... We personally consider the application of the AI tool to be unsuitable for conducting a qualitative content analysis, as well as for other qualitative data analysis methods that go beyond a rough thematic assignment and we see our suspicions confirmed at the moment by initial study results, which point to errors and limitations (Mayring, 2025). Of the various process models described by Mayring (2010aMayring ( , 2010bMayring ( , 2022a) the procedure of inductive category formation was used in order to approach the qualitative data with as much openness as possible. The clear meaning component was defined as the coding unit, the minimum size of a text element assigned to a category. ...
... So, in some cases, the categories formed were based on the concepts used in this model, which were supplemented by further superordinate categories. Inter-and intracoder reliability is regarded as quality criteria for the approach of qualitative content analysis (Mayring, 2010a(Mayring, , 2010b(Mayring, , 2022a. In the case of our research study, a second review of the interview material was carried out by the first coder to verify the results. ...

In this paper, we aim to address the major motivational factors of geography students in general and explore the extent to which these factors were important in working in a community-based research service-learning course. We designed a qualitative interview study as accompanying research to a study project in the bachelor's degree programme at the Ruhr University Bochum. Participation after the end of the course was voluntary; 13 course participants agreed to take part. One area of the interview guideline focussed specifically on motivational aspects. We examined the following research questions: RQ 1 What form does motivation take among participants? What are key factors that drive them in general? RQ 2 What role does motivation play in the work of the study project? The interviews were fully transcribed, and the qualitative data was pseudonymised and analysed by qualitative content analysis using the inductive category formation method. In response to the question regarding different forms of motivation, the following main categories could be identified: "relationship-related motivation", "performance-related motivation", "innovation-related motivation" and "personality-related motivation". The highest code frequency is in the main category of "performance-related motivation" which shows the particular importance of things like setting a goal or achieving your own success through your own effort for the students. Followed by "relationship-related motivation", the second most important. For the work in the study project, the motivation factors with a performance reference are precisely those that are relevant. Relationship-related motivational factors, however, played no role in working in the study project course.

In the dynamic landscape of university-industry collaborations (UIC), effective knowledge management is essential for innovation and the success of joint projects. Knowledge is one of the most valuable resources in the modern economy in the digital age of big data. Whereas digital collaboration platforms and artificial intelligence open up new possibilities for accessing and managing substantial knowledge, the potential of students’ (research) projects often remains unexplored. After their completion, usually at the end of the semester, these projects typically lose relevance and receive no further attention, even though they can provide valuable insights and innovations for the industry. At the same time, innovation ideas in companies are often not realized due to a lack of employees and time. Against this background, the AI-supported platform IdeaLize was developed to increase the interdisciplinary promotion of innovation as well as the exchange of knowledge and ideas between different institutions. The platform enables (research) projects and ideas to be published as well as suitable partners and their skills to be connected using an LLM-based matching algorithm. Integrated conversational AI also simplifies platform use. Despite these advantages, innovative knowledge management platforms remain underutilized in UICs. It is therefore necessary to understand for what purposes and with what motivation companies would use such platforms and what specific requirements they have. At the same time, it should be examined whether the university environment considers these requirements to be useful and worthy of support by subsequently validating the companies’ statements with university employees. In this study, we are therefore conducting a requirements analysis to identify the specific needs and expectations of companies with regard to IdeaLize. The content of this requirements analysis will then be evaluated afterwards with university employees. The aim is to work out functional and interactive requirements as well as critical success factors from the company’s perspective in order to derive recommendations for optimizing the user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design of platforms like IdeaLize. Methodologically, we follow the design science research approach according to Peffers et al. (2007). We perform a structured literature analysis on the state of the art of current knowledge exchange technologies according to Fettke (2006). Furthermore, we collect qualitative data for the requirements analysis through semi-structured expert interviews according to Bogner et al. (2014), which are analyzed using qualitative content analysis according to Mayring (2010). Our work contributes to closing the gap in knowledge management due to the insufficient use of digital platforms by providing targeted UX/UI optimizations for innovative project platforms, such as IdeaLize, and thus promoting the sustainable use of digital platforms in the knowledge management of UICs.

