Analysis of influencing factors on height differences between ASTER GDEM and SRTM 3

Abstract

ASTER GDEM,as the newly released global DEM data,has higher resolution and wider coverage than generally used SRTM3. For promoting the application of ASTER GDEM and SRTM3,this study compared ASTER GDEM with SRTM3 in central China,and analyzed the factors influencing the height differences between ASTER GDEM and SRTM3. The results showed that ASTER GDEM has lower elevations ( approximately 5. 42m) compared with SRTM3,and the RMS value of height differences between ASTER GDEM and SRTM3 was 16. 90 m. Height differences between ASTER GDEM and SRTM3 increased with the increment of slope,terrain relief,percent of vegetation coverage,and height differences decreased with the increment of Stack Number which means the number of scene-based DEMs contributing to the final GDEM value. Moreover,height differences between the two DEMs were also influenced by aspect and land use.
