Ubiquitous professional learning through informal online communities of practice: a study
of second/foreign-language teachers
Roland van Oostveen
Research to date on teacher involvement in informal online communities of practice for
professional learning is limited and for second/foreign language teachers there is less still. This is
due to the relative novelty of informal virtual communities as a professional learning alternative,
their diversity, and in the second/foreign language field – their modest number.
This session discusses graduate research about teacher attitudes, feelings and experiences related
to participation in informal online Communities of Practice (CoP) as an alternative means of
professional learning. The findings from sample populations in Canada and Ukraine identify
opportunities for and challenges to professional learning within virtual communities, and
understandings about their professional role and pedagogical potential.