The ongoing development of extended reality (XR) technologies and the growing popularity of the esports industry suggest a future integration of XR in esports. However, research on the integration of the technologies in esport is sparse. Thus, the aim of this study is to investigate the opportunities and challenges of XR technologies in esports based on an explorative approach, relying on qualitative research methods and interviews with experts from the esports industry. The results show that XR technologies allow to significantly improve the spectator and player experience as well as processes in the event planning. In order to fully exploit this potential, it is crucial (1) to optimize the XR experience through the development of new, competitive XR games, (2) provide access to advanced hardware for an XR esports community to unfold, and (3) to establish XR collaboration formats and expertise in the esports industry. Furthermore, extensive research efforts are required to validate the promised advantages which are synthesized in suggestions for future research avenues.

Policy incoherence is an omnipresent challenge in public administration. Focusing on the joint implementation of the European Water Framework Directive and the Habitats Directive, we analyze how administrative fragmentation hampers river restoration projects at the sub-national level in Germany. By shifting the analytical focus to institutional and administrative factors, we reveal barriers at institutional, processual and individual levels. We find that the failure of river restoration projects stems not only from practical hurdles, such as lack of resources, information, or manpower, but also from more fundamental flaws in the administrative arrangements. Based on a multi-stakeholder consultation, we argue that both bottom-up and top-down approaches can support better coordination and a local mandate for joint implementation. In particular, state-level planning can help reduce local coordination costs in the short term. The analysis highlights the critical role of individual actors and leadership, reframing and cross-sectoral coordination for policy integration.
... For the analysis of the central aspects (challenges and development phases of start-ups) in this paper, a combination of basic literature analysis and a quantitative and standardized survey is utilized to define these variables. For the categorization and clustering of challenges from theoretical literature and practice-oriented studies, the deductive qualitative content analysis method proposed by Mayring (2010) is chosen. This method defines a new category system from existing analyses and theories, serving as a basis for further empirical research (see Chapter 2.3). ...

Research on collective climate action has been increasing in the past years. Yet, as scholars base their ideas on previous research and discussions in the scientific community, research may pass by the most pressing challenges that people working for socio-ecological change currently experience. To address this problem, we conducted 22 semi-structured qualitative interviews with participants from Europe and beyond to gain a better understanding of the psychological challenges and questions within socio-ecological movements. Inductive content analysis revealed eight key questions: How can movements and their members, (1) handle specific emotions, (2) become resilient, (3) deal with structural barriers, (4) create a (shared) identity, (5) work together constructively, (6) motivate others and themselves, (7) strengthen efficacy perceptions, and (8) how does societal change work? While a few of the raised themes have already received some attention in environmental psychology, most questions have not been sufficiently addressed. We therefore present a transdisciplinary research agenda for environmental psychology.

The present study investigates the influence of peer coaching on the depth of reflection on the content of digital games in geography education. The results show that the combination of a reflection diary and reflection coaching in the debriefing session significantly increases the depth of reflection at different levels. In particular, students were able to formulate more precise and critical statements at the level of comparison between the game world and reality, as well as at the level of self-reflection. Working in tandem and targeted questions from the trainers proved to be key success factors in promoting depth of reflection. The study shows the importance of combining written and oral reflection after using digital games and provides impetus for integrating digital games and reflection methods into the classroom.
... This was followed by using the qualitative data analysis method called "inductive qualitative content analysis" (Mayring, 2022) to find out which factors emerged as central in relation to EE in the sample obtained. Since inductive content analysis allows a systematic investigation that reduces complexity but generates a broad understanding of the phenomena referred to Mayring (2010), p. 65 it was the appropriate methodological approach for this research. For the content analysis, the MAXQDA 24 software was used, which allows thematic data analysis (Kuckartz and Rädiker, 2023). ...

