The JULIE LAB MANTRA system for the CLEF-ER 2013 challenge

We here describe the set-up for the system from the Jena University Language & Information Engineering (JULIE) Lab which participated in the CLEF-ER 2013 Challenge. The task of this challenge was to identify hitherto unknown translation equivalents for biomedical terms from several parallel text corpora. The languages being covered are English, German, French, Spanish and Dutch. Our translation ... Based on expert assessment of the new German translations about 76% of these were judged as plausible term enhancements.

A Speech-to-Speech Translation System for Catalan, Spanish, and English

This paper describes the evaluation of the FAME interlingua-based speech-to-speech translation system for Catalan, English and Spanish. This system is an extension of the already existing NESPOLE! that translates between English, French, German and Italian. This article begins with a brief introduction followed by a description of the system architecture and the components of the translation ... [Show full abstract] module including the Speech Recognizer, the analysis chain, the generation chain and the Speech Synthesizer. Then we explain the interlingua formalism used, called Interchange Format (IF). We show the results obtained from the evaluation of the system and we describe the three types of evaluation done. We also compare the results of our system with those obtained by a stochastic translator which has been independently developed over the course of the FAME project. Finally, we conclude with future work.

In the English and French languages, the word fatigue is used to express feelings of extreme, unusual tiredness. In contrast, Itahan-speaking individuals use the word “stanchezza” (tiredness) and the German-speaking population also simply uses the word “Müdigkeif” (tiredness). The Latin word “fatigatid” is translated into German as “general exhaustion” (allgemeine Erschöpfung; Duden 1985). The ... [Show full abstract] ancient Greeks seem to have felt “asthenias” (strengthless) rather than tired (kamov/kekmäkos). In many countries, lay populations would not understand the term fatigue, because there is not even a word for it in their language. In these countries, the term fatigue seems to be replaced by words corresponding to “extreme tiredness” and “general exhaustion.”

Ruling lines removal in handwritten documents

In this paper, we present a method for removing ruling lines from handwritten documents, making no damage to the existing characters. It is argued that ruling lines have a predictable position in the page, but their thickness and the distance between them may differ from one document to another, which is estimated with simple algorithm. Compare to other methods, our method, which has been tested on six languages, that is English, French, German, Greek, Arabic and Persian, displays reduced time in the computation of rule-line removal and higher performance.
