Awareness and use of Web 2.0 tools

The study aims to investigate the level of awareness and use of Web 2.0 tools by Library and Information Science (LIS) students at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The study adopted a descriptive survey method and questionnaire was used to collect data from 220 respondents. The results show that the LIS students of UNN are quite familiar with some Web 2.0 tools such as Social networking sites, ... [Show full abstract] Instant Messaging, blogs and Wikis, while, they are not familiar with tools such as RSS feeds, Podcasts, and social bookmarks. The study revealed that the most frequently used Web 2.0 tools are Facebook, followed by YouTube and Wikis. The UNN LIS students indicated communicating with friends/family, exchanging opinions/news for their personal life, and acquaintances/meet people as the top reasons for joining social networks. The study also revealed that UNN students learnt the use of Web 2.0 tools through friends, followed by through self-practice, While only a few students indicated learning the skills through the library school. It is recommended that LIS schools incorporate units about Web 2.0 tools into their curricula to prepare future information professionals by developing their skills for future challenges of using such tools.

Web 2.0 features in university library web sites

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore recent trends in the application of Web 2.0 and Library 2.0 features as exemplified through university library web sites around the world. Design/methodology/approach – The top 100 universities from the ranked list of 200 provided on the Times Higher Education web site were considered for collection of data and from this list a selection was made ... [Show full abstract] of 57 of these universities. This selection was based on whether the site was in English and whether it had at least one Web 2.0 feature. For each of these universities their web sites were visited and data on their Web 2.0 features (such as Blogs, RSS, Instant Messaging, Wikis and the like) were collected and analyzed. Findings – Results reveal that 37 university libraries use RSS feeds for dissemination of library news, events and announcements and 15 university libraries provide blog space for users. Whereas wiki is the least applied Web 2.0 technology, with only one university using it, Instant Messaging is another most widely applied feature with 37 libraries already providing reference service through it. Podcast (used in three libraries) and Vidcast (used in six libraries) are yet to become popular facilities to be offered in university library web sites. Research limitations/implications – The study is based on the university ranking for 2007, as the World Top 200 Universities 2008 was not published until October 2008 when this article was being finalized. However, this does not affect the outcome of the Web 2.0 features being utilized by the universities. Originality/value – Most of the earlier studies on the subject deal with Web 2.0 tools and how they could be used in the library context. The present paper, however, provides concrete evidence of the application of Web 2.0 in university libraries. As such it should prove of interest to all types of libraries, even though its context is university libraries.

RSS feeds will be forming part of our teaching to researchers and provision of instant messaging information and advice may grow in the future. Podcasting, flicker and YouTube give us new formats for providing tours and enhancing our instructional material. Blogs can be used to discuss the use of resources, and wikis to build up resource lists. They can both be important sources for current information and students need to understand their strengths and weaknesses. Librarians have an important opportunity to use Web 2.0 tools to broaden and enhance their Information Literacy message.

Web 2.0 is a term used to describe recent developments on the World Wide Web. The term is often used to describe the increased use of the web for user-generated content, collaboration, and social networking. However, Web 2.0 is a weakly defined concept, and it is unclear exactly what kind of technologies it covers. The objective of the paper is to develop a typology that can be used to categorize ... [Show full abstract] Web 2.0 technologies. Further, the paper will discuss which of these technologies are unique to Web 2.0. Often, Web 2.0 is described by way of different kinds of software; for instance, blogs, wikis, podcasts, RSS, and social networking sites. The problem with this type of description is that it fails to distinguish between different types or categories of technologies. As an alternative, the typology developed in the paper distinguishes between technologies on basis of, how - and in which contexts - they are used. In a given use context, it is not the technological characteristics themselves that are interesting. Rather, it is the function of the technology in a given learner empowered use context, which calls for specific characteristics that appear significant in the coupling of action to process. The typology suggested by this paper relates to four functions or use contexts, which are believed to be central to the potentials of Web 2.0: dialoging, networking and awareness-making, creating and sharing. Based on the typology, the paper identifies unique potentials of Web 2.0 in relation to design of a learning environment: 1) organizing communicative processes and 2) organizing resources. Organizing communicative processes is supported by Web 2.0's ability to provide a range of communicative tools that can be organized flexibly by students. Web 2.0 provides opportunities for communities and groups to organize their own communicative processes. Further, Web 2.0 supports organization of resources by empowering students to create, construct, manage and share content themselves. However, the main potential lies within collaborative creation and sharing in networks. Potentially, networking tools such as weblogs and social networking sites can empower students to move beyond their communities and groups by participating in broader networks with other students and other groups.

OPAC 2.0, Mashups, RSS, Social Bookmarking & Tagging, Social Networking Services, Vodcast and Blog are the most widely applied technology and YouTube, Google Docs, Instant Messaging, Wikis are the least used technology amongst respondent libraries.

[Show full abstract] applications as blogs, wikis, podcasts, RSS feeds and discussion forums either alone or integrated into a course management system (Moodle) to create blended learning environments in their classrooms. The authors present data from the ABEL program's research report, and describe how secondary school teachers have used Web 2.0 tools and applications to meet their curriculum outcomes, and engage students in learning. The paper provides examples of how Web 2.0 and social networking tools have had a positive impact on ESL literacy, shaped student social attitudes and challenged stereotypes, redefined the roles that ABEL teachers assume vis-à-vis classroom practice, and raised new pedagogical issues about literacy and assessment.

Status of Library 2.0 Model in Cape Town Public Libraries

[Show full abstract] purpose of this study was to investigate the implementation of Library 2.0 in the libraries of the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality (hereafter City of Cape Town) and the challenges they encountered in using Library 2.0 technologies to deliver services. The website of the City of Cape Town Library and Information Services Department was visited to explore the implementation and usage of Web 2.0 tools, including blogs, really simple syndication (RSS), wikis, social networking, and social bookmarking. In addition, data were obtained from an interview conducted with the manager at the said department in charge of technical services, which included the implementation of new technologies. It was found that City of Cape Town libraries were slow in adopting Library 2.0 technologies in their services—there was no evidence on the website of the use of popular Web 2.0 tools such as blogs, wikis, video- and photo-sharing/-streaming, RSS, social bookmarking, and mash-ups. The research shed some light on the Web 2.0 tools used by public libraries other than those in Cape Town and it also highlighted how they were used and what their benefits were. More importantly, the research demonstrated the need for public libraries to embed Web 2.0 tools in their services and to keep abreast with and embrace emerging technologies.

These tools are very popular among students for a variety of reasons. One reason is that Web 2.0 tools are free to use and easily accessible. Since they are web based, students and teachers are no longer limited to collaborating within the walls of the classroom. This case study forms part of doctoral research investigating how e-learning is developing at one university in Saudi Arabia.