Introduction In European countries, the emphasis placed on Extended Education (EE) differs not only in practice but also in policies and literature. In fact, there are still no standardized concepts or definitions of this specific educational area. Methods The aim of this study is to contribute to a transnational understanding of EE by inductive content analysis of essential documents from five different countries. The results of this study will facilitate a better understanding of shared factors which can be used to improve student access, success and retention in education, generate valuable guidelines for effective leadership and highlight the potentials of public governance for social innovation. As part of the Erasmus+ project “EKCO” (Extended Education Facilitating Key Competences through Cooperative Learning), a research team consisting of local experts in the field of EE from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland and Austria was asked to provide a selection of local literature on EE that they considered particularly relevant. A total of 19 documents were submitted from the five countries. In the present study, the expert sampling was subjected to an inductive content analysis using MAXQDA software to identify the salient points that emerged from the sampling. Results The results indicate that five main categories can be identified in the EE literature offered, namely: (1). Factors influencing EE, (2). Institutions and structure, (3). Pedagogical requirements, (4). Content of EE and (5). Factors influenced by EE. Discussion The analysis of the data shows that, despite national differences, there are common intentions, processes and structures that are productive for the development of key competences and future skills. Moreover, the interplay of these factors should be considered when discussing EE. The article discusses how national EE policies can learn from the diversity of their structures, processes and intentions.

This study examines how organizational decisions affect conflicts over Muslim accommodation (burkini permissions and separate women’s hours) in German swimming pools. We compare pools in similar demographic areas, representing four models of Muslim accommodation. We find that conflict dynamics and organizational management strategies differ across the cases: (1) The multicultural pool (burkini allowed, separate women’s hours offered) faces disputes over special rights claims by different groups and concerns about segregation. The organizational response involves façade-building and the allocation of additional resources. (2) The universalist pool (burkini allowed, no separate hours) has the lowest level of conflict, downplays cultural differences, and ensures that the same rules apply to all users. (3) The assimilationist pool (no burkini, no separate women’s hours) experiences conflicts over sharing limited resources with those perceived as different and adopts a laissez-faire response where the majority prevails. (4) The segregationist pool (no burkini but separate women’s hours) experiences open conflict between the majority and minority, with organizational responses focused on disciplining and controlling Muslim users.

As the capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) expand, more researchers are studying their adoption in newsrooms. However, much of the research focus remains broad and does not address the specific technical needs of investigative journalists. Therefore, this paper presents several applied use cases where automation and AI intersect with investigative journalism. We conducted a within-subjects user study with eight investigative journalists. In interviews, we elicited practical use cases using a speculative design approach by having journalists react to a prototype of a system that combines LLMs and Programming-by-Demonstration (PbD) to simplify data collection on numerous websites. Based on user reports, we classified the journalistic processes into data collecting and reporting. Participants indicated they utilize automation to handle repetitive tasks like content monitoring, web scraping, summarization, and preliminary data exploration. Following these insights, we provide guidelines on how investigative journalism can benefit from AI and automation.

This study is aimed at identifying the social issues, needs and requirements of Arabic-speaking Muslim women in Germany and recognizing existing gaps in social counselling. From this, suggestions for improving the counselling services are to be developed and the awareness of both social workers and German society of the problems of this target group is to be raised. This results in several research questions: Which individual social issues and challenges are significant, where are the specific needs and requirements for social support and counselling and where are there gaps, which German-language brochures, which are also available in Arabic, are available, and who is addressed in terms of content? To obtain answers, the target group is first interviewed qualitatively, while the second research phase involves a qualitative document analysis of information materials. This qualitative study has shown that social counselling is no longer available when moving from shared accommodation to one's own home, that the target group has little or no networking outside the circle of family and friends, suffers increasingly from (every day) racism and discrimination from which it feels insufficiently politically protected, and that there is a gap between support services and support needs, which cannot be closed due to the various socialization processes in the country of origin or host country and a lack of experience and search knowledge. Furthermore, there is a connection gap between support services and needs which cannot be closed due to the various socialization processes in the country of origin or host country and a lack of experience and search knowledge, as a result of which long-term social integration suffers and there is a risk of structural disadvantage, which is promoted by language and comprehension barriers in combination with the high professionalization, quality and organization of social work in communal structures. To counteract this, it is recommended that walking structures be established in the form of outreach social counselling in the neighborhood.

This article in the Zeitschrift für Psychodrama und Soziometrie discusses the resilience factors that can be deliberately promoted within a child psychodrama therapy group. A study is presented in which a child psychodrama therapy group was documented through video recordings over a period of six months and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The results of this study indicate that the children’s psychodrama psychotherapy group directly promotes the six resilience factors outlined by Fröhlich-Gildhoff und Rönnau-Böse (2019): self-awareness, self-regulation, self-efficacy, social competence, adaptive coping skills, and problem-solving ability.

