Over the last decade, design for behaviour change has become increasingly recognised as a strategy for enabling social change. Despite this, we are far from understanding its implementation, especially through the private and public sectors. This study has surveyed private and public sector stakeholders with regard to their current knowledge of, and approach to, design for behaviour change. The aim was to identify the challenges for professional stakeholders in understanding, accessing and implementing design for behaviour change. Underpinned by a literature review of design for behaviour change theories and approaches, an online survey and two focus groups with private and public sector stakeholders were conducted with particular focus on small and medium size enterprises (SMEs). The results identified that there is a significant disconnect between available theoretical knowledge of design for behaviour change and its practical implementation. Reasons for this include a lack of awareness and common language, of evidence based examples, and of evaluation methods and inter-sector collaborations. In response, a set of recommendations has been developed to propose ways forward for the wider understanding and application of design for behaviour change.

In an ideal world, occupants have an understanding of how building systems work and are motivated to use the systems as they were designed to be. There is considerable evidence, however, that occupants do not understand the principles of how buildings function and that they use the systems non-optimally. The purpose of the paper is to quantify the effect of occupant behaviour on energy consumption and show how it is affected by design strategies. Numerical simulations of an office were performed with the dynamic thermal simulation software TRNSYS. Three types of behaviour (‘careless’, ‘normal’, and ‘conscious’) and two types of design (‘ordinary’ and ‘robust’) were considered. The results show that the effect of occupant behaviour on energy consumption is greatly diminished with robust design solutions, solutions that make buildings less sensitive to occupant behaviour. The careless user consumes 75–79 % less energy if the robust design solutions are applied rather than the ordinary design solutions. It is argued that a realistic view of occupant behaviour is advantageous in the creation of energy-efficient buildings (that is, leaving less need to learn how buildings work, to be motivated to save energy, or to perform specific energy-saving actions). However, the possibility of personal control should not be eliminated.

Design for Sustainable Behaviour [DfSB] is an emerging research area concerned with the application of design strategies to influence consumer behaviour during the use phase of a product towards more sustainable action. Current DfSB research has primarily focussed on strategy definition and selection within a design process, with surprisingly little research into understanding the actual impact of the behaviour changing interventions yielded through such investigation. Furthermore, the suitability of evaluation methods and the transferability of evaluation results have seldom been discussed. This paper reports on the findings of a three-year research project within the UK social housing sector, research that aimed to reduce energy consumption within the home through behaviour changing intervention, whilst maintaining occupants comfort levels. A behaviour changing prototype was developed through a user-centred design process, resulting in a physical manifestation of one specific DfSB strategy – feedback; a user agentive performance indicator. In order to evaluate this feedback prototype, an evaluation framework was developed, targeted at the three fundamental questions that arise when faced with the evaluation of a DfSB strategy led intervention: (1) Does the produced design solution function for the specified context? (2) Has the user’s behaviour changed as a consequence of the design intervention? (3) Is the change in user’s behaviour sustainable? Applying these core questions in practice resulted in an evaluation of unparalleled depth. The function and usability of the design were evaluated with users and against extensive feedback design criteria. In addition, behavioural changes in the intentions and habitual processes of the user and their facilitating conditions as well as sustainability changes in energy consumption and comfort were evaluated against pre-intervention state benchmarks. Fitting within the remit of sustainability, the associated ethical dimensions and impact of this DfSB research were also evaluated. Using data collection methods that included focus groups and user trials, the results of this research project illustrate the success of using this tripartite questioning strategy towards the evaluation of a DfSB strategy led intervention, building a vital knowledge platform for the formalisation of transferable DfSB research and evaluation methods.

Occupant behaviour represents one of the greatest sources of uncertainty in building energy use. Energy use uncertainty is an undesirable trait with regards to sizing equipment and estimating energy use and cost. This paper presents one approach to help address this uncertainty: use of passive building measures to minimize the occurrence of discomfort so that occupants do not have to adapt as frequently in potentially energy-intensive ways. A robust design method is proposed whereby occupant behaviour models are embedded in building performance simulation to test different building designs for their probabilistic energy use and adaptive actions. To demonstrate the method, the daylighting and solar shading domain is explored. The results indicate one possible approach to reducing the impact of occupant behaviour in buildings. However, the study also shows the need for more occupant monitoring and modelling research as well as more empirical evidence to validate robust design strategies.

