Enterprise Lecture Capture technologies have increasingly become pervasive in higher education. This article presents student views on the value of recorded lectures and their contribution to learning. The research examines how students engage with recorded lecture materials and the likely of this engaging impacting on lecture attendance. The results suggest that students found access to recorded lectures valuable to learning. They reported that recorded lectures offer alternative learning opportunities for missed lectures and are useful in revising for exams. Analysis of the data further revealed that provision of recorded lectures to students does not directly contribute to class absenteeism. The present study adds to growing research evidence in support of the value of recorded lectures in enhancing student engagement with learning materials.

Lecture recordings are widely used within higher education as a means of engaging and enriching students learning, by providing more adaptable, highly flexible and convenient access to learning materials. However, educators have increasingly raised concerns that lecture recording availability contributes to a decline in students attending lectures. This study explores how students engage with lecture recordings and the extent to which they perceive access to these resources contributes to their learning. We administered self-reported measures (questionnaire) to undergraduate and postgraduate students (n=664) who had access to lecture recordings. The quantitative data were summarised using descriptive statistics. We then applied a sentiment analysis technique to triangulate and contest the results derived from the quantitative analysis. Overall, the results in this study indicate that lecture recordings can provide students with flexibility and convenient access to learning materials, and ultimately enhancing their learning experience. Most respondents regarded lecture recording as supplementary learning resources not a replacement for lectures; stating that the availability of lecture recordings did not influence their decisions to attend lectures. Respondents reported that they used lecture recordings to prepare for exams, revise and compare their notes taken in class.

Lecture recordings are useful learning resources that can support flexible, remote and distance learning, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study explored students’ experiences of engaging with recorded lectures and the extent to which such engagement contributes to enhanced learning. The research involved the deployment of a questionnaire to undergraduate and postgraduate students (n = 660) who had access to lecture recordings at a research intensive public university in New Zealand. Key findings revealed that students who accessed lecture recordings reported an enhanced learning experience. They stated that the availability of lecture recordings created an inclusive learning environment for students with learning disabilities and fostered flexible learning for those who would otherwise be unable to attend lectures either due to sickness or work commitments. Data also suggest that students utilised lecture recordings as supplementary learning resources rather than a substitute for regular lecture attendance. Our findings substantiated previous research studies and additionally demonstrated the various ways in which students engage with lecture recordings. Moreover, the use of sentiment analysis shows how multiple data can be triangulated to confirm or contest research findings. Finally, we believe this study adds to the voice that lecture recordings are vital resources that support students’ learning.

This article presents the results of a study aimed at understanding the value of lecture recordings to student learning. We analysed transcripts of discussions on social media (Facebook) that students generated on the value of lecture recordings. Students discussed whether recording lectures and making them available should be compulsory. While the efficacy of lecture recording has been studied using conventional methods (e.g. questionnaires and interviews) on highly structured data, we employed social network and sentiment analysis techniques to examine individual messages posted on the Student Union’s Facebook page. We chose to employ social network and sentiment analysis because these methods are useful in examining semi-structured and unstructured social media data. Overall findings suggest students generally view lecture recordings as resources for supplementing live lectures rather than replacing them. Students stated that lecture recordings could facilitate the creation of an inclusive learning environment and inculcate a positive learning experience. Work presented in this article adds to the growing debate on the institutional deployment of lecture recordings and their impact on students’ engagement and learning. It also demonstrated how educational researchers could utilise social network and sentiment analysis to examine critical issues in education.

This chapter introduces the concept of learning space in the twenty-first century and considers the various contexts in which learning occurs. The increasing growth of digital educational networking technologies has contributed to the need to create and support various forms of learning spaces. These technologies have also transformed the way students engage and interact off- and online. Contemporary learning, as we know, is no longer limited to physical learning spaces. Instead, students engage in various learning spaces. Others extensively leverage opportunities afforded by social network platforms as tools for collaborative and self-directed learning. Students use social networking technologies to engage with content, connect with peers within their social networks and communicate with their teachers. With the increasing prevalence of these technologies, researchers and educators are provided with new opportunities to extend learning from physical spaces to virtual spaces and optimise pedagogical strategies that can support adaptive learning. Our goal in this chapter is to explore the extent to which understanding of learning spaces and contexts contribute to designing better student engagement and possibly better learning outcomes.

While blended learning has been around for sometime, the interplay between lecture recordings, lecture attendance and grades needs further examination particularly for large cohorts of over 1000 students in 500 seat lecture theatres. This paper reports on such an investigation with a cohort of 1450 first year psychology students’ who indicated whether they frequently attended lectures or not. The division helped ascertain differences and similarities in preferences for utilising online recordings. Overall, non-frequent attendees were more likely not to use lecture recordings (48.1%) to make up a missed lecture than frequent attendees (34.3%). Surprisingly, in the last week of semester, 29% of students reported not yet accessing lecture recordings. Students had the intention to use lecture recordings as they envisaged these to be helpful for learning and commented that they would be adversely affected if recordings were not available. In fact, students are passionate about lecture recordings. Analytics show that after lecture 7, each lecture recording attracted 600 or less unique visits (hits) supporting the finding that most students make strategic use of learning resources available within the blended learning environment.

