Ecosystem services (ES) concept has been popular among researchers in the last several years. In this paper, we assessed the development and trends in Polish ES research in the period 2010-2016 using the content analysis of 84 scientific papers – the outcome of ECOSERV Symposia. We analysed such attributes as the type, dimension and scale of the study, ecosystems and ES investigated, the system used to name or classify ES, data used, as well as the considered policy and business questions. In addition, we compared the Polish studies with the European research in the database developed in the ESMERALDA project. The conducted study provides insight into the major achievements as well as challenges that the Polish ES research community will have to face. The findings may serve a discussion on how future directions of the research can be shaped in order to mainstream ES into environmental management.

The uptake of the Ecosystem Services (ES) Approach in Poland with emphasis on the drivers stimulating the research and activity of the authorities, as well as the perception of this approach by the practitioners, are presented in this paper. The study focused on the identification of the stimulus for the activities concerning mapping and assessment of ecosystems and their services (MAES). The survey carried out among practitioners allowed to define the main challenges for ES implementation. Two pairs of dichotomic drivers of the MAES process in Poland have been identified: scientific and administrative, as well as international and national. With regard to science, the most important drivers were found to be large international research projects. The inclusion of the ES approach in strategic documents of the European Union was of mobilising importance for the administration. Currently, there is no wider interest in the ES approach at a regional and local level. The results of the survey showed that there is a deficit in knowledge on the practical way of using this approach. In general, it may be said that there is a large potential for the development of ES applications in Poland. Activating it depends on political decisions.

In the European Union countries, including Poland, work is being conducted on the implementation of the ecosystem services (ES) approach in policy and decision-making. This process is relatively advanced at the level of individual member states; however, it still constitutes a big challenge on the sub-national level. The determination of reasons for such a status quo and searching for solutions were main subjects of one of the workshops at the ECOSERV 2016 symposium that was held in Poznań in 2016. 30 persons representing the most important Polish authorities and institutions dealing with environmental management participated in the workshop. The analysis performed made it possible to identify a set of conditions, which, according to the experts, are the most important for the development of the ES approach in the regional scale.

The study undertakes the problem of quantification of ecosystem services (ES) at a local scale. The basic area of research was the Krajenka Municipality. The research concerned two types of provisioning services (production of wood biomass in forests and crops in agroecosystems), and two types included in the group of cultural services connected with relaxation and recreation in open areas and experiencing the beauty of nature (aesthetic impressions). The main aim of the study was to quantify the considered ES at a local level. The following research methods were used: cartographic, geoinformation (GIS), questionnaire surveys, market price (using one of the InVEST models), contingent valuation, travel costs, quantitative and qualitative point valuation and statistics. The following results were obtained: 1) identification of spatial differentiation of the supply of ES in the research area, 2) assessment of the influence of selected features and preferences of inhabitants on the results of quantification of ES, 3) assessment of the influence of the degree of spatial data generalization on the quantification results, 4) development of quantification procedures of selected ES, taking into account the assessment of influence of the input data generalization on the results obtained, 5) testing the usefulness of selected maps for spatial analysis of differentiation of the supply of ES. The practical effect of the study are premises which may support decision makers in the process of shaping the local environmental policy, also in spatial planning.