The service industry is now characterised by the use of artificial intelligence (AI). AI solutions can improve various services—not only as part of online services, but also offline as part of physical interaction. For example, AI can be used to enhance the personal interaction between customers and advisors in traditional bricks-and-mortar travel agencies. However, this requires an appropriate work design and the willingness of both parties to use it. In this article, we use a case study to investigate how customers assess the service quality of travel advice in different AI application scenarios. To this end, we described four AI functions of a possible future travel counter, which are intended to support the advisor in his or her work and to change the interaction between advisor and customer in different ways. We then asked travellers interested in a bricks-and-mortar travel agency how they would rate the quality of service they would receive at this future travel counter. Based on the results of this survey, 42 textual responses are qualitatively analysed as a sub-sample of a more comprehensive survey with regard to assessments of various dimensions of perceived service quality. The results make it clear that personal interaction is the most important unique feature of offline travel advice, which is valued by customers and continues to be desired and necessary. It is therefore crucial that travel advisors are not replaced by an AI solution, but rather supported in their work in order to improve the framework for interpersonal interaction in terms of service quality. Practical Relevance: The results of the survey can help to develop AI solutions in the context of work, and more specifically travel advice, in a way that best suits the needs of the people involved.

Peer-feedback can be an effective method to support learning. However, students often require instructional support to provide and process peer-feedback effectively. Previous research used various types of instructional support to improve the quality of peer-feedback processes and outcomes. Yet, a comprehensive overview over their effects is missing. Therefore, this meta-analysis (based on N = 32 studies with N = 3806 learners) investigates the effects of different kinds of instructional support (feedback provision vs. feedback reception; content-specific vs. generic) on peer-feedback processes (formulating high-quality feedback messages, or effectively reflecting on the feedback received) and outcomes (subject-matter-related knowledge). Overall, peer-feedback with vs. without instructional support had a substantial positive effect (g = 0.47). Furthermore, we found a positive effect of feedback provision support on the quality of feedback provision (g = 0.72) and the quality of feedback reception (g = 0.69) but not on subject-matter-related knowledge. For feedback reception support, we found no effects on peer-feedback processes and outcomes at all. During feedback provision, content-specific support positively influenced the quality of feedback provision (g = 0.75) but not subject-matter-related knowledge, while generic support exerts a positive impact on the quality of feedback provision (g = 0.70) and subject-matter-related knowledge (g = 0.55). During feedback reception, we again found no significant effects of content-related support and generic support at all. The lack of effects for feedback reception support may be related to the limited number of studies on feedback reception in general. Finally, concrete implications and suggestions for future research are provided.

The messenger Telegram has gained importance for the mediated constitution of counterpublics in German-speaking countries since 2020. However, most research on Telegram focuses on the content shared and the networks that have developed on the platform. Meanwhile, knowledge about the users of counterpublic Telegram channels and groups and their processes of appropriating the messenger is very limited. Based on 14 in-depth interviews with users, this article explores how individuals connect with like-minded people on Telegram, how they process the information they receive there and why they are attracted to the medium in general. We group them in our analysis according to the meaning they ascribe to the Telegram community, their media repertoires, and how they negotiate contradictions between counterpublic and mainstream information, developing a typology of four types: (1) topic-oriented users, (2) confident researchers, (3) libertarian activists and (4) alienated users.

Using a relational leadership lens, this study aims to gain a deeper understanding of empathic conversations with a focus on leadership ethics. It adopts an entitative perspective in relational leadership and examines leadership conversations as a two-way influence relationship, highlighting their interdependencies and collective role in the co-construction of meaning. Data from facial expression software and perception surveys are analyzed. The results of this study reveal the influence of gendered leadership on emotions, emotional bonding moments triggered by humor, and cultural dynamics in leadership conversations. Leaders’ feeling-based questions and participants’ willingness to share their emotions, coupled with emotion synchronization, create a constructive space where both feel invited, cared for, and valued. The study shows that emotional bonds foster the expression of generosity, care, and responsibility, enhancing satisfaction for both leaders and participants. Overall, this study enriches relational leadership theory and practice by underscoring the connection between empathy and leadership ethics.