During planning and design stages of energy efficient houses investor and designer deal with requirement to ensure very low energy consumption in operational stage of building life cycle. Any deviation appeared after building commissioning will result non-compliance with regulatory requirements. Currently, the energy simulations of the residential building do not provide the approach, which would help comprehensively evaluate differences of occupants’ characteristics (age, behaviour, etc.), neither in energy performance certification methodologies nor in energy simulation software. The objective of study is to perform complex analysis of the effect of domestic occupancy profiles on the energy performance of energy efficient house and assess applicability of default DesignBuilder occupancy profiles at local conditions. Results show that the influence of the profile with 4 occupants (OP2) on overall primary energy demand for different cases is never exceeding 5% compared to default DesignBuilder profiles. The influence of households with 2 occupants (OP3, OP4) on overall primary energy demand varies from 14% to 21% compared to default profiles. The simulation results revealed that the use of different occupancy profiles correlates with the total energy performance of the building. Incorporation of occupancy information in energy simulations will improve the accuracy of the energy performance assessment.

[Please email me - dan@danlockton.co.uk - for a PDF, until the open access embargo has expired] Products and services explicitly intended to influence users' behaviour are increasingly being proposed to reduce environmental impact and for other areas of social benefit. Designing such interventions often involves adopting and adapting principles from other contexts where behaviour change has been studied. The 'design pattern' form, used in software engineering and HCI, and originally developed in architecture, offers benefits for this transposition process. This article introduces the Design with Intent toolkit, an idea generation method using a design pattern form to help designers address sustainable behaviour problems. The article also reports on exploratory workshops in which participants used the toolkit to generate concepts for redesigning everyday products – kettles, curtains, printers and bathroom sinks/taps – to reduce the environmental impact of use. The concepts are discussed, along with observations of how the toolkit was used by participants, suggesting usability improvements to incorporate in future versions.

Previous studies indicate electricity consumption is increasing in new and green buildings highlighting the importance of investigating parameters affecting that increase. The majority of previous studies also focused on studying commercial or residential buildings emphasizing the need to study energy consumption in other building types. This study analyzed historical energy consumption data in a representative sample of thirty schools in Manitoba, Canada. It showed that the decrease in gas consumption for heating in new schools was counteracted by a statistically significant increase in their electricity consumption. Three cases study schools were selected for further analysis of their electricity consumption. Within each school, one classroom, the gymnasium, as well as spaces with significant community use, were sub-metered to collect real-time electricity consumption data. Results indicated total electricity consumption increased in the newest school, although sub-metered spaces in older schools consumed more electricity. Variations in electricity consumption between sub-metered spaces were attributed to occupant behaviour. The study is the first to provide an in-depth investigation of electricity consumption in Canadian school buildings and consider the potential effect of typically overlooked parameters such as occupant behaviour on their overall energy consumption.

Although sustainable design has become one of the major concerns in the interior design industry, the frequency of making such sustainable choices in real practice is still limited. Given that little research has yet focused on interior designers' choice of sustainable material, this study aimed to identify factors affecting interior designers' sustainable material choices focusing on sustainable flooring materials for residential use. On the basis of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) as a theoretical framework, we developed hypotheses to test relationships (1) between three determinants (attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control) and behavioral intention and (2) between two behavioral beliefs (environmental outcome and health outcome) and attitude. This study used quantitative methodologies through an Internet survey with a sample selected from American Society of Interior Designers practicing residential design. A total of 225 final surveys were utilized for further analysis. Findings revealed that all three determinants (attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control) were positively associated with behavioral intention to choose sustainable flooring materials. Attitude toward adopting sustainable flooring materials were significantly related to environmental beliefs but not to health beliefs. Our findings imply that the TPB framework can provide valuable insights for developing more effective and comprehensive strategies and strengthening the interior design curriculum to promote interior designers' sustainable decision-making in material choices in actual real-life design practice.
