Today there is a greater interest in spreading the knowledge of the values of cultural heritage and the transmission of these values to a wide audience. Effective artificial lighting projects in architectural landmarks of the city of Palermo should be aimed at enhancing the cultural heritage while respecting the identity of the places, mainly thanks to technological innovations that have expanded a lot of expressive possibilities. Through the light is possible the vision of a historic building, or an ancient context, conveying the same sense of past events that have seen the construction and the events of which he was a witness.

Restoring or renovating important historical sites and buildings, for either the original or a new purpose, ensures the continuation of cultural heritage. This article discusses the renovated cistern in İzmir’s Kadifekale that is to be used as an exhibition hall. Various parameters were considered for the lighting design of cistern, such as visual comfort, functional requirements and aesthetics. This article discusses the approach and methods of the lighting design for the historic cistern in detail.
