Non-users, lurkers, and posters in the online AP Teacher Community: Comparing characteristics determ...

This empirical study explored participation patterns of 1,733 Advanced Placement(AP) Physics teachers in the online AP teacher community (APTC) following the redesigned AP science examinations in the United States. We identified profiles of teachers with different levels of engagement in this peer-based online learning community. Our results provide insight into underrepresented user groups and ... [Show full abstract] the development of more personalized online teacher support systems. Our analysis suggested that teachers’ knowledge and experience, the enactment of AP practices, challenges with the AP redesign, and AP workload were all significantly associated with changes in the probability of teachers becoming APTC users. This indicated that the APTC attracted a non-representative population sample of all AP physics teachers. However, most teacher, teaching, and school characteristics provided no indication as to whether APTC users were posters or lurkers.

A demographic database for monitoring community life support skills

Training in community life support has been shown to lessen the mortality from sudden myocardial events 1. Such community training is badly quantified and its efficacy difficult to prove. [Show full abstract] disadvantage. An Access database 2 was created that has captured demographic data about those trained. This simple technique, with data-capture from a wide range of lay trainers, is demonstrating at its crudest exactly how many have been trained. It can show population rates of training and compare these with the international target of 20% of the population. It highlights the age bands of those trained and whether the socially disadvantaged are having equitable training. UK Post-code (Zip-code) has in parallel with other Scottish work 3 been used as a proxy for social circumstances. The greatest value of the database is that it is ready to be married up with national data from the Scottish Ambulance Service and allied studies 4 to show over time how effective the training is in altering mortality. The effort in creating and maintaining such an epidemiological database requires faith. It is the "posterity planting" of modern public health medicine.

Mission to Mars: A one-week introductory project for new physics students

A new event to help smooth the induction of year 1 students to university was run in the Physics Department on a trial basis in the academic year 2009/10 and extended in 2010/11.The event took place in the first week of term with the aim of introducing the students to the Department and the level of engagement expected of them. [Show full abstract] physics problem on a topical issue was presented to the students who were organised to work in groups.In addition to working on the project problem, the students completed some on-line assignments (in order to introduce them to Pearson‟s Mastering Physics software which the Department has adopted after a successful pilot). In the first year the event ran for 2.5 days, with the groups producing a 1-page report (requiring them to encounter the printing system) and a poster for a poster session. In 2010/11 teams (each containing 5 groups) presented their results to an audience of academics (and fellow students), emphasising the importance of communication skills. The evaluation results indicate that it was a beneficial experience, and the effect of the changes in the second year has been investigated.
