli, and the least were Klebsiella liquefasciens, Flavobacterium rigense, Streptococcus species and Lactobacillus species. Fungal isolates were Aspergillus species (45%), Trichoderma viride (17.86%), Rhizopus nigricans (12.86%), Gliocladium deliquescens (10%), Penicillium species (6.43%), Fusarium oxysporium (2.86%) and Beauveria bassiana (5%). Predominant fungi genus in soils from these sites was Aspergillus and the least was Fusarium oxysporium. It is extremely difcult to create an environment completely hostile to all microorganisms in order to prevent infection. Nevertheless, it is important to eliminate as much of the pathogenic organisms (bacteria and fungi) as possible by using careful cleaning procedures.

The study examined the perception of students and teachers on the causes of poor academic performance among secondary school students in Ogun State, Nigeria. Subjects for the study were one hundred and thirty-five (135) students and fifty (50) teachers randomly drawn from five secondary schools in Odogbolu Local Government Area of Ogun State. Questionnaire was used to collect relevant data for the study. Percentages and chi-square were used to analyse the research questions. Responses of teachers showed that teachers' qualification and students' environment do not influence students' poor performance but teachers' methods of teaching influence poor academic performance. Students' response on the other hand showed that while teachers' qualification and students' environment influence students' poor performance, teachers' method of teaching and learning materials do not. The implications of these findings for secondary school guidance counselors interested in counseling adolescents for good academic performance were discussed.

Personality is the man. The successful living of an individual, as a man, depends to a large extent on the academic achievement of that individual, as a student. This article attempts to find out personality type, academic achievement of secondary school students and relationship between them by selecting a sample of 300 secondary school students from Tirunelveli. Survey method was used. The collected data, using Multidimensional Personality Inventory and quarterly examination marks were analyzed statistically and the results show that the personality type of secondary students is ambient, their academic achievement is average and there exists relationship between personality type and academic achievement of secondary school students with reference to some factors and there is no relationship with regard to some other variables, suggesting that there could be some other factors that influence their academic achievement.

In this action research primary data have been used to study the academic performance of students currently enrolled in first year Physics department. Investigations revealed that a substantial number of students in Jimma University are enrolled in a course or study programme in which they have little or no interest. Questionnaires were used to ascertain preliminary claims "that lack of interest in a course of study is a fundamental factor responsible for poor academic performance". Data collated and analysed shows that amongst the students currently enrolled in first year Physics department, only 34% selected the Faculty of Education (in which Physics department belongs) after the "grade 12" National Examination; only 27% indicated that their current department is the best choice for them; 31% chose physics as first choice during application for admission; only 17% shall be willing to choose Physics again if they are all given fresh opportunities to make fresh selection. The overall degree of excellence of the class investigated is at a level of "average performance"; and just about half (50.6%) of the class, indicated high interest in their present course of study. A concise intervention plan to enhance the academic performance of students have been developed, taking into account specific problems to be addressed; basically in four major areas, namely: lack of interest, poor problem solving skills, poor understanding of the concept of physics, and lack of skill in practical work respectively. Appropriate recommendations on steps to be taken by stake holders of educational service providers have also been included. The major limiting factor to this project is time constraints, and problems of logistics beyond our control, which have disabled the implementation of the intervention action plan.

Several approaches to the use and/or role of the laboratory in science teaching are presented, including historical and research perspectives, opinion statements, a review of current research, and suggestions for future research. Concluding remarks, speculations, and recommendations also are made by the author about research related to the role of the science laboratory. (CS)

Ethiopia is embarked on a higher education expansion and reform programme of impressive dimensions. Expansion will create new universities, establish three sys-tem support agencies, mount new courses, and triple enrolments. Reforms intro-duce increased institutional autonomy, curriculum revisions, new funding arrange-ments and student contributions by means of a graduate tax. This article analyses current higher education reform efforts in Ethiopia. It begins by sketching the so-cial context in which higher education is situated and describing the country's higher education system. An assessment of tertiary education financing follows. Management capacities and efficiency in the use of these resources are then dis-cussed, noting the particular challenges posed by HIV/AIDS. Educational quality and relevance are subsequently addressed. Analysis points out potential weaknesses in the reform programme but concludes that enrolment expansion targets are likely to be met. However, the dynamics of expansion may well generate difficulties in maintaining educational quality.