Background Children of parents with depression have an increased risk of mental illness themselves and there is an urgent need to implement effective prevention programmes for this population. "Growing Up Healthy and Happy" (“GuG-Auf-Online") is an online family- and group-based cognitive-behavioural preventive programme with a strong evidence base. The aim of the current study was to understand what factors might hamper parents with depression from participating in the programme. Methods An online cross-sectional survey was conducted in Germany with 274 parents who fulfilled the inclusion criteria for the programme (parental history of depression and a child aged eight to 17 years with no mental illness). The survey included several a priori-defined barriers (e.g. online format, feelings of shame) which parents rated in terms of (a) whether the barrier was relevant to them and if so, (b) how much it held them back from participating. Open-ended questions identified additional barriers. In addition to qualitative content analysis according to Mayring (2008), Pearson correlations were calculated to determine whether the current severity of parents’ symptoms were associated with their responses. Results The following aspects emerged as relevant barriers: (a) shame regarding one's depression, (b) overburden and (c) avoidance (not wanting to be reminded of depression). There was no evidence that the online setting was a significant barrier. Most of the correlations between the current severity of parent’s symptoms and their responses were statistically significant (p < .0037). Conclusions The main barriers to participation in prevention related to individual characteristics/ emotional experiences rather than structural issues. Addressing these barriers in the advertisement of future programmes could improve uptake.

Burnout is one of the most consequential forms of low well-being among entrepreneurs. Those who experience symptoms of burnout are more likely to curb growth ambitions, make mistakes, and eventually quit the venture altogether. Founders’ burnout therefore creates negative ripple effects for themselves, their teams, their investors, and their customers and beneficiaries. These consequences are even more dire in the case of social entrepreneurs: their beneficiaries are often socially vulnerable groups who are not served by other sectors of society. Yet, the prevalence and the drivers of burnout among social entrepreneurs are poorly understood in research. In this chapter, we present insights from two international studies: a large quantitative survey of social entrepreneurs in the Impact Hub network (n = 1024) and a qualitative study of young social entrepreneurs at Social Impact Award (n = 51). Results shed light on levels of burnout prevalence, antecedents on the level of the individual and the venture, and coping strategies of entrepreneurs and highlight the importance of a better understanding of social entrepreneurs’ well-being among researchers and practitioners.

Major life events (MLEs) in the educational domain such as graduating school or beginning a new degree set an important course for each individual’s life. However, the impact of such MLEs on patterns of individual-level language change across the lifespan, and how their impact may vary among individuals, is far from clear. In this article, we thus demonstrate the variation in patterns of individual-level perceived linguistic change affected by educational MLEs (i. e., graduating school, beginning a new degree, graduating university) among 181 Austrian participants with first language German. Our goal is to both quantitatively and qualitatively investigate which constellation of individual differences in event experiences and other psychosocial factors are associated with differences in reported individual-level linguistic change following educational MLEs. Bayesian modeling indicated that gender and proficiency in nonstandard varieties were particularly predictive of individual-level linguistic change. Qualitative analysis revealed a blended operation of socio-affective and language biography-related factors being associated with educational MLE-related change in the sociolinguistic repertoire.

Nurses are the largest occupational group in the healthcare sector in Germany and are exposed to a high level of physical and mental stress in their daily work. Workplace health promotion (WHP), preferably as part of a workplace health management system, can help to reduce stress. This article outlines the main challenges for the implementation of health promotion in hospitals. Between February and October 2022, 39 guideline-based expert interviews were conducted as part of the „Gute gesunde Arbeit in der Pflege“ projects. The interviews were analysed according to Mayring’s content-structuring qualitative content analysis. The challenges can be grouped into three areas: lack of prioritisation, lack of structures and resources, and additional effort in designing and organising WHP. Lack of prioritisation (e.g. due to cost pressure, limited concept of WHP) has a major influence on the structures and resources used to design and organise WHP. In general, unclear decision-making and responsibility structures (e.g. due to multiple staff responsibilities) complicate the implementation of WHP and cooperation with external stakeholders such as social insurance institutions. Due to the special conditions in hospitals (e.g. shift work, heterogeneity of the target groups, increased effort to activate the target group), the design and organisation require additional effort. The interaction of the different aspects is illustrated in a model. Nurses’ health needs to be given a higher priority at different levels. Sustainable management structures to reduce stress and promote health should be created by improving the provision of financial, human and time resources within the company and with support from external stakeholders.