Today, the information gathered from massive learning platforms and social media sites allow deriving a very comprehensive set of learning information. To this aim, data mining techniques can surely help to gain proper insights, personalize learning experiences, formative assessments, performance measurements, as well as to develop new learning and instructional design models. Therefore, a core requirement is to classify, mix, filter and process the involved big data sources by means of proper learning and social learning analytics tools. In this perspective, the paper investigates the most promising applications and issues of big data for the design of the next-generation of massive learning platforms and social media sites. Specifically, it addresses the methodological tools and instruments for social learning analytics, pitfalls arising from the usage of open datasets, and privacy and security aspects. The paper also provides future research directions.

This paper explores the use of lecture capture in Engineering classes to provide students with the opportunity to enhance their understanding of the course content. Students were asked to provide feedback on what they perceive the benefits and the drawbacks of lecture capture to be. The results show that the students consider lecture capture an effective tool to help them succeed in the course. The videos are available to them 24 hours a day, seven days a week thus allowing students to bridge the gap between what they have understood in the formal class setting and what they are able to better understand after reviewing the videos in a more informal, relaxed environment. In addition, most of the students indicated that the availability of the videos did not encourage them to skip or miss any classes. The main drawback was associated with technical difficulties which resulted in some wasted time. © International Forum of Educational Technology & Society (IFETS).

Web-based lecture technologies are being used increasingly in higher education. One widely-used method is the recording of lectures delivered during face-to-face teaching of on-campus courses. The recordings are subsequently made available to students on-line and have been variously referred to as lecture capture, video podcasts, and Lectopia. We examined the literature on lecture recordings for on-campus courses from the perspective of students, lecturers, and the institution. Literature was drawn from major international electronic databases of Elsevier ScienceDirect, PsycInfo, SAGE Journals, SpringerLink, ERIC and Google Scholar. Searches were conducted using key terms of lecture capture, podcasts, vodcasts, video podcasts, video streaming, screencast, webcasts, and online video. The reference sections of each article were also searched and a citation search was conducted. Institutions receive pressure from a range of sources to implement web-based technologies, including from students and financial imperatives, but the selection of appropriate technologies must reflect the vision the institution holds. Students are positive about the availability of lecture recordings. They make significant use of the recordings, and the recordings have some demonstrated benefits to student learning outcomes. Lecturers recognise the benefits of lecture recordings for students and themselves, but also perceive several potential disadvantages, such as its negative effect on attendance and engagement, and restricting the style and structure of lectures. It is concluded that the positives of lecture recordings outweigh the negatives and its continued use in higher education is recommended. However, further research is needed to evaluate lecture recordings in different contexts and to develop approaches that enhance its effectiveness.

The teacher education field has recently undergone dramatic changes leading to a shift of focus from transmission models towards alternative approaches and theories that emerged in the post-transmission era addressing sociocultural, political, ideological, and critical issues. Despite worldwide changes in teacher education programs, it seems that alternative theories and ideas have had little or no impact on teacher education for English language teaching (ELT) in Iran. This study investigated the applicability of the post-transmission perspectives and theories to the Iranian teacher education context, in addition to the concerns and challenges faced by teachers and instructors working in that context. To this end, the views and beliefs of ten experienced English teachers and three educators were collected using three methods of data collection: collaborative dialogue; currere or reflexive narrative; and, interviews. The data were analysed to identify emerging themes relating to the current status of teacher education in Iran, including impediments, constraints, and concerns in case of any change. The study found that participants believed that policy makers, educators, and teachers needed to adopt alternative theories and approaches in order to improve pre-service and in-service ELT teacher education in Iran. However, given the local context, they indicated that any action taken towards transformation required meticulous consideration on the part of the key stakeholders.

The move to increasingly flexible platforms for student learning and experience through provision of online lecture recordings is often interpreted by educators as students viewing attendance at lectures as optional. The trend toward the use of this technology is often met with resistance from some academic staff who argue that student attendance will decline. This study aimed to explore students' use of online lectures and to measure the impact of them on student attendance at lectures. A pre and post evaluation methodology was undertaken using a self administered questionnaire that gathered both quantitative and qualitative data. Overall attendance was recorded at each lecture throughout the semester. Results indicated that attendance remained high throughout the semester and while only a minority of students used the recordings, those who did found them to be helpful. Most students used them to either supplement their learning or to make up for a lecture that they had not been able to attend. This study provides evidence that contrary to popular belief, Generation Y students in general, do not aspire to replace lectures with downloadable, online versions. Many of the students in this study valued the opportunity for interactive learning provided by face to face teaching. Finally, a model that outlines the attributes that contribute to quality teaching is used to describe how this technology can contribute to positive student experiences and can enhance reflective teaching practice.

Background: Prior research on the instructional use of screencasts (video of a computer screen output with realtime audio commentary) suggests that this technology is perceived by students as beneficial and results in improved course performance. Purpose: This study explores how and why students use screencasts, as well as why some students choose not to use them. The study also investigates whether the perception that screencasts are helpful aligns with the reality of students' course performance. Design/Method: A quantitative study was conducted throughout two semesters in an undergraduate engineering survey course at a large public university. The investigation used a student perceptions survey and case study analysis to explore the connection between screencast use, the perception of having gained a deeper understanding of the course material based on this use, and actual course performance. Results: Findings indicate that students' preferred strategies for using screencasts are related to the frequency of use and the degree of understanding. Students who use the screencasts more and perceive them to have increased their understanding demonstrate increased competence on particular exam questions. Only those students who actively chose not to use screencasts (compared to those who forgot or ran out of time) show no detrimental effects on their performance. Conclusion: Our findings highlight both the perceived and actual value of screencasting to students and the ways this technology is used. This research suggests that screencasting may promote self-efficacy among undergraduate engineering students.
